Dang it. After several matches where I wasn't rocked (if you'll excuse the expression) by the choices, now I need to choose between two really excellent options here. After a couple listens, I'll vote Walk Dont Run, but it hurts to vote against 25 or 6 to 4
Right after my love for rockabilly, probably comes surf music and surf guitar. I even made a mix tape of all surf songs for some girl and called it Stray Bikini Tops Walk Don't Run is a favorite song and I love the guitar work on it, but I won't be voting for it here.
I actually prefer the Terry Kath guitar work over WDR for this matchup. If it was song Vs song, my vote goes the other way, but that's some fine playing by Kath and my vote goes there.
Walk don't run is a classic beach tune, covered by every garage band on the planet in the 60s. But the guitar on 25 or 6 to 4 is far surperior. It underpins all of the song except the first little bit, and there is a very long and fabulous guitar solo in the second half that then blends back into the collective musicianship and continues to carry the song to the end. I understand nostalgia, but I'm voting for the better guitar performance.
My vote is for 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. I saw them live in 1971 or 72 at UNC Greensoro, and walked out a fan. Although in my opinion they went too top 40 after a couple of records, those first couple were killer, and the guitar was a big part of why I think that.
Couldn't have said it better myself (although I had to wait to see them live until the early 90's).
Going with the underrated Terry Kath.
