I'll get in a last minute vote for Jimi. Saw Paul McCartney last night and he shared an anecdote about Hendrix. He said that Jimi paid him one of the most flattering tributes he's ever received as a songwriter. Now McCartney and Hendrix were relatively tight during Hendrix's sojourn in the UK, and Jimi was over there when Sgt. Pepper was released. McCartney said that Sgt. Pepper dropped on a Friday and that Sunday, Jimi opened his show with a cover of the title track. Jimi later integrated the cover into his live act (there are a number of versions of it on YouTube), and it certainly has a Hendrix twist that McCartney must have appreciated. The most mind-blowing thing for me in that story is that both guys were 25 years old at the time. Two guys, both of them already *giants* in their field, and they were that young.
