I agree on FRASIER -- that was one of those cases where I was happy to have my initial reaction to the announcement silenced.
As I never got into FRIENDS - not as if I had any specific problems with it, I just never gave it any attention - so even if I had seen JOEY I'd have lacked the frame of reference.
While we're on sitcoms and NBC, I'm simultaneously peeved and and mystified by their lack of regard for one of the best shows they've gotten on the air in a long time: COMMUNITY. Promotion for the show has essentially been non-existent. I know their are company politics involved, as it's something Sony owns, unlike the rest of NBC's Thursday sitcoms, but.... ::sigh::
Last night's sublime send-up of Glee - the last new episode of COMMUNITY we'll see for months -- was excellent!
Trust me, you wouldn't have needed a frame of reference to know it was terrible.
I think they're still finding their way through these decisions.
I definitely think they are still trying to figure out what they want their image to be as a product. I also feel like we are the guinea pigs for their experiment.
SPECIAL DISCLAIMER: I haven't seen guinea pigs used in labs. Usually its mice, rabbits, and rats. Ground-up rat snouts smell awful.
One of my favorite Spin Offs in my lifetime is Frasier. They took a peripheral character and really let him shine in his own element.
One of the worst? Joey. They took a funny likable guy and... I don't really know. I only watched two episodes, because it was just that bad.
Wow, that is one that will be hard to match. "Frasier" really was a quality show.
And then there's..."Joey.":cross-eye
Meanwhile, "Happy Days" went two-for-three in spin-offs: it begat two hits ("Laverne and Shirley" and "Mork and Mindy") and a miss ("Joanie Loves Chachi").
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!
Before we go one more post...given the opening theme of this thread, I feel compelled to mention MY FAVORITE SPIN-OFF.
Yes, "All in the Family" begat "The Jeffersons."
But I will always be grateful to "All in the Family" for having been the show that led to the spin-off that introduced me to She Who SHOULD Have Played Wonder Woman (Adrienne Barbeau) and She Who Is Woman To Us All (Beauteous Bea Arthur)...in "Maude."
Ahhhhhhhhhhh.

This reminds me of a friend I have who has a similar fixation on Kate (Captain Janeway) Mulgrew, who he on more than one occasion referred to as a "Goddess Mother" or some such. In the end, it's good to know that we're not all looking for the same lids to our respective jars.
