I liked the comic. It was almost a team-up book with all the guest starts he had. There was the X-Men, Shang Chi, Namor, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
Rom was my gateway into comics and action figures. Despite the limitations of the toy it was genuinely fun and the book was my first exposure to the Marvel universe. So of course I would love to have him in Heroclix. Taken as a whole I rather like the analysis in the article, though it would seem a shame to leave out his tenure as a herald of Galactus.
Trait - Rom ignores Shape Change and Battle Fury and may copy the Power Cosmic TA.
I was actually quite surprised not to see Ikon in Galactic Guardians with the rest of the Annihilators. Given how often this topic comes up it makes me wonder if WK is keeping its distance from anything related from this property without the rights to the titular character. Such a shame if that means we never get Ikon, Hybrid, the Dire Wraiths, the Deathwing, the Rocketmen or any version of Hammerhand, Firefall, Liberator, Terminator, Starshine or Javelin.
I was given rep for my screen name alone! Now I feel all warm inside

It's amazing how this keeps coming up every six months or so. More amazing is how some who claim to have read Rom don't know he was a toy released one year that failed horribly. He was the only character, he wasn't very posable, he was too large to use with the 4" action figures of the time, and he required lots of battery replacements.
I liked the comic as well, but the only way you'll ever see him is if one of you does a Kickstarter to buy the rights for Wizkids to make him from the toy company that made him. It's out of Marvel's hands.
Marvel still has the rights to Rom. They have used him as recently as twelve years ago in the OverPower CCG that Fleer was doing. Pretty sure that has the same licensing categories as toys. Plus it's still hasn't lapsed long enough to lose the rights.
WizKids GamePlay, "You can only play our game if you buy the new stuff. Those old figures are dirty and obsolete."
Record vs VGA d1sc1pL3: W-3 L-0
He is cool to remember, but the comic wasn't that good.
I vaguely remember the toy. It was somewhat cool at the time, but not all that desirable because there were similar toys on the market.
The comic was the best thing to happen to the ROM toy, and Sal Buscema was the best thing to happen to the comic. And it was still lackluster if memory serves me.

I don't think it's too weird for someone to be familiar with the character but not with the toy. The toy failed and vanished pretty quickly, and was widely regarded as being pretty junky and un-fun... whereas the comic was pretty great (IMHO), had a lot of big crossovers, and is still having ramifications on the Marvel U. Heck, basically the entire first volume of "Annihilators" was based on ROM lore, and that book was popular enough to warrant a Fast Forces pack.
As far as I know, ROM is on the same weird Marvel Licensing shelf as the Micronauts or the Transformers: It's easy for Marvel to use characters that they created specifically for the comics (like Bug from Micronauts, or Death's Head from Transformers), but it gets tricky and expensive to use characters like Baron Karza or Megatron, who were already established parts of the toy line.
That all being said, Ikon is the new Spaceknight Hotness, and I'm not really sure why we haven't gotten a figure of her yet.
Oh man, we got a Negative Man and a Jimmy Olsen? Now I need to think of a new signature after all these years!
I had to go Wiki the character. I remember thinking he was pretty cool when I ran across him in one of the old Marvel Universe Handbooks from the 80s, but didn't know anything about the history of the character. Funny that the comic totally eclipsed the toy it was licensed from.
What abilities did the Dire Wraiths have besides shape-change? Was there anything else defining about them?
The Dire Wraiths were an evolutionary branching of the Skrulls that had taken a turn in a really unpleasant direction. Basically, instead of changing shape at will as the Skrulls do they sucked the brains directly out of their victims' skulls with a proboscis-like tongue and then assumed their bodies, abilities (and weaknesses as a Dire Wraith in human form could be killed as easily as any human) and memories. They also possessed far greater than standard human strength (strong enough to tussle physically with Rogue and not be completely obliterated) and were very adapt in the use of dark magic of various kinds. In short, they were rather unpleasant creatures, and also ugly as sin in their natural forms

Analyzer : Rom ignores Shape Change and Super Senses. Neutralizer settings: Before ROM makes a ranged combat attack, but not when using Ranged Combat Expert, you can choose one of the following options for the attack: 1) ROM's damage value is reduced by one and this attack deals penetrating damage.; 2) ROM's damage value is 0; if the attack succeeds, put the target in that character's starting area, and put a debris token in the square it previously occupied. 3) The hit character's powers are countered until the start of your next turn. Self Repair Systems: ROM can use regeneration, if he has two action tokens at the start of a turn he may use regeneration as a free action.
I gave him indom, b/c almost every robot Marvel clic has indom.
He seems a bit powerful for 190 points. That could just be me though.
Ditto on that one. Unfortunately if they were to ever actually make ROM (AND I REALLY HOPE THEY DO) they would probably sculpt re-use to make Ikon an LE or take up another spot in the set. (And they don't look alike at all)

I love Rom! Thanks for doing the Unclixed.
From what I understand, they still have the license for "Spaceknights" as the generic term (they used them in Annihilation: Conquest), and are technically allowed to use the character Rom from the comics, but can't show him in armor and can't refer to him by name. The only time I've seen that was in Universe X, when he fights Dire Wraiths with Cap and Mar-Vell, both of them refer to Rom as "The Greatest of the Space Knights!" (Universe X #3) He's depicted with the Wraith-banishing gun, a claw-arm, and armor on his back (along with a giant hermit beard). Maybe that could be a potential loop-hole clix name/sculpt?
So much for my powers of observation if I can spot the trait dropping off but not the missing power. It was essentially what the article suggested, a Supernova/Superman Beyond like banishment power.
Here's a much more unusual dial that captures the inspirational effect he had on his people, the sudden shifts in strategy from issue to issue in the comic, his return to humanity and his willingness to don the armor once again if the need should arise.

Spaceknight: Rom of Galador ignores Shape Change and Battle Fury. The First Volunteer Of Many: When a friendly figure of lower point value than Rom of Galador that was a part of your force during force construction is KO'ed, you may roll 1d6 that cannot be rerolled. If you do, on a roll of 5-6, place a figure with a point value of 75 or less and the robot or armor keyword from outside the game into your deployment zone. . The Greatest Spaceknight: Rom can use Invulnerability, Willlpower and Energy Shield/Deflection

What abilities did the Dire Wraiths have besides shape-change? Was there anything else defining about them?
The Dire Wraiths started out in the comics as a technologically advanced shape-shifting race, but later it was revealed there were TWO races of wraiths, the yellowish science-oriented ones (who were usually male) and the reddish beaked magic-users (who were usually female). The true form of the magic-users had a long drill-like tongue that would puncture the skull of a victim, killing him and allowing the wraith to steal the victim's memories and form (the techies would just shapeshift into a chosen form without having to kill a victim).
The Dire Wraiths were an evolutionary offshoot of the Skrulls, who were not happy about it. The Skrulls came to Earth in ROM #50 to help eliminate the Wraith infestation in Clairton, West Virginia.
