Unfortunate for x-wing players. Cost is what kept me out of the game at first. I only got into it because I was able to start up a collection rather inexpensively.
To be honest, cost also kept me out in the beginning.
I was already having fun (and spending lots of money) on clix and i did not started x-wing because the cost of one figure seemed very high
But wizkids managed to make me stop buying clix, and then i had a friend who was really enjoying x-wing and i said "why not redirect money to a better game and company"
and voilą
Now that i play x-wing, i can buy everything that is released for a fraction of what buying every x-men and related clix evermade costed me. I get a more balanced game, that has a release schedule more in line with my expectations and i'm very happy.

Even buying both X-wing and Golem Arcana, I'll still be spending way less than I did on clix.

I think part of it was entry cost. I resisted getting in to Attack Wing for that reason. I did spend way more on clix, but $40 + another $30 for two ship packs so you can have a full force of one faction seemed like a lot, especially on a game that has less of a following and might fizzle out within a few months (X-wing is/was stronger, but still not as easy to get a tournament going). With Heroclix, you can get everything you need to play and a theme team at several hundred point lines for about $20. Then with Attack Wing, you find yourself wanting to buy a $15 booster just to get one or two cards for some cool combo. For $15 you could get a 5 figure and gravity feed booster or a fast forces, and at least you get a bunch of extra figures. That's how it feels anyway, though honestly you end up using most of the things in that FF or Gravity feed about as often as you used the Romulan Science Vessel. Anyway, the point is that even if you can easily spend more on Heroclix over a short period of time, sometimes the entry cost to get in to Attack Wing or X-Wing seems more daunting at first for a game you may or may not play more easily. That's how it was for me anyway.

I can see that being an obstacle for some people. I've always felt the starters should have at least one more ship in them and just make it a flat $50.
Even though GA is an $80 MSRP starter, its a two player game out of the box. There are 6 figs, 3 per side. Enough to play 500 point games without needing to buy more right away.

Being fairly new to X-Wing, a few weeks now, my friend and I each have most of the available small/large ships with doubles of the small. Some, well, a few more than double. Then we'll just need, yes... need, the Tantive and the Raider.
Even with that I think we'll each have spent a little more than what we would have spent on Trinity War. While we have less plastic in comparison to clix we have a game we enjoy more. And we're set until new waves come out.
Clix just burned us out. So many overly complicated combinations and the rules just became a complete clusterfudge. So I don't regret the money spent on X-Wing. And our group of friends quickly escalated the purchase competition. We probably could have slowed our purchases down and we would have still been happy.
Net result, even with owning all I've spent on Mage Wars, X-Wing, Imperial Assault, and other games I'm still less than or equal to what I'd spend on clix in a year. And that's going to go lower over time.
