Nightcrawler has been my favorite mutant since I started reading my father's old X-men comics while growing up (by old I mean I was reading Giant-Sized X-men #1 in the early '80s; I'm so glad my father was a comic book geek too!).
Heroclix has had a hate/cheese relationship with Nightcrawler far too much. The CT Unique was ugly early on in Marvel, being the only HSS character. The Fantastic Forces version reined that in but left him mostly ignored for lack of utility. Then this one with its abusive nature. Then the WatX version which was packed in a team base and hard to acquire, plus an LE that wasn't even on the X-men. DoFP and UXM were much nicer to him. I think DoFP is my favorite representation, although both UXM versions are good lower cost options.
Agreed.
I have really had fun using the UXM Common:
He feels very comic accurate.
He can teleport anywhere on the map, as long as he can see it.
He is a tough acrobat to hit with a strong defense.
He can 'port in and out and attack - and it is balanced by a limited range. It would be great if it was his movement value or at least 6 range, but a 4 is okay.
P-Strike allows him to hurt any opposing figure which takes into account his nastier power uses.
As he exerts himself, he tires.
Sure, everyone can point to that issue where he was his broken, fan-boy, crazy, poorly written version (history, boo!), but this version is a Nightcrawler that happened in the 80's as well as most of his animated appearances.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
-Nightcrawler is obviously great at the snatch-n-grab and can pull enemies in closer for others to slap around.
-Phoenix is pretty overly-costed by standards now but she's still got pretty good range and a heavy range and her Outwit can be a mess to deal with now that traited powers can be subject to Outwit.
-Meggan's powers completely bank on that Shape Change, which if it's not in the dice then her points won't matter. Sadly there's not a lot of options (other than her REV from Sinister, though the Experienced one is pretty sweet). If someone does get through her Shape Change, at least they will most likely take some Mystics.
-Captain Britain is the powerhouse of this team. His points are still pretty good for what he brings to the table. Having Nightcrawler grab guys and bring them back to Captain Britain to to bash is pretty sweet, especially since he gets +1 to his stats when closer to his own starting area. And with Nightcrawler parks next to him with the punching bag, next turn a successful Leadership roll and pull a token from Nightcrawler and give him Willpower. That could cause a dangerous cycle with the teleporting wonder and his strongman.
-Shadowcat is a neat little taxi where transporter isn't a thing anymore. It gives her generic HSS at least. This team doesn't need a whole lot of carrying honestly so she might as well get something from it. She could just pop in and out trying to dig some people down. She'd great for tie-up too between front dial Super Senses and late dial Shape Change.
Thanks for writing up this thoughtful and insightful article. I have been dutifully collecting Heroclix, and always love to see new versions of the fuzzy elf!

thanks everyone who enjoyed the article. I love how this many years later the community is still pretty much love or hate on this figure.

I think the fact that his stats have effectively been degraded by the game moving around him makes him more of a fun option today. Might have to break him out again sometime.
And this is pretty much where I landed on Kurt now. When I first discovered him I had to have him. After a few times it just felt too dirty to me for casual and he was already out of modern by then. Now I feel that his cost isn’t AS bad considering what point cost on everything is today. He can still be the king of nuisances but I feel like he’s a bit more manageable.

As annoying and 'game broken' as NC is - it's tough to go past the fact that it's a pretty accurate representation of how Nightcrawler can fight.
The simplest 'fix' IMO to maybe bring it back out of the meta might be a 'once per game' limit on 'bamfing' opposing characters
... but *meh* - there are plenty of other clix out there which are OP, game breaking AND not really in character to how that character can/does battle.
Nice work!
Thanks for all the compliments!
I couldn’t agree with the bolded part more. That was the main reason I NEEDED this piece.

You think DOFP is the best? Hmmm... I’ll hafta put him to the test. Honestly I’ve never played with him, only against him, but he’s in the collection. I should rectify that situation.

Nice. That could’ve been a fun build, but I did want to get some of the newer figures in. I don’t own a Meggan or Captain Britain (not that I probably couldn’t have borrowed one) but I do still have WatX Phoenix. I had considered her but she’s kinduva a lot of points and I haven’t had great experiences with her.

You’re right, but I think he was more referring to it being a thing that WK won’t be doing anymore.
