I've also decided to take the pile trial and low and behold....I have a tie??? I have a 42 card deck, 21-21. My deck is a field-control deck so I could understand the use of some staples but it does make you think. I never really do like resorting to these but after some though, maybe I can make the field-control less staple heavy. Looks like I'm gonna be up all night plotting the deck out again. Oh well, sometimes a good challenge is to do something original.
When FET hits, I wonder how widely used Gatling Dragon(I think that's what it's called) will be used.
Not widely used at all.The only difference I see it making is another morphable level for metamorphasis decks. Now BLS will serve an actual purpose there besides the fact that everyone else uses him.Another weapon to meta decks, cool.

I couldn't agree with this more.Which I why I think that some peoples view on the ban list is scary.Like the people who say "lets ban everything 90% of all decks use,to force the creativity".My gosh people, its just a game. You can't force people to do anything. If you keep banning all the cards there just going to quit.
Anyways,a great article.I think its pretty cool, but the one major flaw keeps appearing in this thread. And that is that there are no "staples" as you call them. Some people had the nerve to include Swords Of Revealing Light and Change Of Heart in their idea of staples...Now thats scary. You people seem to be forgeting that there arent any staples.Only good cards or abused cards.Another thing is that a couple of you said you had no more use for staples, except a distinguished few, which included Jinzo,Magic Cylinders,Exiled Force,Heavy Storm, etc.Out of all those cards Heavy Storm is the closest to being a staple and only because of the current meta. Those cards arent really abused cards,so I dont see why you would call them staples. Most of those cards arent even played by a lot of duelists, you all should really rethink your views on staples.Do you even see regional decks maindecking Magic Cylinder,or Exiled Force? Not really, they are decent, but not staples as you call them.I think the ban list did enough of a job creating more diversity amoung decks, you people just have to high of standards for it.
If you put it that way, its obvious that the people who are more fortunate is gonna have less cards in the first pile. I remember a like 3 months back, I played Ottd My bod as a shield trap hole etc. Now I play what people play and its OBVIOUSLY better. Course I do play other stuff that not much plays now like Mirage of Nightmare, Zero Gravity etc, but still...
Also, will new bans comes new decks, will new decks comes more cookie cutters and theregore NEW staples. You will never have everyone using different cards, its just the way it is.
For everyone with a bigger 1st pile, are you sure your not beind modest and just looking at some cards you like alot and saying "thats not a staple, i dont play it because its good, i play it because i like it" .
I can assure you I am not not like that at all.
You want proof?
Dig into my threads and find my Warrior deck.
I use a number of cards most people wouldn't even bother with.
when you put it that way, I'd like to have some cards that are never seen in tournament plays, and I'd like to be original so that way I can gripe at those people who uses freakin' BLS-EOTB and cookie-cutter chaos.
im about 60/40 one the first pile to the second...but i always make sure i use fun cards like graceful dice...you wouldnt beleive how many duels that little card has one me also sebeks blessing and many odd cards like that give my opponets fits
*mas applause rains from the cheap seats*
Ain't that what i've been preaching from the beginning? There are staples, yes, but the truly good players are the ones that are able to build good (or decent) decks that don't have staples in them, though I personally will never go anywhere without at least Bottomless Trap Hole, Raigeki, and Torrential Tribute (Anyone else think I like monster destruction? Eh? I LOVE removing BLS from the game. Stupid kiddies) but you're right. I'll admit that my piles are 'right' according to this article, but that 'must have to win' pile is still too big.
I also think that UDE is moving in this direction, and that all the 'good' players are afraid to enter the Advanced Format because they're afraid to play without their Raigekis and such. Its sad, but true.
I did the test with 4 of my main decks- My Marauder Deck, my Shift to Darkness Deck, my Chaos deck and my Revenge of the Dark Paladin Deck.
The result.
The maruader deck had only 10 cards I would call original. though, i think it's a bit unfair. I was playing warrior back before it was cool to, and alot of the cards I use now were once scorned. However, I won't worry about it.
The Shift deck did better, with 13. The main problem was the Vampires (Lord and Patirican) However, cards like Reflect Bounder and Mystical Plasma Zone brought the creative boast.
And chaos? Brace yoruself....it was tied. haf staple, half uniquie. The reason is that my chaos deck was built around burning. So, I ahve lots of Des Koalas and Secret Barrels in it, along with unlikely light monsters.
Revenge I was the hardest on, with alot of cards purely put in the second pile because the deck type would enver work without them. The result was only 4 original cards.
Lol, this is a good article and I think its really got a few of us thinking, now if we could just get it out there into the public, it would then really start some comotion. So many decks are alike, the previous tourney I went to even had three Last turn decks there, three! I mean the ideas originole but when three people play it... thats just sad.
