This scenario was badly broken, if only because of the special attacks not being affected, because of the +100pts build total and the extra order per turn. Liao's advantage just wasn't big enough to counter those 3 facts. One of the guy at my venue played Leo Riordan and the 2 Dashers. Charge madness, he totally ripped open 2 of us and lost one to bad die roll (no kidding, he kept missing everyone of his attacks... and his opponent kept hitting everything). It just wasn't fair. Sure, it was possible to win for Liao, but it was a pretty step hill and you had to have a fair bit of luck and face an army without too much arty.
Next campaign should be more fun. still the 300 vs 400 pts Liao/SS, but we get 5 command-detonated mines. I am -so- going to mine up my opponent's deploy zone (I can't put mines -inside- but I can put them -right next- to his deploy zone). It's still a bit one-sided, but it -seems- a lot more fair.
But yeah, first campaign was broken.
And yeah, Liao allways get the shaft scenarios.
Be careful with mining the deployment zone. If you go first you can't hurt the SS player. And if he moves out of the zone you'll have wasted some mines.
Well, I posted some criticisms on the Envoy forums but Wizkids didn't bother to respond.
Like I said there, they are basically giving Liao the finger and saying deal with it.
Hey Draddog, if you read this, I meant every bit about Wizkids flipping us off!
I don't think the scenario was broken, instead I think it was purposely unbalanced in favor of the Swordsworn. Since this was a storyline scenario I think Wizkids wanted to steer the outcome of the battle in so the outcome matched their future storylines.
This can make for a more of a challenge in game. For those that play the game only to win the LE this is a problem, but for those who play for the fun of playing this can add another level of challenge to the game.
Now don't get me wrong I like winning as much as the other guy but I pefer to play a challenging game, have fun and lose than just feilding a uber force and rolling over my opponent.
If all I wanted was the LE, could buy it on ebay after the game.
My actual problem I had with this battle was not the scenario itself but the prize support. I feel the Mech was just to good(for an SS Mech that is) to be the prize for an unbalanced scenario.
An unbalanced scenerio imho should have 2 prizes of equal value to players that way even if you choose to play the underdog you still have a chance of winning at least as good a prize as the winner for fellowship.
Winning as the favorite is good but winning as the underdog is even better.
Just my 2 cents.
btw Lio won at my venue. This was due partly to the fact that there were less Lio players and more SS players so the alot of the SS players had to take a bye. Thats not balanced either its just part of the game.
Doesn't the scenario say you can't put the mines within 6 inches of either deploy zone and the mines can't be within 6 inches of each other? So you can't mine next to your oppent's deploy zone.
I played Liao in Mile High today and went 2-1 w/6 VCs for the day.
Liao obviously can't just sit there in the DZ and try and get in to an arty war because they essentially start down 1 VC so they have to take the offense and charge down the hill to even it up. That's essentially what I did.
I took:
LI Targe
Merc Balac
DF Maxim (load with)
Shadow Stalkers
SC Clan BA
SC Shock Troopers
and 1 HL Hoverbike
Granted if you played faction pure I doubt Liao would have had much of a chance in this one.
The Balac zipped in and swatted any arty found on turn 2 (i treated the Balac as expendable ... and it always did get expended, but generally always did it's job before getting clobbered). The Targe ran in to the DZ and proceeded to mix it up with everything else. The Maxim infantry dropped to tie up units or formation fire on an infantry formation with AnP or on a mech with energy to heat it up .. or ballistic to damage it. In game 3 I managed to salvage a SS Centurion and capture a SS Hatchetman.
I wouldn't say it was an impossible scenario ... but I think WK should have at least gave LI forces 100 pt. of VC2 to start the game with to balance it out.
In the end a SS player won the day at the venue though.
Once everyones units are down the hills then everyone is essentially on even footing and turns in to a nearly normal game (with the exception that infantry now have a slightly better chance than normal to hit a mech).
ROUND 1- My win was lucky, since the opponent brought too much artillery and set it up rather poorly, allowing me to base quite a bit with trike squads. Once Catalina crossed the board, his artillery and Tadaka were quickly destroyed by Catalina while he missed many attacks. (I was player 1)
ROUND 2- Opponent fielded SSw Ghost + Arty + SSw Balac + TAC drop. Trikes neutralized arty and Catalina moved across the board unhit dispatching artillery and the Ghost rather quickly. Unfortunately, the Balac critically hit me on it's first attack on the Shen Yi and then every additional attack hit (infantry, etc.) Lost Shen Yi in minute 59 as I missed the killing blow to a unit and then shut down. (I was player 2)
ROUND 3 - Opponent fielded dual towed arties, Arnis, DF Kanazuchi/Fenrir drops. Catalina scrapped Arnis but this opponent dispatched my trike squads quickly and used the kanazuchi drops to stall Catalina in midfield. Succumbed to artillery. (I was player 2)
I agree with you that balanced scenario are the best but an occasional unbalanced senario to further the storyline is ok with me as long as WK doesn't make a habit of it.
It just appeals to the role player in me to play the storyline games even if they are unbalanced.
I also play faction pure in most games I play even if it puts me at a disadvantage against the multifaction uber armies. Again this is just for role playing purposes and just the way I prefer to play.
Also even if the points are balanced in the scenerio it does not mean that it will be a balanced game. If I can afford to buy every unit I want and I play a person that has limited funds, it still becomes unbalanced because I can afford to field a better army than he because I have more and better units to choose from.

again just my 4 cents now lol
The whole point of the storyline games is supposed to be to let the PLAYERS control how the storyline flows, not have us play out WK's "vision" of what the storyline should be.
the scenarios are disapointing because the whole idea of the storyline scenarios was to allow the players to decide how things progressed. i'm not saying that we don't have a say in how it progresses, if liao ends up winning november then the planet will belong to liao.
but the way the scenarios are set up liao will loose anyway because no one likes to loose and there are more people who hate house liao than there are those who like them or are willing to play them especially when they will loose most of the time.
Obviously, SS was supposed to assault the plateau. Whoever created the scenario got it totally back asswards. Not only was the scenario unbalanced but it did not live up to the storyline.
WK was warned many times about this and did NOTHING. Too busy working on baseball clix.
Now we are facing week2 with more of the same. Give liao +100 VC2 to even things up a bit.

Yep - starting with some of the problems with the campaigns waay back when MWDA first came out and MK was beginning to run campaigns as well. C'mon -it's only been a year, and as other have said in other threads, it can take easily a year to make a change. . .
Man, all these jacked up campaigns do nothing for me.
I have played in only one campaign game since July of this year, and that's only because I needed some trade bait.
WizTopps lost me when they did the Bannson's in the middle hose job back in July. And I only partcipated in that to get the participation sheet so as to order the LE's for that month. I traded off the BR LE Mongoose for the DF LE Hatchetman.
I'm sure alot of other players have bailed too and all it hurts is your venues.
wizkids does anything to get the scenarios won by those who they want to win them
the highlanders won the first battle for addicks..so they made a second campaign on the planet(happened only once!!!) to have them lose the planet again...
"help to create the mechwarrior storyline"..yep yep..sure thing
