I think 3 or 4 is a good number. I mean a year is a long ### time for only one expansion. It would have to be quite large or the game would lose A LOT of players due to sheer boredom. 3 or 4 little expansions or 2 humungo ones a year is enough to keep people interested in both the game and of course the story line. I mean I Dark Age and FFE came out a full year apart how many of you would be here. DFA would still be a month or so off. I mean who doesn't like anticipating the arrival of a new expansion and then going to the store and seeing the shelves stocked full of it. I dont know about you guys but I feel like a kid in a candy store, I love it!
I enjoy the game much more, the more figs there are out there, and you ought to consider the economics of it: new releases really drive down the price of singles and boosters from the old sets. Right now, online stores are selling DFA and Liao boosters for LESS THAN FIVE dollars. I mean heck, that's a good excuse to buy a few more boosters and just sit alone in the middle of my floor playing with my MWDA collection. I was pleased with Liao because it didn't introduce anything like helos or artillery that changed the game balance so much I couldn't afford not to invest more money. Now, two months after it's been out, I'm thinking about starting a Liao collection from scratch.
I'm happy with the release schedule, the thing that annoys me is that I miss getting LE's in the mail, and wish that WK would revive this somehow, maybe a subscription program, like fruit of the month club?
What scares me is the possibility that this will all end soon, that WK won't make more than three more expansions, and people will just stop playing MWDA. I had this dream last night that I was locked in the comic store bathroom, I was banging on the door, the light was slowly getting dimmer, and I was there up to my knees in MWDA figs. I woke up crying, got my BR Legionnaire and sucked on my thumb for awhile.
I'm with you on this one, Pyro. 3-4 boosters a year is just enough to keep a person excited. If I hadn't gotten a new expansion since FFE, I would have long ago dropped the game.
Maybe part of my opinion on this stems from the fact that I don't try to complete a set, so much as simply acquire some of the cooler pieces.
OT: To this day, I still haven't pulled a VTOL from DFA; so I keep buying those boosters to the exclusion of LI boosters.
3 per year is great - it gives you enough time to try to get the stuff you want. Then as you get bored because you have what you want, more cool stuff is available to throw your money at and keep your interest.
As for the previous post, it took me forever to pull VTOLs from DFF and LI. Now, I swear I pull one every time - lets just say if MWDA was real, I would have a VTOL army as big as the U.S.A's
As for the mail ins, I'm all for it to continue - but more should be available. I play at WizKids approved venues on the average of 2-3 times a week. I win an LE at least 1/3rd of the time. There have only been 5 mail-ins since MW:DA came out - but more than 120 LEs available from venues, conventions, tournaments, etc. More should be available via mail-ins.
Well, as someone who plays in a poor circle of friends. . . I like 3 a year. Certainly, I'll never own so much as half of any set, but neither will my friends. The only unit we have in common is that everyone I know has a green SC blackhawk. (What, did they produce too many? It's almost the only mech we have two copies of, and we have 4 of them).
Point being, it keeps it so the moderate players will always get to see new things when they go out, but the people who are funding this game (as much as I hate always losing to the people who have spent thousands on the game, they keep the game on the production lines, so I say, if you're willing to spend thousands of dollars, your welcome to my pants. Um, that's an inside joke.
Here's my caveat: new units/rules. Transports, artillery, vtols. The fact is, whenever one of those came out, you had to have them, they changed the game so much that if you didn't have the new expansion with them, you might as well just surrender half the time because actually playing it out is an excercise in precision slaughter. :-p
My only VTOL is from LI. Trying to figure out what to buy so I can get an arty piece or two.
So, no more than one new rule/mechanic/unit type per year, tops. (I don't mind new rules like the proposals, just new rules that only effect one expansion). We need a balance, enough figs for deep pockets, but few enough game changing stuff that I don't have to spend 300 dollars a year to stay competitive (for the record, college kids are rich. Try law students.) I mean, I know the kid who took first place in Star Wars worlds a few years back, spent some time in boundary waters with him (middle of nowhere on teh canadian border), and I understand that the top world players will probably have to own darn near everything, or will, just because you have to love the game a lot to do that. But I'd like to be able to say that if #1 worlds player used my pieces to build an army, and someone like me used his army, he'd have a chance of beating me.
That said, I forgive them because the early expansions are about building the game. I was just unfortunate that I spent big on darkage, then stopped playing for a year, so I'm behind. I own 2 fire for effect boosters, one Death From above booster, and something like 3 liao incursion boosters. And boy am I happy with my new luck, who knew that 1/2 of all your mechs didn't have to be non-modified construction mechs (my friends and I were imposing limits on each other to keep armies fair "you can't buy one more booster unless I do", but they all agreed I was allowed 3 more boosters because of my luck. :-p). And did you know, that it IS possible to get a unique in a booster? (None in my first 15 boosters, 12 of which were darkage).
Mail orders: I understand that they are complicated. I'd be happy with one mail in of some kind per expansion (3 a year). I have few enough uniques (I split a premier, so two) that any unique is cool. As long as they're interesting uniques. (Preferably nothing I look at and go: "nah, I'll use a spider". Something cool, maybe even representative of the set. (For example, I should have been able to mail in for a cool Liao piece with some Liao incursion event. When/If Jade falcons is introduced, it should be like a cool 200 point Jade Falcon loki or something.
