I'm certain to be buying less boosters. I started with CA with the lack of RotS, buying only into sealed events & the marquee to get my boosters. Since the Marquee, I've bought mebbe 6-8 boosters total, and don't plan to buy any more soon.
Depending on how the faction balance issue (ie, more RotS & SH and less LI) is addressed, I may just eBay the collection. WK is treading on thin ice at the moment, in my opinion.
Ok. So the older units get phased out. Each set that goes out will take a few 'power-pieces' with it. This sounds like a good thing doesn't it?
I think it will actually greatly depend on what comprises the new set and if there are any new power pieces. We haven't seen the new design team in action yet. Hopefully with Kelly in charge the new sets from here on out will truly have balanced units. The problem comes if we do end up with new power-pieces. It will make them that much more potent as there will be fewer existing pieces out there that can counter the new stuff. In that case most all armies will start to look alike ... much more so than they do today. And since the old power pieces are gone and everyone will be scrambling for the new ones, that will drive up the cost of those new pieces. Look at the SS A4 ... there have been no retirements as of yet and this unit sells regularly for $20-40 a piece. I can only imagine what the prices will be like for the new power pieces after sets start being retired. A single such piece will probably end up going for as much as what Mason used to go for on the singles market. How is that supposed to help new players?? You are giving them few options:
a) Shelling out an insane amount of $ on the singles market for a single unit in order to be competitive.
b) Forcing them to buy a full case in the hopes they will get at least one of those power pieces (which, incidentally is iffy at best considering the rarity of some pieces in the sets these days. Again ... use the SS A4 as an example. There seems to be a 50% chance of even pulling just ONE of them in a case. That's pretty darn rare.)
c) The player just goes without and will always be on the tail end of the power curve and will lose more often than not to the players that have the power pieces (given players of equal skill/ability).
Option C is pretty much what we have today. But at least we have a good deal of players at the moment. If you go through with the retirement I think a lot of veteran players will indeed drop out. So you will still be left with the same type of environment we have today … it will just be with different pieces and far fewer players.
Existing players could try to sell off the stuff they have of the set that is retiring in the hopes of getting $ to get enough of the new stuff that is coming out ... but chances are this will flood the singles market with so much of that old set that the value of those figures will plummet to $0 so this won’t work.
I think as a concept this looked good on paper maybe to WK when it was first brought up ... but the reality I think is going to be far different than what WK was imagining.
I was shocked at the Petition to stop MW Retirement thread. No problem to date has ever spurred this much discussion. That thread was up to about 13 PAGES of responses in under 24 hours. That's pretty much unheard of. It shows just how many people want to voice up on this and how many are NOT in favor of it. And I read in the transcript of last nights online chat that WK states they have not gotten much negative feedback. What?? I can't see how they can say that in good conscience. This is the most feedback I've seen on ANY issue to date and its been resoundingly negative. At one point WK stated that they have gotten a lot of positive responses. From who?? Certainly not from this forum from the looks of it.
I will wait a while and see what happens but I think it's pretty likely I'll end up dropping this game if the above trends appear to happen as predicted. That's not a decision I take lightly and have given it a lot of thought. I've been playing and supporting this game from day 1 and stuck with it through thick and thin and have not really seriously thought at any point of dropping it ... until now.
Don't get me wrong I do love the game and support it and wish it the best. But I guess we will have to pray that the new design team are a flawless buncha folks (I know Kelly is … dunno bout the rest of em :) ). I guess will just have to wait to see what happens.
I voted that I would buy less, but I do not think ht epoll takes into accounts just how much less that would be. In truth I may end up buying nothing due to a total lack of interest in my area. Everyone is pretty mad, and there's no sense in collecting a game that no one else is playing.
I opted for the quitting option. It isn't even because they are going to ban the figures, which does suck. It is because they are a bunch of dishonorale, lying bastards, and I have no use for that.

I voted less boosters, since I am not saying I quit, but I will not be buying more boosters, playing until my pieces are banned/retired. Now, that being said, on one other note, Wizkids could still fix this, and choose to phase out pieces, if they actually bothered to consult their consumer/fan base about some of these changes and see what compromises we might be willing to make.
I'm taking a more moderate stance (wait and see how the retirement plans work out), but I will still be buying fewer boosters. The reasons are as follows:
1) I buy too many already (an average of 1+ case per release).
2) Unless the faction balance is in the favor of the factions that I will be playing at the time of the release, I'm not going to "play the odds" to try to find the pieces I want.
3) With the frequency of Sealed/Draft events, I will already be buying some boosters per release.
4) I'm going to get very tired of having to buy boosters every 6 months just to replace "retired" units.
I will continue to support my venues by buying their wares, but I can't say for sure if those products will be WizKids products.
Now, if WizKids drops the MSRP for boosters from $10 to $8, I think you'll hear a much happier tune.
I am somewhere in between buying less (Much Less) and stop buying. As in I will pay entry fee in places that have it. Usually a booster. And I may occassionally play in sealed games. Not likely buy possible.
I will certainly not be buying the 1-2 cases I average on sets now.
I may buy/trade those final few pieces I need to complete the sets up until now but I will probably stop collecting future sets.
There should be another option: None. I will buy everything off of the Secondary market.
Reason: because if I just don't outright quit, I will not be buying any boosters unless I'm forced too (sealed events). Right now, I'm tipping in favor of quitting Approved Play altogether, selling my extras, and using the remaining pieces for casual play and Classic.
I usually just get a case of the latest set then trade/buy any missing or good units as needed. Most of the boosters I get are from older sets to fill in holes in the collection, get some better or rarer (due to the age of the set) units. If they retire sets and make the figs not legal for tourney play, I'll have to cut back and just do the one case per set plus trading instead of the 4+ boosters per week of the older sets.
I plan on buying what I want in singles and MABY a few boosters now and then. I'm also liquidating my collection, whats the point of having all those units is I can only use them for a while longer?
I will continue to play, till there is no one to play against, then I will just play with myself (heck, I almost feel like I am doing that already). from this point on, WKs will never see any money from me. I know that they could care less wether or not I am buying their product (they will not survive or fail because of what I do, it is kinda like the presidental election, a single vote has never counted, it is just bulked all together), and that is OK, the amount of money I have spent is quite a bit to me, but just a drop in the bucket to some people.
I can not afford to purchase units over and over again. I have had enough trouble buying boosters and getting nothing worth a darnnd, getting more units that are worthless to me, now I am being told that I might end up buying units that I have had for a couple of years, if I buy new boosters.
as I read somewhere else, I wish I could remember where, I could have spent $500.00 on a whole computer system, and when the better computer comes out I could have upgraded it without being told "your old computer is being retired, and yes you can still use it, but just not be able to interface with the newer models, so we havent banned it, it is just now useless, if you want to continue it in todays enviroment" (I had a great computer system, the Amega, then they did just that, they upgraded their base operating system, and in order to use the new programs, you were forced to buy a whole new system, well, I didn't, and neither did a lot of other people, I wonder where they are now. durring the same time most of the other computer systems were allowing people to upgrade, and while your computer might have got bulky and slow, it still worked with all of the other systems, eventually people would feel the need to get a whole new system, but they were never forced to (P.S. I am very computer stupid, so I could be very wrong, but that is the way it did work out for me)and yes I still do drag out that old computer and I use it, not often, but I do, so by WKs reasoning, it is still useable.)
I know I have got off topic, and I am sorry, so to make it short, I will never spend any money on any WKs products, and while they might do just fine and become the largest game company in the world because of their decision, I will not care, as I will not be contributing anything like money to them again. ;)
I usually buy 2 cases or more (sealed).. Then I play in Tons of Sealed events and buy probably another case or two just walking into the store touching them and having to buy them.
