And I hate to be the lone dissent, but the schedule they annouced long ago had no more "mass retirements" but a set by set retirement. That would only put out LI in Jan, with CA following in May, then FP in Sept and so on.
You might be confusing people expectations based on what they did with Mage Knight for official announcements. After the "mass retirement" of Mage Knight, they went set-by-set for a set or two.
The current plan is to retire sets once a year, at the beginning of the year. Kevin's stated that Falcon's Prey will not be retired next year. That implies that Counterassault and Liao Incursion will be.
That makes sense, given WizKids has said you can expect about a 2 year tournament lifespan for expansions (and 2 1/2 years for a base set). Counterassault will be 2 years old in January.
Actually, David, I see it happening just a little differently...
In January, we will get a new st and retire LI and CA. That will leave us with FP, AoD, FiP, AN and the Jan set as legal. Then we will get the set again in May, bringing us up to 6 legal expansions. Then with the September set, we will see the retirement of FP which will be at that time 2 years and 1 month old. From that point on, you will get a set by set retirement, thereby always having 6 sets legal at any time AND not cutting the lifespan of FP short as well as giving us the "predictable" schedule of retirement that was mentioned in the initial chat. Unless you are privy to info that I don't have...
Then we will get the set again in May, bringing us up to 6 legal expansions.
I'm 99% sure that Kevin has said that retirements will be done once a year, rather than once per set. It might have been mentioned previously in the Mage Knight variation of his thread. However, the context implied that it would apply to all lines (at least, all his lines).
Just some old tidbits, none of it supports either method of retirement.

[16:28] When MechWarrior: Age of Destruction releases in January of 2005, Dark Age, FFE and DA will be retired. These will be the only MechWarrior retirements for 2005.
[16:28] The next will be in January of 2006.

[16:59] As per the original announcement it is always our intention to give players at least 24 months of WizKids Approved Tournament Play. Remember, we are not stopping....
[17:00] you from using them in unrestricted events (which we obviously have been supporting) or in casual play.

[18:24] While I'm not going to confirm that the last three expansions will be retired in 2006 (I'm not sure if they are or not to be honest - I don't have the schedule on me).....

None of the 'Mech armies I fought just rolled over and died. Seriously, just because Tank Drop made it so high in the standings, doesn't mean that 'Mechs are underpowered. Actually, if it wasn't for PCCs, I'd think that 'Mechs would consistently win over Tank Drop (God knows I won two games just because I played Dust Storm). Most games with 'Mech vs. Tank Drop really do boil down to player skill and luck. I'm sorry, but that's how it is.
Secondly:
SUPER SECRET FORMAT?!?!?!?!??!
Bring 1000 pts of legal units, and an optional 500 pt sidebar...no max limit on how much you bring. You know what? I think they're going to do a Faction War on us, where your units, when killed, are permanently killed, and must be supplemented from your sidebar. God, this thing looks scary! And when will they announce it? On the spot? Man, that'll make for some fun army building, haha.
1500 min points suggested. I'm thinking I'll start laying out about 15,000 points, just to be safe LOL (Now what has me curious, if I have, for example, Arnis in my 500, can I have 2 more Arnis in my 1000+ and replace Arnis when/if he goes down?) Why no mention of the force being faction pure? And of course, what is the main part of the army going to consist of? (Something like last year where they hand everyone an identical box of figures, and then you supplement with what you brought???)
Of course, I'd much rather see the Constructed portion being 600 points and Faction pure (or aligned or merc) but that is highly doubtful to ever come to be.
I'm willing to bet that at least half the Constructed armies will have Mechs in them.
The lack of an upper limit on the sidebar is intriguing; I'm expecting to see more than a few people show up with suitcases filled to the brim with duplicates of the good pieces, yours truly included. :p
I know the feeling. I had a plan, but that plan went out the window Friday. Sure, the Constructed army is staying the same, but now, I am totally focused on that 1500+ point bringalong.
I'm bringing an empty duffle bag, inside the rigid suitcase. Then the suitcase contents get emptied into the duffle bag, clothes and so on, and the suitcase holds all the goodies I'll be buying LOL
