Actually? Last year's event wasn't lopsided in the least. I'm pretty sure just about every available faction was played. Check the thread from last year, a great load of fun was had by all.
The idea behind it was simple. Play, without the overaggressiveness of the grand tournament hanging over every move. Have some fun. Take some pressure off the whole week of round by round "gotta win" stuff.
And you might want to try it. Seems that most of last year's top 8 were players in the scrubby match. Maybe the 'destress' idea is helpful?
As for me, I'll be playing HD/SwSw. No doubt in my mind. Why? I like them.
Matt, this year, going to allow or deny missions/PC's ??
No offense. But if Kenneth, BR LE Combat Engineers, and BR Sprints are legal for play, and I know there's at least one BR player there, I won't play. Seeing those units in my opponent's army totally precludes any possibility of "fun" for me (where "fun" is different than "victory", that is).
Don't get me wrong. It sounds like fun. But there's nothing more stressful than building a seriously fun army around Aldwin Stewart only to get trumped by a regenerating Kenneth backed by BR Pride and free extra orders.

Assuming we have enough people to start as a tournament (and it is already looking like we will), we are going to run PCs/Missions as normal in a 3 round tournament.
Feh! I've never owned, let alone played a BR Sprint. I never cared for their presense in the game. Medchelke, fine.. he's a fun piece but isn't as terribly accurate as other artillery units.
This is billed as a fun game, and I'm sure the people playing in it would abide by that general theme.

I wasn't able to attend last year. Hopefully I'll be able to swing out there this time. Hey Trev ... give me your army loadout from last year and I could play it on your behalf. heh. ;)
In point of fact I really don't play for fun anyway. I play to win.
Well, isn't that a wonderful mindset. Unfortunately that never works for me. Every time I try to play to win, for example because there's a card that I really would like to have, the dice are against me and with the opponent. Personally I prefer to play outside the tournament scene, unfortunately the people I currently play with consider every non-tourney game to be practice for the tournaments. If I can actually get other people interested in this game, I will recommend them not to join the local tournament scene.
That's not a great mindset either. Around here we had a very ubercompetitive environment for a while, but with time, and enough players, it got away from that. Now people play to win, sure, but they do it with some fun. We have players come in from other areas, sit for a tournament and want to come back, win or lose.
Point being, every game has winning as a goal. If you're not trying to win, you're not playing. But there's a difference between the cutthroat "do anything to win" tournament, and the "I want to win and have some fun" tournament. Nationals is just that kind of cutthroat environment. Win every game, watch every rule, call every foul.
This tournament was designed to be just the opposite of that. Bring a faction you want to play, a force you believe in. PLay your heart out. And win or lose, you take nothing away from the tournament that you didn't bring, well, except for alot of giggles, and some fun experiences. This is playing the game, against some very good players, and yet you get nothing out of it aside from the play.
You want a local tournament scene that isn't cutthroat? Talk to your players. The way we did it around here? Every seasoned player goes faction pure in all but the most serious tournaments. National Qualifiers are exempt, though many go faction pure anyway. And honestly, it's made better players of each and every one of them. They learned to elevate their play skills, not their pieces. And when they realized they are good players, the "I can beat you for X prize" thing just kinda went away. Now, every player around here is a true lover of the game, and not just of the prizes. They play to play.
I agree that the whole "I don't play for fun" mindset is counterproductive, but even if you're having fun, you should be playing to win.
