No big difference down here, just some remote places don't have as many people in to that stuff. NE has a ton of players and the venue has about 10 people sometime, just about average.
CujoWolfSlay,
I would suggest trying to start something on your own. If you don't think that the Warlords in your area are doing a good enough job start running tourneys yourself. Try getting more people into the game in your area.
Azkael,
Try coming down to Danger Planet in Waltham, it's only about 20-30 minutes down 95. It's a great store with some decent turnout for events.
I swear, it seems like MK is going to die at least once every other month, sometimes every month. MK is in solidly now, it'll be around for a good while.
I'm starting to see more and more people show up. Dungeons and Rebellion have an equal following. However, it seems HC has little support. I'm going to a tourny in about 2 hours, I'll let ya know how many show up.
Hopefully Wizkids won't screw up MK the way WotC screwed up MTG or the way Score recently screwed up the DBZ CCG. If Wizkids is smart, Mage Knight should hang around for quite a while. Here's hoping...
HC is fun, but I know some comic book people who joined just to get a complete set of <insert name of their fav hero here>. HC will never topple Mk, at leat not in its present form. The real question here is has WizKids grown waaaaayyyyy too fast:confused: ? It seems the quality of their products is slipping (although I want some of the LE's that are in Conquest packs). It really does seem like they could turn into Wizards of the Coast (or what's left of 'em).
around here the only thing that is played is mage knight. oh, a few people may play hero clicks but they are few and far between. the local warlords dont really do much to promote the game but one. he just was made one and set up a tourney right away. he hands out flyers around town and neighboring towns to get people into it. he has done a great job. and as for as dungeons goes. i think i blows chunks. i only played it once but that was way to many times. how in the *+=@! am i supposed to kill the frickin demolishing ape that has toughnes with only 1 click of damage?! i ran like .... and was mowed down. maybe it is better with more people but it stunk with just two people. we are not puxhing that here at all.
Once I received Warlord status in March, I organized a schedule of two tournaments a week for April, one on a Wednesday night at 5 pm and one on Friday at noon. Starting off slow I kept it at 200 for the first 4 events and then kicked it up to 300. That served as a good break-in period to introduce sanctioned play.
In May I have run points all over the place from 200 to 500 and held the first booster tournament, a format I will run once a month.
For June I'll add a monthly Sunday Conquest tournament to the mix. In July we'll see how the new Campaign format plays out.
Having a close friend who owns the Venue and a good core of gameplayers who play a nice variety of other games and who dabbled a bit in MK during 2001 set me up for taking a game that was simply casual and not doing much in early spring and turning it into our Venue's hottest product. Now we've got problems keeping stuff on the shelf, plenty of Uniques, nons and LE's available and a nice play area for pickup games as well as our tournaments. I have had as many as 9 players at once and I have 20 registered players to go with 4 who are too young to register, which puts me in the #1 spot in Oregon on a per-capita basis for market penetration. As a bonus I have 2 of Oregon's top 10 players and a third who flirts with a top 25 ranking.
Special things like having a complete set of posters on the wall, proper playmats all layed out with dice, tapes and counters when the players show up, a new rack of lights to illuminate the play area and the monthly schedule posted on the wall help create a good atmosphere that says "we care about MK here!" The Venue does a fine job ordering stock from distributors and buying cases of out-of-production sets in case lots so all the players can get all the needed figures to build solid armies.
Add in fair prices for singles, a willingness to trade on the Venue's part, the free entry except for booster events held monthly and a nice group of players to work with means we have a fine MK scene here in Oregon's Bay Area.
Heroclix and Dungeons are two things I am avoiding right now as I am trying to focus the playgroup and the sales upon MK Rebellion and after June, Conquest. I believe in getting the playgroup settled in and adding one thing a month so they don't feel overwhelmed. One new thing a month works to keep them entertained and then having the varying point formats keeps things fresh.
With the first of the Titans coming out in August I expect to move plenty of product for the store related to Conquest. Already people are picking up MDF Dragons for getting ready in June's first Conquest tournament. By August with 2 Conquest tournaments under their belts I expect no problem in moving MDF's and Titans after that. Once WizKids gets the Castle pieces out for points redemption, I will buy a complete set to build a large 2-Tower/1 Keep arrangement and that should kick the sales of that product line into gear come early fall. By then we'll be firmly entrenched as a game to play heading into the end of our first 6 months as a sanctioned Venue and primed for the Marquee event when the new set comes out and ready for any new Titan/MDF figures coming down the road. With Rebellion, Conquest, booster events, Campaign and Marquee events hitting on all cylinders, especially after a solid summer of getting the school-age kids in full force, I expect MK to remain a solid force for game play in my area so long as the Venue owner and I give unstintingly of our time and energy to develop it.
MK can only die if we neglect it down here and I believe any Venue and any Warlord who work hard at developing the game in their area can get people involved in this great game and make it breathe for a long time to come.
MK is not dead! Dungeons is lacking only because there are but so many dungeon crawls one can do, but i was playing once a week with other gamers until Sinister came out, then we decided to give Dungeons some time off. Though we had a tourney last week, had 8 people play. Not spectacular i know, but we had fun.
HC is an ok game, but i'm not getting any of it since i don't need the added financial hassle and they don't have my 3 favorite heroes in it anyways.
HC has been selling off the shelves at my favorite gaming store like crazy! And further proof that MK isn't going anywhere, i saw someone buy 2 towers and the wall set (both 1 & 2) today.
The only way that Wizkids will go under is if they come out with lousy products, increase their prices. Other than that they're gonna be fine for a looooong time, just like WotC is with M:tG, even though alot of people i know have lost interest in it. I have but still like the game, so i keep tabs on it and get stuff if i can afford to.
in my opionion, Mage Knight is killing itself, games stopped being a contest of skill...and started being a "my unique is better than your unique" once we had 50 uniques to choose from...it started getting dumb...i mean, seriously, who really plays unique-less armies these days??? or plays a new idea??? you either play a unique, or you play a typical set-up of nons...i want to see something new...like when WW came out, new special abilities = a whole bunch of new ways to play...right now i'm just waiting for MWDA...which IMO will be much better...as it stresses a good combo of figures...which will be cool...
