It's gonna make for a very competitive, very unfriendly game environment. I wonder if maybe they should start a MK "Pro Tour" if they're gonna have huge prizes like that...
I think a better prize than one of -everything- WK makes, would be a figure in the next expansion of your personal character.
Now -that- would be a prize; immortality in the world of MK! :)
why is there only these competitions in the states cant u have one in ohh say Vancouver Canada?? And giving away a prize like that.. we have small compititions that have a single LE as a prize but nothing like that.
Okay people, to all you complaining about why not here. Where are the biggest cons held? Where is the majority of the fan base for Wizkids products? What country contributes the most (in sales) to the prize support buget? If another country can come close to the US in all these major catagories then I say they deserve the same level of prize support.
In response to your post StarRanger, sure the US has the greatest buying power of any nation in the world but if Wizkids wants to compete with some other gaming giants like Gameworkshop and Wizards of the Coast they just can't dedicate all of their prize support to the US. They have to expand worldwide and try to grab the attention of consumers from every other nation just so that there games are not just 2 year fads.
I am just disgusted at the way the National tournaments have been set up this year. I would rather had Wizkids totally put off them for the time being so that they are not rushing tournament dates( like they did for the Canadian Nationals) and have them set up global tournaments for players in Germany, Australia, Sinagapore and so forth because when you have a world championship you want the best players from around the globe and not just USA and Canada. I think that next year things will hopefully be better. But to have the US National winner walk away with this much free stuff is just sick. What are they going to give to the winner of the World Championship?? A new car?? $10000?? A job at Wizkids??
All that I know is that if they are going to constantly favor the US and shaft the rest of the world I can go and spend thousands of dollars on another companies products and I don't think I am alone in this complaint.
Another thing. With this much up for grabs, the qulaity of the games are definitely going to suffer. Winning will overshadow playing bringing with it all sorts of ugly things. Sportsmanship may go right out the door.
I really dont think a pile of plastic figs, is gonna turn it into a cut throat cheater fest. The prizes are worth about 5000$ total. Magic gives away 30,000$ and a lot of players are still cival and friendly at the protours.
Just make sure you and your opponent are doing things correctly and there shouldnt be much of a problem.
I really don't think its as big a deal as people are making it out to be, unless you live in columbus, Ohio(the site of origins). You spend a lot of money just getting there, if instead of going to origins you just spent the money on mage knight figures you could get almost all that stuff for sure as opposed to just a chance of winning all that great stuff think about it. Plane fair outside the midwest, hotel rooms for all the nights of origins, I've attending every gen con and origins since 1996 and I'm sure I've spent many times what the value of this prize is over the years. They give away big prizes because unless you live really close its a huge investment to go to them. I think that whoever wins this stuff will have spent a lot of money already on make knight not to mention on the hotel, food(not cheap in downtown), travel, badge, games.... You get out what you put into the hobby, more power to all the great mage knight players out there, I'm going to origins I'll enjoy all the games I play and maybe get a few LEs...
I am displeased at Wizkids only giving a set of ww les, 2 tanks and 4 dragons for the Canadian Nationals Winner and giving so much to players in the US. I understand that there are more Americans than other people who play MK but we got less than a 20th of what you guys get.
Bulduran: I have played in 3 tours and all of my opponents were cival. Sure they wanted to win, but none attempted anything sneaky or underhanded. At level 5 events the most minor infraction carries a stiff penalty. Also if you are playing at that level of event, you know the rules well enough to know what is or isn't allowed. Also the Judging staff is top notch and quick and efficient. Sure there has been a few problems, but not many. Thats quite an accomplishment for a card game.
Ok, that sounds like a lot of stuff, and would be pretty cool....but likely the guy winning it will have a bunch of those figures already won't he?
It sounds like Wizkids is just cleaning out the closets (promo video?!? you can see that online).
I agree with suggestion about a special LE in the next set. I'd rather give up 2/3rds of those prizes to have the opportunity to have input on a design of a future MK figure and have them named / promoted as designed by the winner.
...but wait, I'm from Canada and wouldn't have that option anyways! Maybe the Canadian National winner should be allowed to pick a color for one of the boxes of one of the sets of one of the future releases???:p
