dice are dice, unless they are starter dice, or loaded.
I use the offical Warlord™ tape measure, and the offical Warlord™ dice :) I used a similar tape measure before the warlord™ and i think Dave chase got the idea for the Warlord™ tape measure when he was at Rock-con, and saw me using them :) tho offically i cannot claim any right to the idea (A devil named "DemoMonkey" made we sign a waver in blood) ;)
I bought several retractable tape measures from the sewing department of the local hobby super store. They come in various "won't get lost on table" colors and cost .99c each. They look a lot like the Warlord rulers without the logo. The Warlord rulers cost as much as a Sinister booster. The tape part locks in place automatically when you pull it out and a simple push of the button reels them back in. They are a bit easier to use then metal hardware store ones because of the automatic locking feature. My only complaint is the click-click-click noise of the automatic rachet as you pull out the tape. You don't really notice it until some kid does it over and over for no reason. click-click-click-zoot, click-click-click-zoot, click-click-click-zoot, click-SMACK!
For dice I have some large clear D6 with smaller solid D6 inside of them. I only need to grab one dice to roll 2D6, when rolling one we count the outside one. As an unintended side effect the large faces but light weight of the dice keep them from rolling as far as the little solid dice do, and keep them from falling on the floor as much.
I saw some electronic D6 and got excited. You drop them on the table and they randomly light up some LEDs on the face to give you a number from 1 to 6. Unfortunately the things beep and boop and flash lights for a second or two before giving the number. This turns them from cool to annoying with a quickness.

I had a couple of those, and some of the fabric store cloth tape measures. They're gone. Between the starter sets I've bought (or used warlord points to get) and the tape measures I had from fabric stores, I figure I had close to 40. Now I have 3 or 4. I didn't mind giving them out -- it's that they went to the same kids, every week. Ones I loaned out had a nasty habit of growing legs and walking out of the store.
So, I have a new policy. I went and bought some 12" rulers (yeah, they don't bend. Forget your stuff, and learn that beggars can't be choosers.) If you need dice, rulers or tokens, I will rent 1 ruler, 2 dice and 10 tokens to you for the evening for $1. If I don't get the stuff back at the end of the evening, I keep the dollar. If I do, you get it back (for now -- if it's too popular, I'll start keeping 25 cents or something). If I find out that I can get $1 from you every week, I'll raise the price to $2 (but only for you -- everyone else stays at $1). If $2 doesn't teach you to bring stuff (or at least, give mine back!), I'll raise it to $3, $5, $50. . . I have no upper limit. :p
And, my WL tape measure and my dice are never, never loaned out. Figs I know loan only with collateral. And my terrain is now priced, so I can impliment a "you break it, you buy it" policy.
I use the starter ruler, which I worked all the creases out of by just bending it and rolling it, while I waited for my opponents to make their moves.
Up to now I have used the starter dice, but after last night, I think I will grind them up. I tried to break away twice with a mounted figure and rolled a 1 both times. Got the figure killed, because he could not get away. Cursed dice.
I do plan on switching from the starter dice to some cooler dice, after I go to Origins and pick up some cool Crystal Caste dice. As many gamers, I am very superstitious when it comes to dice, and I plan on picking these dice carefully.
I use my old D6s from D&D, with the numbers instead of dots!
And the regular starter ruler, my end is all chewed up though... Need to get an unlimited starter soon
My Girlfriend used to work at a fabric store.
People brought in their "spawn of satan" kids.
They paid no attention to the kids.
"click-click-click-zoot, click-click-click-zoot, click-click-click-zoot, click-click-snap"
All day long!
There are two types of these tape measures.
Type one (most fabric stores) doesn't have any space to grip while measuring.
Type two (Warlord) has a space before the Zero Mark to grip the tape by.
I've seen some of type two advertised on the internet, but they had misprint logos on the side and come 500 to a box.
My .99c fabric store one has a blue pastic tab that you pull to get the tape out, and hold when measuring. It is 60' long when fully extended. I have not seen a Warlord one IRL, but mine looks identical to the one they have on the WizKids site.
Funny how you can take a normal item and raise the price just by making it "for gaming". I bought a hot wire knife made for cutting foam for use with floral arrangements for $6. GW sells the identical tool "for gaming" terrain for $10 plus shipping. I bought a trading card case on clearance at K-Mart for $10 for my Magic cards. The local game shop owner saw me with it and bought all they had and resold them as Magic cases for $15.
When I got my first starter from unlimited I am sure I must have had the stupidest look on my face. I opened it up and tore out the figures of course and did the normal "oh wow, new mk toys!" thing. Then I pulled out the rulebook, new SA card, standard ruler and,,,,,,, "THE EVIL STARTER DICE".
How could they??????
I thought surely once they had a hit game and could afford to spend say 3 or 4 cents to manufacture dice instead of a half-cent, that they would. BUT NO! WK sticks with the same old starter dice - amazing!
I use the standard ruler, but must agree with many others that the starter dice should be destroyed.
I used a metal measuring tape i got at some gaming store that specialized in GW games, and as far as dice go....i used to hate the starter dice, cause my friends would refuse to use them since it gave them bad rolls. Then, after rolling critical misses at every tourney with my many dice, i brought some old starters into play...and rolled over 7 almost every time. Now, i'm all about the starter dice. :D At least, till i can snag some WL dice and tape.
