There's a very good chance that there are going to be a lot of Strikers and Corpheus'. I dont think that a KI swarm will be able to hold up agiainst the bound F/L. With Corpheus' three targets he pretty much take out an entire formation in one attack and with the proper use of harassment still be around to blast the other formation or two
corpheus can take out 1 formation and that is it. And I said nothing about standard, just swarm. The striker gets in a hit if it is lucky, and it is highly unlikely that the F/L will hit the standard bearer if the swarm player knows what they are doing.
I find it highly unlikely that corphues can take out 2 swarm formations by himself. The pyre spirit is much more of a threat to swarm than corpheus.
but like I said, I agree with shadowdeth-just play ML.
if there are going to be lots of fatty mobile uniques, play what kills them. Corpheus cannnot do much once he has taken that first shot and has a skeleton on his back or starts the game off by being rammed by a krugg and then having that on his back. The striker even more so than corpheus is beaten by ML, he cannot even outrange any part of it.
Corpheus' wont be able to take out a formation COMPLETELY by himself. But one got shot doing three damage to almost everyone in the formation will make it just mop up for other figures. I'm not to sure how ML will do in this tournament. THere are going to be over 40 people and there are at least 10 people who I'd call VERY good. Corpheus' 22 inch bound range means that he can get out of the range of a 1 techno army army and make you use all three actions in a two. He'll be able to bound in and flame your technos for the one click needed to get them out of ML and maybe still be able to pop your healer. Sure now he's only 12" away and subjected to a pounding but there's always the option to push and move 20" to a healer. Sure the Corpheus army is at risk, but with the quality of the players and the amount of them I dont think that a standard ML or swarm will be able to make it threw the tourny with the amount of Strikers and Corpheus' that I'm guessing will see.
are we talking 200 or 300 points? That makes all the difference in the world. If 300 points, play ML, no questions. You can literally take corpheus out of the game by turn 2 with ML/RAM (or if they go first, turn 1. Corpheus will get double rammed as soon as he gets into the 22" range of a techno or single rammed if he gets into range of the krugg.
Dear jebus, if it is 300 points and for a case, play ML. Forget that everybody is calling it cheese, just play it and win.
ML/ram completely rapes corpheus. If corpheus moves then he takes 2 damage no matter what (1 from ramming and then 1 from him pushing or if he does not, 1 from pushing the krugg to ram him.)
yes it is 300 points. But I still dont think thats its as simple as you make it sound. If it were a ML versus just Corphues then by alls means I agree with you. MI totally screws him and after a ram or two he's high priced ####. But then play playing Corpheus has 170 odd points of support. If I were going to bring Corpheus I'd have a couple of shades to act as an escort. With myabe two I could make it so you had to double lev your rammer, yes now I have to push Cor. and he's taken a second click but he just ran like a bat out of hell to a healer. and now you've stranded a rammer to be at the mercy of what ever bounder or charger I've decided to back Corpheus up with. And in my opinion I've I can use Corpheus to take out you techno's and have prevented them from being healed, then 120+ points might not be such a bad trade of for you 50 depending on what the rest of the two armies are. But by no means take my defense of Corpheus as an endorcement to bring him to the tourny you'll have a hard time winning with him. I just think that if one or two of the really good players decides to bring him they'll cause fits to swarms and MLs.
the top players play ML for a reason (when there are no MDF's).
If corpheus has a healer, then take it out first, simple as that. My bet is that people will play a corrupted priest b/c of its mobility. Just pop the priest. You do not have to kill the priest, just knock down its attack or even knock out healing.
300 point ML ram usually has 2-3 ML figs, 2 rammers, 1 scorpems and then support ranging from fells to toss figs.
My personal 300 point ML (I would use, if titans were allowed, then perhaps I would include an OST ;) ) is as follows and I have complete confidence that it could beat a corpheus or striker army-
I'd certainly play ML with Ram, probably Pyre Spirit as the main rammer because most people who play the high point bounders will likely depend upon their charge figures to act as bodyguards.
also, the new troll healer will be in that tourney, and that would likely be a good healer because it will likely have a decent attack (like the other trolls) and toughness keeping it from being rammed.
ML/Ram can be effective but personaly: 300pts, no MDFs, and no Titans and I would play the "Tank" in a minute.
EGM
Fell Reaper***
Heavey Lancer***x2
Light Lancer *** x2
ST* (?)
There is an LE version if you have rathgad and lightfoot which is better but the above works just fine. I would take it against anything else put up so far without a question. Range units aren't #### if you have a captive unit. If that captive is a mount with a mount then you have a moving wall. Throw a rammer and it is either captured or killed ( 3 actions 10-11 clicks of damge).
Ok most units will need between a 9-11 to hit a tank unit. Against a mount rammer the odds are in the tank players favor. a Krugg has a 16 or so defense Light lancers has a 10 attack and an 11 through the rear arc. The heavey has a 11 attack and of course the plus one. The game is a whole lot different when you need rolls of 3-4 and th eother guy needs 9-11. When all but 1 fig in your army breaks on a 2+ and you have 5 of your 7 units can move an attack at in the same turn. The army moves in one turn up to 12 in. The attacking units live for 9 clicks or so. One bad dice roll is not going to kill the tank but one dice roll is all that alot of armies are going to get.
OH MAN. The trash talkin has already started. I love it! Orc Monkey doesnt need any help though. Since i plan on being there he needs to fend for himself. If you have been playing a year then you should have a good enough idea of what works and what doesnt. :)
And for for Flying Moose and Newport Harry, you are both wrong. Doesnt matter who is in shotgun i am driving the semi thats comin straight at ya!
See everyone there.
PS I thought i saw somewhere that the heroic packs arent tournament legal til after the tourney (10/05)? I could be mistaken.
Since the original poster didn't seem to mention what kind of experience he had or what kind of army he likes. I would recommend playing something easy, flexible, and forgiving of mistakes. ML/ram/bound is probably the best answer for that with a solid healer tossed in.
Something like:
Techno
Magus( only for a heavy hitter, If your not afraid of high defenses than another techno in his place)
1-2 War krugg
1-2Scorpem***
Shamen*** or Krugg Seer
shades to fill
Maybe a Amotep gunner or two or a charger if you can mess with the points. It will give him flexibility and an army that most people will be scared to charge into letting him pick a fight at a distance where he is best suited.
Telling him to play a army with a very low error threshold like GA is not the best advice.
Let me clear up a few things about this tournament:
1)It is 300 point head-to-head and is going to be held at Interzone Cards and Comics on October 5th. All are welcome, but it is recommended that you let Calin know you're coming (he is planning some nifty prize support in addition to the case, so knowledge of how many players there will be would help him greatly).
2)Corpheus is released on september 11th and tournament legal on september 25th, and will certainly make an appearance at this tournament.
3)If you think a KI swarm can beat corpheus/striker, then you need to come to two realizations. The first being that breaking away exists in the game of mage knight. The second being that the opponent has less than half of their army in this figure, so count on support.
4)Orcmonkey, Crazybones, NeportHarry, and others. really, just send your money to me so I can buy the case. I feel bad that you're all wasting time building armies and making the drive down to Gresham just to get your asses handed to you.
Hope this clears things up.
For the record, I feel that the best armies for a no MDF/Titan tournament (and I said this quite a while back when I brought up Corpheus in our clan forum), are KI cav, Corpheus/striker based armies, and ML/Ram. Now, which of these is best? I don't really think we'll figure this out through deduction. It's been proven time and time again that these forums are flawed when trying to figure out in-game scenarios (there are just too many variabilities). My recommendation to anyone who plans to play in this tournament is to playtest. It will get you farther, faster, then arguing these things to death on a forum.
OK OK OK everyone calm down, its only a game and no one is guarnted to win the case, it comes down to who plays the best and who gets lucky. if you think that you can walk in and win the tournament then you are so very wrong, we know alot of the people that are coming but what about all the other Unkown people. They could walk in have a perfect game and walk away with a case. no has a guarented case but everyone has a good chance. and thanks to everyone who has submited their armies i will thake them into consideration.
