Originally posted by elkmaven ...a guaranteed to eliminate "uber figs" and such from ruling is this: When going head to head with someone you play two games, you play your armies against each other. then switch, you play his army and he plays yours.
Unfortunately you get penalized for playing a horrible player (with a bad army) while you will do best against an average player (with a decent army) and you will still lose to a superior player (who can play both armies better than you!)
The point would be that you lose to the better player who can beat you with both armies(that is what makes th eplayer better). And if the player is bad(which doesnt necessarily mean he has a bad army) you should be able to beat him both times.
I like sealed as one of multiple formats but not the only format. Too much additional luck is invovled. Although I agree it depends largely on the set. Even so you can get rotten pulls in unlimted that pretty much hose you. Minions is not a good for a sealed set. I hope you can get some kind of resolution to this.
Each player brings a preconstructed 300 point army. At the start of each HTH match a coin would be flipped. On heads, the players would switch armies, on tails they would play what they brought.
This would minimize the cheese armies and make for a fairer competition.
I enjoy the sealed booster format immensely, and believe that it is possible to overcome bad pulls against an equally skilled player who has good pulls.
However, such randomness is not the way to determine a National Champion, in any country.
I like some of the ideas you guys are kicking around in here. Looks good...
Excellent idea David!!! Preconstructed 300 pointers and flip a coin. That would really seperate the week players from the ones that know what they are doing!
Let's hope someone at WizKids is watching this thread and the petition thread.
I think that's the way its always been. You play a Sealed Booster to narrow the field down to 8 finalists who then play 200 point H2H constructed for the championsip. So the top 10k runners vie for the 100 meter sprint championship. Makes perfect sense to me!
I may be going to the Nationals this year and it would really suck if it was just sealed format. I really wouldn't be proud of beating frenzy because all he had was wood golems(not that they dont rule;) ) Thats the kinda thing I wouldn't even brag about. People who don't have the best figs in the world should NOT have any trouble borrowing them from thier friends. If I told any of my friends I was goin to the nationals they would offer to lend me thier collection:p (well at least the fig I wanted) Anyway my point is it is not as difficult as it is made out to be to get particular figs. A 200 point and sealed booster would be best in my opinion.
Does it say what kind of boosters? That would make a difference, in a big way.
If you're listening, WizKids, here's my input. I have been on the fence about nationals. It's a big expense for me, but I'm a big MK fan, so I'm willing to take it. If, that is, I have a shot at winning.
If it's sealed booster for the top 8, not even sealed booster *draft,* it's simply not right. I am not dishing out the kind of money it would take to get me to Origins so I can pull crummy figs like I did for the Sinister sealed and get hosed. At least for Minions the WL played it draft style, so when everyone else at the table got uniques (there were only 4 of us) including an AD, I got the run-off, and could manage a formation. Guess what? I beat the AD with little stuff *because it was a draft.* If you wanna read about the battle, go here:
So, hear me, WK, I'm not dishing out $700+ to fly across the US and open boosters, getting eliminated in the first round because I pulled feces. I understand that last year was a fiasco we don't wanna repeat - I was there, I don't wanna repeat it either. Sealed booster to narrow the field to 8 is *not the answer.* *Maybe* sealed booster *draft* but not regular sealed booster.
