i voted other. really like the idea of doing more damage for ranged attackers and one for melee. the whole idea of ignoring toughness etc. is good as well. exactly how much damage it should do i am not sure yet, but i dont think it could do much worse than what it is.
im thinking one damage is delt before the attack is resolved, and it has pierce, going through toughness and invulnerability. Only magic immunity should stop it.
I voted for the "half damage rounded down to one" selection. But after reading some posts I wished I had voted "Other", I got an idea on what MR could be. Instead of doing one click or whatever is most likely to win the poll, how about the attack is retaliated more like a mirror image of the attack that was received. For example:
A Demi-Magus Magic Blasts a Shyft Bond Maker and scores a hit. The Bond Maker can now retaliate with a Magic Blast of it's own at the Magus. Because MR is a magic ability whose to say that the magic can't duplicate the attack. Now say the Bond Maker is healed and it is now going up against a Bladesmith Draconum using Weapon Master. The Drac.'s attack hits and, assuming the Bond Maker is still alive, the Bond Maker retaliates with a Weapon Master of it's own.
I realize this senario is not true to the world of MK (as it now stands) but, it would definitly make people take pause and consider whether they want to hit a figure with MR and it also allows for MR to miss or cause light damage or it may give the player that decisive kill. As most of us agree MR is too weak of a SA to be viable in tourny. play as it is and this just might level the playing field a little bit for the unwanted SA's.
As for the people who want to stick to old school I admire you wanting to not change anything but something HAS to be done. Can those of you who don't want it to change honestly say that when you are considering an army for a tourny. that you are actively seeking figures with MR. Or, if the figure has one SA you ARE looking for and MR as well, that MR is a slight bonus if that even. I am not knocking anybody here but we have to seriously consider what MR gets us now and what it could possibly do if it was changed in some way.

scrag- very nice. that would definatly make MR worth all the points it costs, and might even put the shyft back into the running. If you just hit one for strait up damage, would MR just do the same?
Maybe the shyft would make an attack back on the thing that damaged it, using its (the damaged shyft's) attack value. If it hits, damage is done based one however much damage was inflicted, and for WM and MB you roll the dice.
scrag, that sounds like a great idea, I like it best, but might be a little overpowered. Perhaps the a limit to the damage that can be "reflected" would be no more than what was inflicted on the MR figure in the first place, eg "reflected" damage from weapon master can not be higher than what was received - 1.
Eg. I hit a rivvenguard with my nightstalker and roll 4 damage. Rivvenguard rolls to hit me with its attack value after damage is taken and rolls to hit me. I roll a 6. Minus 1 = 5, but max damage will be 4, which is equal to what was received
Thank you Hexian and adlee! For normal attacks I liked what Hexian suggested (with a twist suggested by adlee), damage recieved is damage dealt minus 1 but not less then 1. Then for SA attacks what adlee suggested with damage rolled minus 1 not to exceed initial damage. Then for SA's like Ram, Venom it would only do 1 click. This way MR is not too powerful but it will make people think twice about attacking MR figures.
I like the idea of it dealing half of the damage delivered rounded to the minimum of 1. After all, the reason this ability is in play is for the enemy to think about the risk he/she will be taking if they attack a MR fig. If this interpretation of MR becomes legal, I forsee players trying to steer awqay from figs with this ability. Nobody will want to attack this fig with Magic Blast or Weapon Mastery if half of the damage will find its way back to the attacker, because these figs will recieve about 3 clicks of damage maximum, should they roll a 6. For mages with Magic Blast, it generally takes only 2 or 3 clicks of damage to disable that spell, and as for Weapon Masters, their attack may stay strong, but their defenses may be severly crippled.
With this interpretation of Magic Retaliation, we should see a renewed interest in some classic figs, such as the Rivvengaurd, Heart Seeker, and (my personal fave from the alpha dungeons) Thanatos Reaper. This newer version of MR might make the possibility of all Shyft armies more acceptable and playable.
Remember, with great magics come great risks. Be certain you know what you are facing before launching your assault. Above all else, fight for what is honorable, what isn right, and what is true. Those, afterall, are the markings of a true hero.
Other: When a figure with MR is succesful damaged by an attacking figure in a ranged or close-combat attack, 2 damage is assessed on the attacking figure immediately following the attack. MR does not affect attacking figures with MI. MR damage is reduced by Toughness and Invulnerability.
I believe that it should deal 1 damage to the attacker. And only MI can block it, because that is its job. It also shouldn't matter if the attack is melee or ranged. It should affect all equally. Also it should dothe 1 damage even if the attack missed. It presents a danger no matter what happens.
who brought this thread back from the dead? did someone whip out a new Faith Domain that read "if you roll a 6 during your command phase resurrect a poll about one old SA that has been removed from the game"??
