Remeber theres 3 types of domains, Weather, Terrain, and Catastrophy. Since Open Terrain only negates Terrain domains, Weather and Catastrophy domains will remain uneffected.
I'll pose the question as to whether multiple domains in a constructed army provide more or less variety in army design.
So if you have to choose between 2-4 different domains and then tailor your army to be effective within each domain, does that make your army more flexible or just less unique?
Or if we each tailored an army to a specific domain, and then rolled the dice to see if we lucked out in a given game and were able to use the exact tactic we devised or at worse case, something completely opposite? How would that effect tourny play? This would hardly be considered balanced.
I guess at this point is wait and see how the tourny rules are written. It's so interesting trying to read the minds of the game designers, trying to discern the "rock-paper-scissors" within the game mechanics.
Domains are required by tournament rules (apparently you need one for every match you would play). In that case I believe a number of venues will end up allowing Proxies so that people aren't limited to only a few domains, atleast until everyone has had a fair chance to trade/buy enough domains to make everyone happy.
Personally, I am happy with this, and I don't think it will be all that hard to get the domains you want since non of them are rarer then any others.
I'm sure I'll answer my own question after I play a few games with domains, but I'll ask it anyway. What will become more important in determining the outcome of a match 1) domain selection (both you and your opponent) or 2) army construction skills. I am assuming that strategy will always be important in game outcome, but I am also assuming that if you are consistently winning today you already skills in strategy.
From reading as much as I can up to this point I am getting the impression that domains will become a very significant factor in a match and outrank army construction as a dominant factor in winning. I believe that the thrust of army construction will evolve to the creation of swiss-knife type armies. It would be tactically challenging to create an all melee, or a flight domainate army, or ranged army, if 1) you need to play a different domain in each match, 2) your opponent has the opportunity to cancel your domain selection.
Therefore, you may have created a superior army, but a domain could reduce it to just OK. Therefore, is it possible that a few swiss army type armies may evolve as dominate armies in these days of multiple domains.
Just coureous (also from a personal standpoint I've always felt my army construction skills have been one of my strong suits .... I hope I can keep this as my edge).
