Friendly games are much better. When I lose to my friends, I try harder to come up with something to defeat them. If I lose a tournament, I don't bother because I know I'll see the exact same army next time. Takes all the fun out of being able to create different armies if you know what you're going to be up against.
I would have to say that competitive games are my favorite. Like Xan, I'm a competitive guy. Love going for the kill. However, as listed in my thread: Warrior Mind
I also like to use the competitive atmosphere to raise other players up to my level. :D
I think fun comes from shooting for the victory and fighting to the bitter end. If you aren't having fun while you're losing it's time to pack it in. Expolit the loss for what it is, a learning experience, and move on.

Dude, I got this awsome new tech for you. It is guarenteed to win every game for you if you have the skill to pull it off, so you can still consider it an ability you need to work for. Like I said, guarenteed to win? The new tech: Cheating.
If people could play in a competative environment in a friendly manner where fellowship actually means something then I'd prefer competative.
i.e. if its OBVIOUS someone intended to use / not use a power don't be a turdball and start spouting off about "he didn't call it".
If someone moves into range and you see them measure it, DON'T claim its out of range a turn later after both players have picked up and put down the pieces to give clicks, look at the dial, etc. ASK THEN "is it your intention to be in range? ok, looks good, we're in range"
All of the little "uncommon courtesies" I expect friendly players to use.
None of the "hahaha you forgot to say the magic words and even though I KNOW you meant this I am going to use some stupid technicality to try to screw you up the bunghole !!!"
That BS has simply got to stop.
I stopped playing MWDA because that wasn't happening and then heroclix for the same reason.
Fortunately MK hasn't become so competative in our area yet yet that people forget to be friendly.

It has been like that at the major tournys.

I've seen it happen! Absolutely despise folks who can't win by skill and choose to be rules laywers instead. I will ask the opposing player before he rolls the dice. "You are using impale aren't you?" I mean WHO WOULDN'T? It's just cruel and unneccessary to punish someone for it. Now, I would remind them they're supposed to call it and get them in the habit, but no need to be a punk. Great point snow.

But obviously, that kind of BS at tournaments still happens very often at my venue. In fact, I lost much of my interest in competitive games due to such BSs.
I can get very competitive when I play and I enjoy the challenge brought on by tournament play.
I have a lot of venues I can go to in my area (within .5-1hour away). I base where I go on if the warlord is running things right and how much fun it is to play there.
Playing fun games does open up a lot of options to play figures I normally wouldnt in a serious build. I used 7 High elven warriors and some cloud warriors in a 500pt single faction battle against my friend that just started in the game.
both formats have their advantages and disadvantages, but as long as you're enjoying the game who cares which you play in?
Definitely prefer competitive; forces me to always bring my 'A' game. The competition is reward enough in itself (and the way my win/loss record stands, it HAS to be. :D But I can't stand a competitive environment where th prize is the ONLY goal (see my thread here...) .

i'm usually a fun player, compatition is great and i enjoy it but, the group i play with enjoys the game for what it is, yes i will rules lawyer sometimes to prove that the insane move i just did is legal, but i also point out things if my opponent appears to have forgotten an ability or profiency that could help them.
all in all, friendly is great, but compatition is good also...
