I also never found ram gun that great outside conquest . In conquest it was crazy - the price of technos dropped to nothing the day they changed the ML ruling. :)
I always hoped they would have done away with the easy break for bounders. It would have made the big bound single base figures a little more managable (AM drac and Corphy). The mounted bounders never caused me any grief - the decent ones had crazy prices.
As far as the Am drac being super powerful - I don't think it was a magic figure that could win a newbie a tournament. It was like a lot of big figures from previous releases - a big fatty that was really easy to play. It was super forgiving to a new player - 50% of the time when you screwed up you got away with it.
At the time the talk of town was someone winning the Canadian championship with a chariot. Don't recall a lot of AM drac talk locally.
RamLev was never a big a deal as the Amazon Drac was. Like others have said, it was pretty action intensive. If you just pressed it, you could take care of the main advantage pretty quickly. Also, it was easy to counter. Nothing was more humiliating than Wood Golems spelling your demise.
And honestly, it wasn't the Amazon Drac that was the problem. It was big bound in general.
The challenge was that it was rammable and it's LOS could be blocked. Today I rarely see it play.
Actually, I think the biggest change was the ramp up in power with the introduction of the Stonethrower. When that came out .... wow. I think the Amdrac was partially introduced to deal with the Stonethrower.
Anyway, I think the Amdrac was an issue because it was powerful, but eventually people found ways to beat it. I don't think it was a trigger that lead to a downfall in play. At the venue where I play things were still pretty solid until the introduction of 2.0. That had a more significant role in changing the dynamics around this area than the Amdrac ever did.
Originally posted by Kikommander We often hear that AmaDrac killed 1.0 This is often something of a final argument.
Thus I wonder how many major tournaments (nationals, worlds, huge tournaments with recognized top players) where won by AmaDrac armies.
Please don't start flame wars, I would really like to know, if AmaDrac was THAT good or simply a bit overestimated.
Nope!
No one figure killed Mage Knight 1.0 as you refer to it.
There were so many good ideas being considered as we designed each set that decided to hang on to.
Now as the timing of when 2.0 came out, I don't have a solid answer that I can give you. :)
I don't think it was the AD, being too powerful, per se, but rather peoiple getting sick of HAVING to counter it game after game after game. Or HAVING to accuire the counter.
WK need sto be careful not to go down this road again with 2.0.
