I used to use a tacklebox but my collection just outgrew it by leaps and bounds.
I actually have all mine in USPS Priority mail boxes but any heavy duty shipping box will work. you can find boxes lying around your house. I don't have a venue to play tournaments around here so this is a really practical solution for me.
If I played tournies, I'd use a tackle box again. Being able to shut/lock it up is a nice touch and the lure tray on the top makes an excellent holder for dice, tokens, wings, and other essential things.
for vast amounts of storage, i get the huge rubbermaid boxes and put the figures in ziplock bags divided by faction or usefulness (like sorcerers, mounts, riders)...they are just dumped into the rubbermaid and thrown in the garage with my other junk...i go in there pretty often so keep the box accessible...
At GenCon SoCal I bought two of the Mage Cage things. They work fine, but after repeated use, I'd worry about rubbing off the markings on the tops of the bases. I basically wasted $20...
Well, I had to reply to this, sorry. The ribs in the Mage Cage that hold pieces in place are designed in a way that forces them to spread apart from the surface of the base of each piece. The grip they attain is from pinching only the corner of the base. We have inserted the same piece hundreds of times without ever showing any sign of damage caused by the ribs to the surface of any piece. You will experience more damage and fading by handling the pieces or clumping them in a shoe box or tight fitting compartment of a tackle box where othe pieces can scratch the fig then you will in the Mage Cage.
Also what tackle box allows you to display your figures, or have quicker access to thousands of pieces. Yes they do cost a bit more but we kept the price down as low as we could.
I really like for bulk storage the Sterilite Showoffs- they're stackable, portable, and the lock holds really well. I have a large one that I've used since Rebellion. Over the years, it's evolved in it's use.
First, it stored EVERYTHING. No organization internally.
Then it stored everything, with each faction in a plastic ziplock bag.
Then it stored just mage spawn.
Now it holds just titans and multi-dials. To give you an idea of how much it stores, I have all four dragons, two of each of the siege weapons, and all the titans except the griffen.
As I also said, they're very versatile. My wife and I have two small ones that we use for our 3D dungeons (three base sets, two floor tile sets, two traps sets). I have one medium one that I currently stash my Mage Spawn in, seperated out by point values in plastic bags. I also have another medium-sized one I stash all my paints and such in.
Another great feature is they're stackable in like sizes.
For my nons I had used shoeboxe-sized plastic bins. These are also very stackable. Now, however, they're all in plastic bags all stashed in a big box.
My uniques I also use the tackle-box approach with. Generally, my tackleboxes tend to be about 2" deep, and are able to connect to another to yeild double-sided tackle boxes I can seperate as needed. That, and it lets me paruse all my uniques at a glance.
for large storage, i got the 30 gallon Rubbermaid storage containers (usually on sale during the x'mas season) and separate each faction into a ziplock bag...riders in ziplock sandwich bags separated from the mounts in their own ziplock bag...i guess ziplock is the "organization" side of my storage...
For carrying figures to the local venue I use some flip-open carrying cases I got from Big Lots (or Odd Lots depending on where you live) that have dividers in them. The one I got was $15, but there are some cheaper ones there for around $5. In the case of storing everything else * cough* 1.0 retirement home *cough* I use a big cardboard box and put the figs in faction specific Zip-Lok bags.
Me I use 2 Plano Tackle boxes one for MK and the other for MW. The rest of my stuff is divided into Rubbermade containers and old Gencon bags. Or course I have my first box I got it from big lots for 4.95
I would tell you the brand but It is covered in paint and stickers.
