mageknight is nowhere near as complicated as warhammer (at least at the moment) it has a long way to go before it gets there to,
I agree with sigma, champions and adventureing companies are not nearly as complicated as spells and cavalry. Its actually one of the simplar mechanics they've introduced.
if the champions are hard to put together that could be a problem but it wont complicate the rules, but I cant make an accurate judgement until I get a champion myself.
For storage, there are plastic sheets like the ones to hold 9 trading cards designed for coins. There are the same but hold 20 coins. They would be perfect for consulting while building your army and you would not manipulate them as much.
You can put 4 champions per page, each with one column. There is 20 champions, you need 5 pages. Cheap.
You guys are right that it doesn't complicate the game rules in a highly significant manner.
Like I said before it may not even be a point if Katalkus is just an early version and not the final.
For people like me who keep everything clearly organized and stored in nice containers the storage issue is minor. However for all the kids I have ever warlorded for this is going to be even worse than the bombardment tokens; most of my players ended up relying on me to bring them all for their use. These little flimsy pieces of paper are going to be lost en masse.
As for the actual mechanics of the dials:
-Dial comes off of base easily
-Paper comes out of dial with difficulty
-There is only enough room for a single paper (well maybe 2 if you cram them) in the clear dial.
yeah I see your point, and (like some one else said) hopefully they will have the dial papers on the WK website like they do the bombard tokens (didnt think anyone used bombard).
However, it should be the kids, how old do you mean when u say kids, responsibility to keep track of there stuff so it does not get lost. They can just keep em in a ziplock bag or something like that, even if the dial papers get mixed up all they have to do is find the one that matches the fig they want to use.
I could understand it being difficult for some kids, the younger the more difficult, but if a parent is with them or an older sibling, then they could help the kids keep track of there stuff.
one solution could be to (if you make your army ahead of time) just bring the one dial slip that you want to use for that day and leave the rest in a container of some kind at home.
try this...use those cheap office depot packaging tape...lat it flat - sticky side up...place your dials on it flat...then, place another tape on top...sandwiching the dials...the cheap tape is so thin you can use your fingernails to cut it...i do the same trick on my terrain...pretty much a poor man's laminate...

My suggestion?
Depending on whether you are a competitive player or a funsy player you might consider simply using the champion "dials" from otherwise worthless figures from your collection.
Based on WK's previous products, I find it highly unlikely that every champion you pull will be worthy of even casual play. The same goes for individual "levels" of each champion.
How often did people truly play Astrus at 5th level? How often did people actually play that Troll Gunner hero?
So simply swipe the clear dials from the crappy champions or your duplicate figures to trick out the one or two champions that you will actually play with any frequency.
Sorry to hear about your difficulties. I doubt you received a preproduction figure, because I recall there was talk about preproduction Dark Riders figures with the errors in the dials, but it turned out that the released figures had the same errors.

yeah, but what would you do with the other 20 dials?
-Make Leis
-use them to bring sparkle to a costume malfunction
-put them under podo's dial and hope noone notices
-put them on the sides of the soles of your shoes and pretend you're wearing roller skates
i honestly don't see what the big deal here is. My Katalkus's dials aren't flimsy paper. It's almost plastic. The dials themselves come off real easy off the base. I can see the issue of kids losing the dials, but as far as my storing it, I have no problem with that. I brought my Katalkus into my venue and showed all the kids that played there and they thought it was the coolest thing ever. They can't wait to get a hold of their own champions. I feel we should all wait until the set is released before we pass judgement and condemn a mechanic before anyone really has had a chance to check it out.

Well that the whole plastic comment is a bit of a stretch, they are thin paper with a thin coating, far less sturdy than the styrene cards or even the bombardment tokens.
As far as the ease of removal I was just describing my experience.
As for the under 14 crowd, all of the kids I have had at my venues would lose a good portion of the dials, just like they did with the larger (and less abundant) bombardment tokens.
Like I said maybe I just happened to get a defective piece and a portion of my worries are unfounded. I want Wizkids to succeed, if I didn't I wouldn't be here writing about their products.
Just for a reference:
Adventuring Companies = Cool
Apocalypse Dragon = Hella Cool
Champions = Cool, but not implemented in the best way possible.
I'm not saying the dials are made of plastic. I'm saying that it certainly didn't feel like flimsy paper. That was my concern as well, but when I got my Katalkus and started playing around with the dial, I was pleased, but I will reserve judgement until I get my hands on more of the Champions. I am not going to condemn a mechanic to failure before I really get to see more of the product.
I think the biggest concern is the kids, and as much as good old Faldy here loves the kids and tries to help them succeed, it really isn't my concern. I'll give them a flight cup with plastic wrap to seal off the mouth so they can put their dials. Or just get them one of those little action token pouches, but again, not a real big concern.
