though it doesnt explain magic directly, i think another reason is the tv-pressure if u look at pokemon or yugi. it is not the ad-pressure (commercials), but the tv-series they made. it creates(d) some kind of hype. my 8 year old son is playing and dealing pokemon and yugi in school (though they play some kind of houserules) with many others.
its the door to CCG like magic.
and i think its some kind of easier switching between systems while growing up. CMG has a more long-term-approach.
btw, did u have the feeling, that the announced "splitting" in target-groups by WK did work? Remember they tried to split ages from creepy-freeks up to MK as the "highest-one".
In addition to all the reason posted above, I believe the CMGs are less popular because they fail to attract the entire miniature gamer market. What I mean by this is that, from previous posts, its obvious that there are people who prefer the 3-D figure games over just one dimensional cards. The market for those people is a lot wider that those who play CMGs. Many of those miniature gamers enjoy the painting, modelling and customizing of their miniature armies that CMGs fail to offer.
Let's look at some succesful miniature game companies, Privateer Press with Warmachine and GamesWorkshop. Both appeal to the miniature gamer by allowing him/her to customise their armies through the paint schemes, modelling, and conversions. These aspects are definately part of the fun of the miniature game hobby. Gamesworkshop holds numerous GamesDay events and these are always packed with players proud of their fully painted armies they assembled and painted themselves.

How about:
It was the first of its kind, well designed and tested and relatively cheap, while easy to learn as well. It gained a HUGE player base and now it benefits from 'player-to-player' advertising. Also, it is sold in easy-acces stores. For MK, we have to go to special places (over here anyway) while MTG is sold in any toy store.
