Hmm.. that would make more sense. Kellan's vest isn't like, say, the sec guard's armor in the 3rd wave -- she shouldn't be able to block the really big stuff.
That also seems a lot less complex than how many hits the armor can absorb (extra math or counters = bad in WK's eyes), or even than representing a specific dice... After all, if it blocks up to a 6, then it'll block d6, and any roll lower.. plus, using numbers balks in their system of using dice shapes, which seems to be their standard.
if i remember correctly, doesn't the medkit add a white shield? if so, that pretty much tanks all these theories as white dice aren't used to attack. unless its something they change before the medkit actually goes into production or etc.
they finally have the advanced rules out and they say what the number means.
Quote from page 5 of the advanced rules:
"Gear Shields:
Gear shields come from gear, and each has a number printed on it. Gear shields can block a die only if the number rolled on the die is less than the number on the shield. For example, a yellow-6 gear shield protects its figure from damage inflicted using yellow die that rolled 1-5, but not damage from another die or a yellow die roll of 6."
So there it is. The final answer. Let the debate begin on if you like it or not....
