Actually, not a problem... because the rules also do not state that the island the first player chooses cannot be the same as the second player's.
"Oh, you're gonna be a jerk and make my island the one five feet away? Alright... *Your* island is the *same* island. Whaddaya think of that, jerko? Now, you gonna play nice and put that island closer?"
No, it's not a major flaw... it *IS* a nit-pick. That's why players should play on a defined area and "play nice"... see, that's where the term comes from. If you don't play nice, nobody wants to play with you... and you take your ships and go home a loser... and next time you come to the venue, people ignore you and talk behind your back. That's not a good thing. SPORTSMANSHIP folks... that's what i'm talking about.
Now then, if you know you're gonna play against one of those cretins who puts the last island at the end of the table... hey... start it off: make all the islands sparced across the table... or like I said, make your home island theirs as well. And if you win... you get all the gold "on your home island" which also happens to be theirs.
These are clearly "jerk" moves, and should not be played. Let's all try to get along and not be rules lawyers and "jerk players", folks...
Sincerely, arrrr...

Does that mean that whoever loses, loses all the gold? Seeings how both players will have the same home island??
Heh-heh. Even better, ops32, you have one pirate player, and one national player. Objectives: Pirate must bring in over half the the total gold to his home island before the national player sinks over half his point total in ships. Or if you have a map nut in the group, have him lay out the actual islands in say, the Lesser Antilles, and have a real Carribean fight.
I am planning on trying to run a campaign game at some point. But I will supply the ships and treasure. I am gonna see if I can map out the Caribbean (or parts of it) and add a feel of realism to the game. I am definately going to add the ability to raid ports, and I will be adding the element of "(un)friendly" ports as well (giving bonuses if friendly and penalties (like losing crew to Jack Ketch a.k.a the hangman!) if the port is unfriendly). Might add some other sea cratures and other oceanic fable to the mix as well...mmmm Bermuda Triangle. *grin*
But most definately will need a map...so Pirates can bury treasure and the English can build ports and the Spanish can build strongholds. Might even allow people to declare other nationalities for their fleets, such as the French, Dutch and the Portuguese.
While not specifically forbidden, I can see a number of potential difficulties in allowing players to be based on the same island, though in response to BountyHunter01's querry, I would think that you would still keep the gold that you haad brought back to "your half" of the island.
I don't believe you can assign a second player to an island already designated as another players home island considering that a player may not dock their ships on another players home island.
I wouldn't necessarily call assigning a player to a far off island a loophole as much as it would be good strategy. That being said, both players need to consider this point when placing islands and try not leave one (or two) islands too far away and remote from the others. Obviously the larger the playing area the higher chance that a remote island could end up your home island. Also, the larger the playing area the longer the game is likely to take, therefore in sanctioned tournaments where time is usually a concern, a reasonable sized playing area is much more likely to be made standard.
Docking. Home island. Good point. I forgot about that...however, because I feel Satan channelling through me, I will play devil's advocate (:<
The rules don't state that you can't assign two players the same home island, BUT assume for a moment you can. The game is REAL quick, because it becomes a "sink-the-other-guy-first" scenario. Woeful is the Commander who intended to grab'n'go only.
*shakes the devil out* Ew. Why does he lick everything when using my person? Anyway, right...can't dock at your opponent's home island...can't have the same island as a home island. Good call Tek34!
