Shame on ALL of you who say that Winnick is using AIDS as a gimmick for sales.
Little known fact about Judd, is that he used to be a member of "The Real World: San Francisco", where he happened to become good friends with another member, Pedro Zemora.
Not too long after the show had been airing, Judd's good friend and AIDS activist, Pedro, took ill from AIDS complications. Pedro was to begin a lecture tour in September. Judd agreed to step in and speak on his behalf until he was well enough to do so again. In August of 1994, Pedro checked into a hospital and never recovered.
Pedro passed away on November 11, 1994. He was 22.
Judd continued to lecture about Pedro, Aids education and prevention and what it's like to live with some one who is living with AIDS for most of 1995. Speaking at over 70 schools across the country, Judd describes it as, "...the most fulfilling and difficult time in my life." But time and emotional constraints forced him to stop lecturing.
The graphic novel that Judd spent over two years toiling away on, helping him find a medium and a voice, is called "Pedro and Me". Stop saying that a man who has been touched so close by AIDS is using that experience to make sales. He is telling his story again, this time, to a new medium, and in a new way.
Flashback: I'm well aware of Judd's history, and I stand by what I said. The man has no writing talent and doesn't give a damn about DC's characters. As Clownprince23 mentioned, his one-trick-pony writing style has exposed him for the hack he is.
Nuadha: Yes those number would be impressive today, but they're not really impressive within the context of when those series were made. As it stands now, both of their current runs are on the verge of cancellation.
i have enjoyed winnick's work on the outsider's. it is nothing outstanding and does not rank with some of the classics, but it is a fun and enjoyable team book.
as for the whole aids thing, i do feel it is not working in the context that winnick wanted it to.
if it was soppused to create more awareness and to show the even people with aids can do something and make a difference, it did not seem that way to me.
to me, it just feels out of sync with the rest of the DCU, giving a character a sickness or ailment or weakness is a good and proven way to portray the character as human and and to place that character in dramatic situation's.
but by giving it a real world deasese, it feels so "common"- for lack of a better term, when it is put beside things like superhumans, space and time travel and other fantastical elements.
instead of drawing me into the world and abosrbing me into the story, it pushes me away, and makes me realize the absurtity of it all.
cyke- if your not liking and or stop reading Green Arrow I'm sorry your missing out on the New Adventures of Mr. Brick- He's out to prove the city just isnt big enough for 4 archers -whoops might have to make that 3 -ha ha ha
HOPEFULLY your also picking up Teen Titans as it address' more on Mia (maybe Judd decided some of the story would be better told with people Mia's own age?) Mia wonders how much Ollie told Cyborg about her "situation". AND when she realizes Dr. Light intends to up the stakes and kill titans she stuck craming her life story into 1 sentence before Dr. Light opens fire- "Look if I get hurt don't help me"- if you dont see an arc where Mia gets sliced open and a titan is covered with her blood and she has to deal with the fact her "secret" hurt someone THEN your just not looking for new storylines. Getting into adventures with Ollie in Green Arrow and he knows all about her is 1 thing BUT when your in The Teen Titans comic playing super hero and not telling your fellow mates what they need to know- sparks are sure to fly and the fans will definitely be there to watch.
Side note: anyone catch the time travel arc in the Titans where its quite obvious Mia was a Titan but she sure isnt an active 1 now? I say if Mia is going to die it will be in the Titans book when Lex/Ares make their move and turn Superboy/Wonder Girl evil and they start killing Titans BUT thats just my guess
About Hal, he brought back Ollie when he was Parallax. As the Spectre, he has no such free will.
About superheroes overthrowing tyrants and such, there's a small JLA trade called 'Superpower' which tells the story of a young hero who wanted to overthrow one such dictator. Although it doesn't go indepth on that subject, the character analysis of the young hero makes it a good read.

You are geniuses on your worlds, but still you do not see it is simple math. You believe that Two cannot be One, and One cannot possibly be more than that.
You Stark, with all you could build, with all you could do, hid behind a mask. Hid behind a desk. Hid behind a bottle. Hid behind petty ambition.
And you, Pym. Your discovery of the "Pym Particle" could have cured the mutations on Earth. Your discovery could have isolatedthe Celestial Seed and shrunk it to nothingness. The same goes for cancer, Hank. For almost all viral diseases."
Mar-Vell then speaks to Black Bolt who asks him -- "What Are you doing to the others?"
Marvel tells him -- "Only showing them what they might have been. They see so easily the good they did, but not the good they might have done. Their evil is missed Opportunity. To be what the must be, they must feel the pain of discovered regret. They must taste and feed upon the good they might have done but did not."
Wow, other than the pym particle comic book logic, that was just a load of philosophical BS. Sorry but I don't agree with the promotion of living in regret. Just learn from it.

Alright, let me set something straight: if I had to choose one comic to keep on buying, it would've been Green Arrow. From Issues 15-30 something, it would've been Green Arrow. Then Mia got AIDS, and GA is NOT the right place for that. You know why? You know how GA handles stuff like that? HE IGNORES IT! It doesn't exactly make for the best reading experience.
Don't get me wrong, I still love GA, and Winnick's writing on him is awesome. But the AIDS storyline seemed, to me at least, unneccessary. I didn't like it, and it DOES seem just like a stunt. Plus, it was right in the middle of one of my favorite storylines with one of my favorite characters, Brick. There is one issue with an Ollie on Brick fight scene, GA readers know what I'm talking about, where before and after the fight scene has to do with AIDS. That's one of my favorite Ollie fight scenes of all time, just behind the Solomon Grundy fight scene from Archer's Quest, which is just behind the Deathstroke fight scene from IC#3. You know what? I HATED that issue, because it was diluted with, instead of interesting dialogue, Ollie NOT dealing with AIDS. Don't get me wrong, that is COMPLETELY CORRECT character analysis there, but it's a waste of space! They've spent more time saying that Ollie doesn't deal than they EVER can saying that he DOES deal with #### like this!
Seriously, I hope they DO cure Mia with some supernatural method. Handing out miracles to random unknowns is completely different from doing a favor from one of your fellow members in the league by curing his sidekick. There is someone out there who can do this, guaranteed, and you know what would be REALLY cool? If Ollie made a deal with Ra's and took Mia to the laz pits. That would make my ####ing millenium. But I don't think Winnick will handle the situation that way, in part because he introduced the AIDS in the middle of another storyline (what a douche), and in part because I don't think Winnick is willing to be that "unreal" about AIDS and suspend REALITY long enough for FANTASY (how often is it that a nerd has to say that).
It seems as though he uses the comics he writes to push forward certain issues that are important to him. I understand the point he's trying to make, and I'm getting tired of having to read about it over and over again. First there was the gay kid that got beat up in Green Lantern and now there's Mia with HIV.
And if it's not that, his stories have an excessive amount of sexuality of some kind. There's Arsenal sleeping with one of the new members in the Outsiders and then later on with Huntress. There was the sexual tension between Nightwing and Huntress, which is somewhat understandable, but he dealt with it wrong. Having Arsenal telling them to stop yelling at each other and to just get it on seemed totaly inappropriate. Then there's Indigo and Shift, who have feelings for each other. This one's not as bad as both seemed to come across as very shy, but it seems the only way he can think of having character development is for them to get involved in relationships or through sex. There was a problem one time here at the store when a child came into possession of one of the issues that contained an orgy scene as part of a demonic ritual.
Outsiders does have its moments though. When Nightwing and Arsenal seem to just pick at each other, hinting at the old days. I like that type of interaction. The recent issue with Batman and Deathstroke was a great read.
When it comes to Batman though, he's doing a great job. He seems to be staying away from anything controversial and just telling a story. I can only assume that with Batman he's on a tighter leash.
I know all about Him and Pedro, and I applaud all the work he has done. But I also think that the comics he writes shouldn't be used as a medium to voice his views.
well outsiders was intended for a more mature audeince, in the first graphic novel, looking for touble, the introduction mentions how he was allowed to up the violence and sex, making it darker and grittier, making the team a group hunters, not firemen.
i consider the outsiders, DC equivialnt to X-force, only much much better. no matter how much of a hack you may think winnick is, he is ten times better than leifield.
god i hate leifield!
but i think the sex is fine for the book, i mean when you have a bunch of 20 something year old living together, and most of them have the bodies of supermodels and greek gods, things happen, just like college, only with less rouffies.
