From 10k Seattle, Round 6 vs Paul Sotasanti (top 8 at pc la)
Both playing FFun. His iniative, life totals are 16/32 his lead.
He attacks his she-thing into my wyatt wingfoot and burns me with his guys sending me down to -16. He smiles and asks me if I can do 48 damage thinking I'm going to scoop. I've already played child named valeria for the turn.
I attack his franklin richards with thing, sending him to bottom of deck, ready thing.
Send thing into his wyatt-wingfoot, he reinforces with frankie raye.
I send ant-man at his frankie raye, he goes down to 25.
I attack his thing with my she-thing, KO'ing his fantasticar bringing him down to 18.
My invisible woman into his mr. fantastic (2), bringing him down to 12.
My mr. fantastic (5) into his she-thing, bringing him down to 8.
I play comic radiation to burn him with 3 flame throwers and 1 advanced hardware, bringing him down to -10.
Cosmic radiation #2 to get him down to -13.
Cosmic radiation #3 to get him down to -16.
Using thing's gametext to throw my war wagon at his invisible woman to bring him down to -17.
The game lasted 45 minutes after time and we were only on turn 6. Had the endurance totals been the same, we would have gone on to turn 7.
We both needed the win to make top 8 and Paul ended up dropping after the game.
At the PCQ this past weekend, I was playing in the sealed event. It was turn 7, and I don't exactly remember how I got there, but my opponent had me at -7, and he was at -1. I had Ganthet unstunned after he killed all my other characters. He say's "Well, you did a good job, but...", and thinks he won. But because of Ganthet's ability, I went to -1 at the start of the recovery phase, pushing it to the next turn, when I had iniative and won. Just shows to go you the little blue guys are tougher than they look.
I have a couple great stories of strange losses/scoops. Two of which came at the hands of the most feared character in the game, Roy Harper <> Speedy (yes, I said feared).
1. One was at a local PCQ. I was playing Teen Titans and won the die roll, and I had no idea what my opponent was playing. I set my resource for turn one, and recruit Roy Harper <> Speedy. My opponent scoops.... in his resource step.... of TURN ONE. It turns out that he was playing Cosmic Cops [this was back when it was big] and Speedy was pretty much auto-loss for him.
2. I'm playing against X-Stall with Titans at the PCQ in Colombus after the 10k. Basically what happens is I draw pretty crappy, and he starts flipping every location he has. I manage to luck sack into 2 Ka-Boom!'s by turn 5 and get him into a veritable Ka-Boom! lock. We end up making it turn 7 resources on turn 12 and he has Mimic, Emma Frost, Professor X (5), and Rogue to my Garth, Terra, Hank/Dove, Roy (3), and Connor Kent. It's his initiative and he declares his attacks and ends up stunning my entire board except Garth, flips 2 X-Corps, and the endurance totals are me at -1 and him at 5. I have one card in my hand. I attack Garth into Rogue, and use Titans Tower, dropping the one card I have in my hand... Speedy. I knock him down to -2. He cries. Alright so he didn't really cry, but it makes the story sound better.
3. I was playing my friend with Evil Medical School against his Titans. It basically comes down to turn 8 on his initiative and all I have it Doom (8) [he got Speedy on turn one and my draw was terrible all game] to his Garth, Red Star, Terra, Hank/Dove, Roy, Tim. I had used one Paralysis on his Red Star and a Robot Sentry on his Hank Hall, then I KOed the Sentry to put a counter on Doom via Devil's Due, and another counter on him came from a Shimmer and GCPD I had from the previous turn. If he stuns my Doom I lose, if he doesn't I boost Dr. Light next turn and win. We both know it so he goes all out and sends Garth[9atk], Dove[2atk], Tim[2atk], Roy[4atk... he forgot to pump, bad player], and Terra[6atk] into Doom[22def]. That's 23 ATK to my 22 DEF. He has nothing to play, an all face-up row and no card in hand. I had a face up row, and the following cards in hand: Dr. Light, Doom(4), Have A Blast!, GCPD. So I power up my Doom from hand, and hope to God as I play a Have A Blast! on a redundant team-up (I had four of them up since two were Millenium's I played them for the card draw). What do I get in my row? An Underworld Star, talk about luck huh? I mean all I needed was one more power up to win, and now I can search it out. Well.... turns out I was out of Doom's in my deck and I lose.... what's that called again? Ohhh yeah, unlucky :(
i was playing FF equips (not burn) at a recent pcq, i was playing against curve sentinel (which is what i built the equip deck to beat, and it does a good job at it) turn seven he stuns my whole board on his init, with mags unstunned so i lose every one, and im at 1 to his 35. turn 8 is surfer and some unstable molecules, we go to turn 9 me 1 him 20 something, i drop a thing and a personal forcefield, steal the init and beat up on him again, now we are 1 to like 9, next turn i drop mr fantastic 7 and finish him 1 to -5, i play alot of acro dodges those last couple turns, the best part is on turn 3 that game he had stunned my thing (only character i had droped so far) and tryed to hounds him, and we he chose not to do breakthrough and instead targeted thing to ko i chained yancy street, he didnt even know what the card did but i had put it in to stop hounds lock, if he had just done break through instead or he had actually ko'd thing he would have won.
The funniest way I have ever gone another turn was when I was playing TNB with my TT, it was turn 7 have no idea how we got that far, I dropped Roy Harper speedy and Connor Kent, he was at 25 and I was at 6, my intiative, I exhaust every character I control give connor like +10 def, I had 4 press the attack ready in my hand and had not payed 3 with garth yet, I attacked his magneto, he reinforced and took 5, I press the attack on connor and after all was said and done i leave him at -43 KOing 3 of my resources and using TItans tower and tamaran alot and paying 3 with garth for beatdown back., he then did a last shot and burned me for a lot with 3 surprise attacks and 3 mutant menace, but it wasn't enough and I won, Connor Kent Pwns.
i'm pretty sure this is the best one even though it didn't happen to me
opponents initiative, he plays mephisto huge guy removing 3 cards from the ko'd pile with exactly enough creatures to kill for his combat phase effect
during the guy's recruit he recruits mad hatter with boost to steal one of the characters and at the start of the combat phase mephisto ko's himself and all of the other characters on the guy's field
i saw this on an online game...man it was hilarious..how many people can say they won a game because of mad hatter..
One of my favorite victories was back around the time of Marvel Knights.
I was playing Teen Titans / Spider-Friends against a Sentinel player. It was a good ways into the game and he had an enourmous swarm of Wild Sentinels of Sentinel Mark Vs, and had been KOing my characters down to Mary Jane with Spider-Armor and someone else (although I had already teamed-up with Teen Titans).
It was my initiative, and when I drew into a Daily Bugle and Spider-Man, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, I knew I had him. I layed it as my resource, recruited Spider-Man (severely under-dropping, of course), and let him build. When combat came, I sent all 3 into a Wild Sentinel, flipping Daily Bugle naming Wild Sentinel. I stunned him, drew a card from Mary Jane, and used Daily Bugle to flip down a face-up Teen Titans Go! I then attacked another Wild Sentinel, stunned him, drew another card, turned TTG back face-down, played it, and did the whole thing over again ... and again.
When he was down to one Wild Sentinel, I sent in Mary Jane all by her lonesome. He tried to brick wall with Cover Fire, but I had drawn into a pump or two with the 7 or 8 cards I had drawn off Mary Jane. I stunned the last Wild Sentinel, and used the Daily Bugle to turn itself back face down. I then sent Spider-Man and my other character into one of his Mark Vs. Spider-Man prevented any stun-back while team-attacking, and I flipped Daily Bugle back face up, naming Sentinel Mark V.
I then wiped out all his Mark Vs the exact same way I handled the Wild Sentinels.
I think he ended up having to KO about 12 characters that turn after my 3 characters had finished with his board. I also had like 15 cards in hand.
That is one of the best ways to get people into the game. Great stories of spectacular victories! In fact, I would love a special section to these boards just for that topic. People could describe the best game they've had (or worst loss) and we could discuss it and dissect it. It's one way to keep the fun going past the actual match and get other people excited about the game.
You story had me recreate that scenario in my mind and it sounds like it was a lot of fun.
Me playing force vs. x-stall. This was way back in the day like pre sentinels back in the day. Its turn 10 his rogue and prof x have burned me to 1. I play my jean grey. He plays his jean grey. He uses her and then plays puppet master. We go to next turn. He plays jean and passes. I play jean use her and then kill him with my 3 drop wolverine and lost city. After the game the judge came over to me and told me that he had a puppet master in hand. He even played his puppet master and had the power up for the win. But didnt realize it. Talk about lucky.
I wouldn't call this the most sportsmanlike play ever, but it was a casual game.
I can't remember what I was up against, but I was running a Xstatic Villains deck, and it just wasn't working, so I have about 3 chars in play on turn 6. He overran my board, dropping me to -4, to his mid-teens endurance. With nothing left to do, and with him left with one attacker, I said:
"Well, looks like you've got me. Shall we move on to the recovery, and see if I can at least recover all of my characters?"
He agreed, and I entered the recovery phase by flipping Mutant of the Year to KO my two X-Statix chars, and then played Meltdown to get up to 2, and keep my highest drop character. He was none too peased, but my turn 7 was as unimpressive as the rest of my game, and I lost handily. Still, a sneaky way to slip by for another turn.
Other htan that, the worst play on my opponent's part was when I used Cosmic Necessity, while sitting at 0 during his last attack in the combat phase, exhausting my last character (reinforced), and he chose to let me gain 5, rather than draw 2 cards. Put me at 5, I took 4 from the stun, and made it through two more turns before a dead draw on 7.
At Hobby league a couple of weeks ago, my son was losing after all attacks in the later rounds by 2 endurance, with his 4 stunned characters and his Heralds of Galactus deck. Then came his Last Laugh, literally.
