This game is very fun casually, however when you start to get more competitive it begins to become a real headache. Probably because the game is so well balanced its hard to prepare for tournaments.
Imagine a field that is so diverse instead of preparing for one or two decks, you need to prepare for 5 or 6 decks that are pretty popular. Damn you Upperdeck for making such a well balanced game, it drives us nuts at night trying to prepare for tournaments.
Ultimately its best just to pick a team you like and run with it. If your a batman fan, build a gotham deck. If you like spiderman, build a spiderfriends deck. If your a Joker fan like me you can build Arkham Inmates, etc, etc. Theres only a couple teams that are really unplayable, (darkseid, syndicate, new gods, manhunter, masters of evil) avoid those and you should be able to start playing and winning easy enough.
I think that vs is one of the most enjoyable games to play . and the mechanics in the game are great and to build a good deck would probaly cost any wear from 50- over 150 bucks depending on which type of deck u build , also I played heroclix for the past year or so and i personaly think vs is a better game .
I have been playing VS for some time (since DC origins), and have found it an extremely fun game, mostly owing to the fact that it is well balanced so comes down to skill (both playing and deckbuilding) rather than just who can topdeck the most broken card.
After an investment of about $100 (new zealand) I had a very reasonable doom deck, which while not perfect allowed me to win quite a few games. As I have spent more money my deck has evolved quite a bit into its current build, an absoulutely evil combination of five teams that cleaned up at my hobby league except for a rather pesky deck I wasn't prepared for (a uber fast burn deck).
On the note of which sets to buy I recommend just picking a team you like and go with that to start with (I picked Doom), as all teams (except Skrulls/Negative Zone) have a reasonably good casual build.
Oh and gottr wants this game to be like yu-gi-oh only with superheroes so best to just ignore him.
Look is simple, the game is awesome, short in play and quick to learn even if it's difficult to master, unlike YGO or MTG where you have 50 dollar cards there is no such thing in VS System, you can build a pretty descent deck with around 40 dlls, just don't go searching for Savage Beatdown liek crazy cause even though it's a great card everyones going to asking you for like 10 rare cards that you most likely won't want to give up, all in all is a very good game, I started playing around 6 months ago and I like the way UDE manages to keep it fresh
I just bought every card for it except the Beatdowns. £15. Thats just over $30.
This game is onyl expensive if you go to the really high level. You can have fun and learn the game cheaply easily, and even be pretty damn competitive.
My New Botherhood deck cost me less than $20 initially, and although it is worth a lot more now due to Sabretooths and Genoshas, it was still a good deck before.
I'm thinking of getting back into the game too, at least a little bit (most likely will still focus on clix). What has changed since the Superman set? Is Marvel Knights worth getting? I think a MK deck would be kinda cool. What are tournaments like? I keep hearing about different formats.
Marvel Knights, Green Lantern and Avengers have greatly improved on Man of Steel, bring the power level up to around origins level.
Marvel Knight is definitely worth getting, at the moment there is a very aggressive concealed build that is at tournament level, though if you prefer stall it would be better to get Green Lantern.
Can't really comment on tournament due to living in NZ but believe curve sentinels is still dominating in USA although newer sets are having a good go at stopping that.
As for formats, there are Marvel/DC modern age-only uses cards from the last 2 sets from each company, Golden which uses all cards, and I believe sealed pack 10k tourneys are becoming more common.
yeah, there is a tourny locator at UDe's site, but i think it mainly shows PCQ's and other stuff. just call around and see what stores hold hobby leagues.
1) its a very solid game with very refreshing tactics (formation, flight, range, ect.), but some of the rulings can get a bit confusing (YES, you can use utility belt against evasion, it is a payment power. *evil laugh*)
2) its really up to you. it depends on how competetive you want to be. i play an Arkham/Thunderbolts deck that is relatively cheap. it wins games, but isnt top tier (mainly cuz' its inconsistent)
3) Why? MOR has GREAT cards, no mistake, but the new sets could give it a run for inz money.
I say this game is fun, but its an expensive game. At least for a student like me. It's hard to keep up with those adults capable to spend money like nobody's business. My country's currency is also smaller, so buying would means 'more money'.
