Slitty - Thank you for the prestigious honour of "The most idiotic post on VS realms". It'll be another thing to carve on my tombstone when I've finally had it with people who make pointless and non-contructive comments like that and throw myself in front of an ice cream van out of desperation, smearing myself across the windscreen like an insect, while a group of small children look on, thier mouths agape and thier lives changed forever.
Canamrock - More fair points. But you wrongly attributed that second quote to me. It was actually Stem.
I apologise, youre right about the resource thing, it just never comes up enough in casual play for me to worry about it, but hey, im a casual and sloppy player and so are my TCG playing friends.
My main point wasnt that players were insulting me by saying those phrases, it that its the same stuff ALL THE TIME. Perhaps its just my peers who arent creative enough to use different words each turn, or at least make an interesting comment or satirical remark once in a while. Most of the guys I play against have no personality. They don't even crack a smile when they win.
What do you want them to say? "Yes, I am hereby concluding my build phase and passing priority over to you."
Or;
"Comparing your attack value to my defense value, I believe the numbers are equal and my character will stun. Also, comparing my attack value to your character's defense value, I see that my attack value is greater by exactly 2 points, therefore your character stuns as well. Ergo, I conclude both of our characters gain the stunned characteristic and lose all text in their text boxes."
Or even;
"Okay, I will approve your declaration of an attack with Black Panther, T'Challa with a target defender of my Dane Whitman, Black Night as a legal attack. Black Panther gains the attacker characteristic, Dane Whitman gains the defender characteristic, Black Panther exhausts, and you retain priority."
I think stuff like "legal" and "pass" is a lot better than anything else people could be saying.
Sorry 'bout the misquote. I forgot to change the name when I C&P'd your name part of the first quote. (Yeah, I don't like typing... lol)
So the real problem is that your friends are boring then? That sucks, dude. See, when I play, win or lose, I'm always saying stupid things. I'm one of those people that describes what's happening on the board. Katar Hol bouncing an attack by an AGL, I'd said, "Damn, now Katar's angry... he swings into you directly for 9 for you ever thinking you can bring him down." Or playing Bumblebee in Titans (told you I was a scrub!), I'd make comments about her being a "strong black woman" as she swings or falls. That got a laugh the first time I said that. ^_^ We still bring that up today, even in things that nothing to do with VS.
As for the sloppy play thing, it's cool. For casual play, it's usually never a problem. The issue is that some decks, a lot of which my group and others in my area go into in a big way, do things all over the turn, and I've been forced to be the rules overlord at times. When you play crazy chain-intensive decks, this stuff becomes infinitely more important, and what sucks most is that newer players are often taught sloppy play in many areas, and that makes it a lot harder to reteach people things like the order of events in the recovery phase, and so on.
Oh, sorry, I was speaking BS. Maybe I shuld retype that in English. :p Sometimes pass is just pass because "done" or "your go now." are misunderstood, rules lawyer bait, blah blah blah. Don't take offense at the phrases of the game, man. I understand if you get pissed because someone is unwilling to converse during a game OUTSIDE of those terms, but by shutting down just because someone might say, "Mulligan,... Draw 2. Play my resource, recruit Joystick, pass." before saying anything else to you in the game just means you're acting rude yourself.
If I'm playing someone who isn't chatty in-game I'm not offended myself, but if someone wants to talk a little while we play I'm usually pretty game. I'm there to win true, but I'd rather win and have some fun too. So don't just assume all us "clones" are jerks. :)
-Mike (Proud Netdecker! Nyah! I'll play anything, baby! Whether I built it or not! Fight Deckism Now!)
Canamrock is an excellent contributor to these forums, and he said what I wanted to say in a far more eloquent (and probably nicer!) manner. Thanks canamrock!

I'm not wearing down, I am just giving them a different target. Like Ali's rope-a-dope. I float like a unicorn, and sting like a bee.
As for the original sentiments of this thread (congrats on your PCQ win dude, see you there) celebrity is inevitable in any human community. It is the nature of the public, especially when it comes to sports. Ever since we were hunting deer with our bare hands, the best people have stood above the rest... and they are celebrated. They also get to breed with the best women in the tribe. Go me.
(If you are serious about this topic, then you are gonna get red-hot boiling from my article that goes up at midnight tonight on Metagame. Whatever you do, promise you will still love me.)

Funnily enough, I'm the most rules concious person in my circle of friends, despite my fast and furious playing style (VS, you pervert).
It's true, and I'm one of the people who taught you how to play.
As for 'sloppy' play, in casual play I have nothing against sloppiness. Especially when it comes to teaching.
Allow me to explain, in the circle I play with, which Jaeger is a part of, I have nothing against ignoring the odd twist of the rules, a plot twist played at slightly the wrong time, a resource going down before mine or anything like that. Why? Because the people I'm playing with are my friends and I'm there to kill some time, have a laugh and see how certain fights pan out (take a game I had tonight, nothing was more enjoyable than seeing the Green Lanterns knock a force of Sentinels into next week.)
But 'Rules Nazis' drive me nuts. Many time before now Jaeger has pulled out a rule on me that is perfectly legal, and actively encourages me to wish I could rip him a new one (a certain incedent involving Songbird and Team Tactics come to mind... People cannot team up with themselves!) Still, I take the rules as they are when I'm playing a game, but when it comes to teaching rules it's a different story.
Recently my girlfriend (bless her, she tries) decided that she wanted to play and understand VS, since it's such a large part of my life. So, I picked up an X-Men starter for her, stuck in a few team-ups and got to work at teaching her. The same way I did Jaeger, and just about every other one of my friends that plays VS. My critical mistake was this... My girlfriend has no interest in Marvel or DC, and has never played a CCG or anything like it before. After three days of ranting about phases, card plays and recruit costs I was ready to hunt Jaeger down and deal with the Songbird issue all over again. But instead I took a new angle and used what would be considered a 'sloppy approach' to teaching. I stopped referring to things as this phase, that chain etc. The result isn't perfect, but she can now play quite well, has beat me on more than one occasion and enjoys playing a game, not being forced in line by the fuhrer of advanced rules. She's a little sloppy around the edges, but I figure it's easy to tidying up.
My point is, for those of us who don't have a place as celebrities, winning large amounts of money for using decks we didn't come up with, allow us our 'sloppy pride'. We play for fun, and enjoyment. When we finish an action we say thing's like 'on you go pal' and other simple terms. We know when an action is legal and we're pretty sure you do. Drop the formalities guys, we're geeks with bits of thick paper that we paid ridiculous amounts of money for, nothing more.
I glanced over this thread and this is what I summarize it as:
"Hi everyone. Professional players are gay because they don't play the way I do, which is sloppy/casual. However in a twist of retarded proportions professional players can't yell at me for being a casual player because in end.... the universe ultimately revolves around me."
Congrats! You just created a non-argument (aka: pointless egocentric #####ing). I love a good argument but you have to have a point to argue. Some pros are a-holes. Some scrubs are a-holes. Hate the a-holes if you're going to hate.... don't be the a-hole. Please realize that I am not trying to be abrasive here (although I'm really good at that) I'm just trying to point out that in no way is it fair to demoralize an entire group of people based on a few experiences that don't match your style.
P.S. Yes I realize that's a lotta a-hole's for one post. I apologize in advance to all....
Some people play for fun. Some people play for money.
Some people play for money, have fun while doing it, and can be a nice, welcoming, all-around great guy the whole time.
And these are the people we see all the time: Spears, Wiitanen, Vidi, Oldaker, Prosak, Stu-f'ing-barnes, etc. etc. Not only are they good at what they do, but they're NICE PEOPLE, completely unassholic, and people I would gladly have a beer with.
It's why we keep hearing from them. They're the best they are at what they do, and they smile the whole time, and make others around them smile while they do it. That is not only being a good gamer, it's being a good HUMAN F'ING BEING.
I find it very, very sad that your jealousy has turned into hatred for these beloved characters. What have they ever done to you other than take away the spotlight from your oh-so-deserving persona? It's egos like yours that bring down the mood and the game for the rest of us. I strongly suggest you enter the Magic Pro Tour, because that's the game all the Arrogant Jerkoffs play.
Get in the coffin. Get out of this community, because your existence is polluting it. You don't like it? Then get out. Get out, but more importantly, get in the coffin.
By the way, Dave that is the most dashing picture of any gamer I have ever seen. And they wonder why we call him Big Sexy. "Oily planetarium," indeed...
