And some people will say 'I love it' because they are trying only to encourage the person and acknowledge their effort rather than any comment on quality.
That works on my 4 year old, but I give most people more credit than that ;)

I read that.
You said it is infantile to improve by recieving simple encouragement and acknowlegement of effort.
I think you were saying that the only worthwhile feedback for an adult includes some sort of commentary on the merits of the work.
If that is what you were saying, I could not disagree more.
Yes, it's silly already. Stating your opinion is fine, I have no problem with that, but there is a point where supporting your opinion becomes whining. That's why I pretty much stopped participating in the forums this week because I feel that maybe I started to move into the whining stage. Like I tell my wife, if it's worth complaining about then it's worthing taking an action to correct the situation. In the situation of VS you either deal with the situation and move on, or discontinue playing. The game is what it is and there's nothing we can do about it. Enjoy it or find a new hobby that you will enjoy.
You know what this reminds me of? The new X-men movie.
If you followed the reaction on the message boards, starting way back when they switched directors, the third film was the worst thing to ever happen to a mutant. Especially after the damn thing came out.
It broke the records and had the best Friday box office in cinema history. Freaking Wolverine owns Hollywood and superheroes will rule the multiplex for the forseeable future.
But of course the movie still sucks on the message boards.
Simple applause helps a great deal, even when it is not followed by "insightful critique".
No one is saying that applause is wrong or bad. Just that applause might not be a solid indicator of areas to improve.
Isn't there an old adage that says something like you learn more from losing than winning?
Isn't it true because if you lose, you see an area that was exploited or a weakness, or something, and if you apply that knowledge, you get better. But if you win, you most likely don't see what you could have done better?
And simply applauding to placate some one might just be infantile, right?
I mean if you are applauding just to make someone feel better about themselves, that is what you do for children, right? Not for adults, not usually any way. ( at least I don't. But I'm a dick. So I hear any way ;) ) lol
I champion VS like no one's business, and worked to help build more than one community of players in various areas around the country. Not just competitive play, but the game in general.
Because the game is a good game. It has a couple of weaknesses, but it is still growing and there is time to fix those things.
I personally come on here to discuss issues of import to me because I reach UDE and my fellow gamers all at one shot, where as to try that singularly might take a lot more time than I'd thnk it was worth.
None is saying that the hater is the best way to be.
But instead that if you are going to say it is good, isn't it more helpful to get a 'this is good because...' kind of response?
Originally posted by cfbrunner UDE should be happy that people care enough to want things to be better. If we all rode around on our pink unicorns all day long, they might assume that they never have to improve or change anything.
As a writer, the worst possible comment I can get on a critique is 'I loved it'!. That sort of criticism is completely useless to me, since I can't use it to improve my abilities.
While I'll certainly agree that there are some idiots around here that gripe for attention, I will also defend those people that take the time to put together a coherent argument about something they think needs improvement.
And while I certainly might not agree with the complaint, I'm not going to call someone 'dumb' or a 'hater' because of it.
Below this level of constructive discussion, however, we have the 'lovers' and the 'haters'. People who provide no value to the conversation whatsoever, but just throw flames on the fire by hurling around insults.
And that seems to be one of the main ways that 'lovers' try to defend any complaint. Rather than even consider something might be improved, they jump up on their soapbox to deride any negative criticism and/or tell people to leave the game if they don't like it so much.
These 'lovers' and 'haters' couldn't find a coherent argument with two hands and a flashlight, but just run around screaming 'ITS GREAT!' and 'IT SUCKS!' at each other with no foundation to their arguments whatsoever.
There's no difference between the two, in my opinion. Neither 'lovers' nor 'haters' do anything to actually make the game better. Just two sides of the same sycophantic coin.

Dicks don't applaud, that's for sure. They boo. They throw tomatoes.
Then they run around telling other people that applauding is infantile.
I mean, look at this. You are now telling me that there is a "correct" and "incorrect" way to applaud!
Xmen 3 is another great example of what happens when you take something that has fans and try to take advantage of the fan base already in existence and then convert it in to another medium and go around disregarding the feelings of those that made it popular in the first place.
Xmen 3 is a great movie, but it isn't a great XMEN movie. See the difference? I would have loved Daredevil if they hadn't called him Daredevil. He had so few true ties to the actual comic that it was borderline insulting that they would do that to us the fans, while trying to bring in those that aren't already fans.
Callisto doesn't have those powers.. next to none if I remember correctly, actually. That was Calliban and Quicksilver combined.
The movie drew from so many different xmen sources that it came across as jumbled at times.
And while if I watch it looking forward to a great xmen movie, I can't help but be a bit disappointed.
But when I watch and expect a good movie that has mutants that are variations on the characters I've read about for years, I can't help but get a little giddy.
What you expect affects what you'll get...or at least how you'll feel about what you get anyway :)

Dude... Chad has stated previously in this thread that he does not accept compliments like that. You need a thorough critique of his post before he will consider it to be proper applause.
I am not saying that there is an incorrect way to applaud.
nothing of the sort.
I AM saying that MORE can be gotten from a different kind of applause is all.
See, there is a difference.
I think applause is great. UDE deserves it, and most of the staff deserves it too. ( That Bojo guy though...I don't know about him :) )
The Game is great!
The support system needs work. It is true. It is a work in progress. That is fine. Telling them that it is fine instead of offering input however isn't truly helping the work in progress, right?
Come one Stu, you know me better than that...at least I'd think you would :)
There are different kinds of positives, right?
How many different A's can you give in school now adays? ( when i was in school an a was anything from a 95 to 100.)
Getting a good grade, VS getting feedback are different things, right?
So if you look at getting a good grade as being positive reinforcement, but look at criticism as a failure, then there is the gap between the two opines.
It was one of the best post because he pointed out that the mere exchange of opinions and platitiudes does not constitute meaningul discourse or a geniune dialouge. An essential element of productive conversations is conveying your thought process and not just your thougts.
Statemenst of "I love it" or "I hate it" are both detrimential to meaningful discourse due to their divisive and simplistic nature. When encountering such comments the only response is acceptance or rejection. The lack of substance provides no avenues for a mutual exchange of ideas.
Communication is a beneficial end in and of itself. Through the act of exposing our thought processes and remain engage on this level, we have the opprotunity to come a mutual understanding. The mere expression of opinions does not allow for this engagement to occur.

This post is why most flame wars involve you. All you are doing here is taking a backhanded shot at cfbrunner.
Take the words of our savior (Jeff Donais) to heart.
