I'm not surprised; the Starcity forums have been dead for forever.
This is another thing that in isolation wouldn't necessarily be a terrible thing, but with everything else, it's definitely not encouraging. At this point I think the health of the game depends on whether Hellboy, Marvel Team-Up and World's Finest - along with a coherent demo and store play system - can rejuvenate the game from the doldrums it's currently in.
I'm not suprised really, the game just isn't big enough to generate the kind of money from ads to sustain the amount of money they were paying per article. StarCity was basically using their Vs. site as a loss leader to drive sales to their online store.
If you wonder why most of the Pros write for Metagame, it's because they pay fairly high rates per article for weekly gigs. In turn this makes it very hard for the other sites to compete.
Here at Realms, we pretty much pour every advertising and donation dollar right back into the site and we pay our writers a rate that we feel will allow us to continue on for as long as the game is around.
im not sure why starcitygames needed a starcityvs, quite frankly.. seeing as how starcitygames pretty much covers everything.
i mean, i think vs only needs a few sites, the player/fanbase is not as large as magic for example..
besides, vsrealms is the end all be all when it comes to vs discussion, and for articles you got metagame and tcgplayer.. dont need many more then that.
and i wish i had the money for that auction by the way. that many vs cards.. wow.

I agree ... personally, I never really go to any other site except for VSRealms and Metagame except when I have to during "preview season".
VS used to be a bigger game though, and right now it seems to be shrinking (I'm not saying the game is "dying", I'm saying it seems to be shrinking. They still make L5R for pete's sake; a devoted fan base can keep a game alive for a ridiculous amount of time - I'm just saying that our player base is smaller than it used to be, that's all. I have nothing but optimism for the future of the game itself.), so some of the more periferal sites may be losing their exclusive VS coverage over the next year or so ... *cough* pojo *cough*.
Yeah, I really liked SCG's articals. Alex Brown's were the best, as his draft set reviews were really informative and helped out a lot. Kim C. also had some excellent articals on her match reports and how her deck ran.
Basicly, I like articals that tell me why a deck is doing so well, instead of leaving you to try and see how it works, and if you dont know how, well, then dont play.
Same goes for the draft articals. I may think I know what cards are good to draft, but if someone would to put it into perspective, I may see things quite diffrently.
Don't get me wrong, VSR has some nice articals too. I just dont think it has exactly what im looking for.
On another note, I really hope VS isnt shrinking. Its a greta game, and perhaps one of few Im actually good at (Never could cut it at magic...). Perhaps the only thing I can think of that may turn people off is EOME. Its not the mechanic, I think its a great addtion to the game, but the problem is that its almost impossible to find, and when you do, its usually the amount of a whole box for one of them. To put it in magic terms, would you jump into a game where you need to buy 4 Black Lotus in order to play a proper deck?
Now some may say, hey, thats only golden and silver. But that only leaves modern and sealed. I love silver, and golden is fun as well. I just feel that maybe everyone should get a set of EMOE's...because everyone else deserves to have fun on a pro level too.
I saw that the other night and didn't realize it was the Star City collection. If you go to the EBay listing, there is an Excel sheet you can download to see what is in the collection. To my recollection, there were no Enemy's in the lot.
It appears I cannot open up Excel sheets ... could anyone give me a rundown of the 52 promos in the lot? I will, of course, rep.
I have a large amount of VS cards, and think that it is a noteworthy moment to consider when a store decides the game is not worth the effort to support on the secondary market, which will greatly cripple the game further in that region I fear.
I know that a game definitely does better when players can obtain the cards they want to play the game, and the competitive nature of humans drives a player to get he cards he/ she wants. New consumers will then see existing players playing and can develope interest and become new players.
Losing that resource can cause players that want to play to stop being able to get the cards they need, which instead of generating more pack sales results in players leaving the game for an easier to obtain game.
Should Vs go the way of the DODO, I'll do the same for it that I still do for Star Wars even now, and that is let people make decks out of my extras. We play lots of 'dead games' even now, including gems like Rage and GI JOE.
I think it might be time to look deeper in to things, people. UDE has a 10 year contract advertised in the backs of the initial rule books ( SEE MOR AND DOR). If those contracts should fall apart before the 10 year mark, they have other problems. The licensing attached should help nurture the game, not hurt it. Heroclix used a live action game board a few years ago with the release of the Daredevil movie. Maybe something more directly linked is a good idea for the life of Vs?
What if UDE gave out demo decks at movie theaters for the release of related movies? Or maybe TV cartoon contests where viewers can recieve free product, just to get the stuff out there?
My shop ordered far too many Xmen starters by accident, and I'm looking in to ways to use that SNAFU to our advatnage. Maybe I can get us to give out free starters to people that buy x amount of packs ( no pun intended).
Maybe other shops have similar possibilities lying around. If you love the game, stop acting like it isn't in trouble.
IT IS. Period.
The trick though is it doesn't have to stay in trouble. We need UDE's help to get off their butts and fix the hobby league stuff immediately.
We need UDE to support the local game stores a little better than they do right now. UFS supplies much better product for support than just Extended Arts of commons and uncommons most of us don't even want. UFS gives out exclusive characters for free to stores for running their events. They give out even more as encentives and thank yous for buying their product at all.
UDE has put their money where their mouth is from the start, and hasn't found the right way to distribute their money in a timely manner so far. These things go a long way toward fixing things and keeping this game going.
But, players, if you love the game, dumping all of your cards won't help slow the games demise. If you like the game, not just for the promise of a paycheck, keep your cards. Teach new players. Share what you've learned.
The game is dying, but it doesn't have to.
Believe it or not, each and everyone of you has the power to help.
