UDE always keeps the artwork for potential use in future sets. Aside from a card like Jetpack, which was released in MSM, some cards have been released even later - like Rachel Summers<>Phoenix in the X-Men set, for example, was art dating back to MOR or beyond...
Yes. I could see the 'reduced cost' version being a variation of Substitute in the future...if they can figure out a way to balance it properly.
Anyways, I guess the Beak art is always there if they need someone for X-Men legacy, as well.
Interesting to see both 'Plot Twists and 'Events'.
Wolverine
Keyword: EVOLVE
cost 7
16/16
If you recruit without replacing pay full cost
If you recruit by replacing a character of the same name pay the difference in their recruit cost
(replace 4 drop wolvie with 7 drop and pay 3 leaving you 4 to recruit someone else, maybe a second 7 replacing a 3?)
maybe with a limit of one evolution per turn?
would be a way to give added benefit to playing multiple versions of the same character since to play the stronger version you KO the smaller anyway
Keyword: Devolve (ok better word needed)
Wolverine
cost 4
8/8
If a higher cost character named wolverine was stunned while in combat this turn and this card is in your KOd pile, you may replace the stunned version with this one.
I've got an oversided 2-drop Nightcrawler from the beta. He is a 90/90. I'm glad they fixed the text and the game play. Read this:
"If your opponent has an open Defense Row space and the Attack Row space immediately behind it is also open, Nightcrawler may attack your opponent's Power directly. KO Nightcrawler if you do not control another X-Men character."
I'd give anything for just one or two of those beta cards to help fill out the "neat stuff" page in my binder. Anyone know how frequently they show up?

You probably won't see them to often. Only a few demo decks ever made their way into the general public, but I'm sure that they had a complete set made up and at least some test runs printed before the big R&D shift in late '03. You'll probably see them as UDE people of that time leave the company and start to clean out their desks!
GenCon '03 had the "debut" of this Beta VS. I remember that I was judging Yugi at the time, and my internet buddy L8ton(who incidently got hired right after this GenCon at UDE) was doing Marvel demos in the exhibition hall. I know that the reaction was mixed enough that they delayed the release from September '03 to November, then it went on indefinite hold. While that was going on, Jeff D. had started hiring on a lot of old magic players (da Hump and others), and they went to town retooling the game. It was before GenCon '04 that we finally got the finished product. I remember because I was demoing it at that GenCon with Spider-man Starter decks, and handing out batman and Spider man T's. I'm pretty sure that the spiderman set wasn't out at the time though. Well it was PC Indy #1 that year to, which gave us Brian K. added into the design mix.
The oversized Nightcrawler was one of the freebies at the UDE booth in '03.

That is a fantastic story. I really wish I could have been more involved early on... or heck, I wish I'd even found the game sooner than I did!
And yeah, I figured they'd be rare. I'll just have to keep checking good ol' eBay from time to time and see if I can luck out and find someone selling a card or two, and hope no one else sees it!

I think that's how I got mine - luck. I don't remember exactly what the title of the auction was, but I remember thinking that if he would have worded it a little better, a lot more people would have seen it. But since the competition was low, I got 'em for a lot less than I was willing to spend.
I was playtester for the "original" version of the game, but I was never able to get ahold of these cards. I do however still have my original playtest cards somewhere...but they aren't very interesting to look at, no art, just the gametext color coded by card type. Still a neat little piece of the history of the game I suppose...
