I concur!
Hell... I would agree to the following prize structure:
Two Boxes and a Mat for First
A Box a Mat for Second
(Keep in mind, not the standard set-release mat. Something exclusive and perrrty would be nice)
3rd/4th each get a half a box
5-8 get 6 packs
(and the normal t8 EA's, obv)
This is just me, of course...
That's fairly extravagant... unless you're thinking that the cost structure would remain the same.
I'd rather see that cut in half, but have the cost to play reduced.
I think what most people are trying to get across in this thread - is that while prize support is nice, the reason we came out to play was to play in a sanctioned competitive event. Something worth travelling for - more official than Hobby League.
After that, I'm pretty open. You can cut the cost, you can leave the cost the same and offer less cash and more product.
My #1 issue with PCQ's is that they are overlorded by a TO and poorly distributed geographically (at least in my area). Currently, the places where PCQ's are held near me are not central to where a lot of players are located. If you live in northern New Jersey, you must either go to New York City or drive about 2 hours south to Berlin, NJ. Neither of these options is convenient for a great deal of players in my area.
I do want some sort of competetive environment to play in beyond Hobby League, though, and I'm not sure City Championships will fill that role. Basically, I don't need to win money so much ('though it was nice) as I want to be challenged. If there is something UDE can do to raise Hobby League up to more of a PCQ level of competition, that would be great.
Personally, I think that PCQs are a bigger realistic draw for casual players than big events that are out of reach [lack of PC Points, money, etc.] It is a constant event to look forward to, that people can actually attend and gear their practice towards.
I can go on about reasons to keep it, and the many people i know who love to participate in them, but I'll keep my message short:
I'm curious because I'm not in the know with all the financial numbers but how much were all the pcq's costing Vs a year?
Most of us would see no problem in bringing back the pcq's with no money involved but most of would like a return of the pro cirucit ,just a maybe more restrucured one ..I don't feel pro's would even mind if say everything was reduced a bit even taking the grand prize down to 25,000 or 30.
Just make it so the guy who places 75th can still break even on his travel .
Later when the hobby league can get strong ,and belive it will, because we are all smart creative people.(You have to be to play this game.)I belive with our voices being heard and they will be because we are after all the mighty consumer.I belive we can all including UDE find a compromise that makes UDE accountants ,casual player and pro alike all happy.
I would just like to know your thoughts on this.
anybody have the breadown on how all of it costs each year?
I decided to start this thread to help out my local community and the community as a whole. I believe events like PCQ's are essential to a games success and would like to see this program revisited and renewed.
PCQ's
do they need cash prizes? I think not
Should they be run by vendors? Oh heck yes!
Is 4 times a year enough? Heavens no! more like once a month or more.
Playmats and deck boxes? It's nice and I would like to keep them around. Perhaps offer UDE store points and if you win enough you can get your playmat/deck box.

Your general idea about getting the community back int he game and your zeal is great, however I think what you want done is can can be acomplished by city chanmpionships and hobby league. Does the hobby league need some tweaking? yes it does but it accomplished exactly what your asking for.
It is now easier then ever to qualify for a PC assuming your rating isnt in the tank. PCQs in my area were often a joke, lots of time you are up against people already well qualified for the PC. How many threads have their been about PRO's at the PCQ's, tons. This solves that. I think everybody is in the sky is falling mode. Everyone is like the game is dead the game is dead. This game still has a large payout for its PC's its not as large as it once was but it is still pretty big, Magic big? NO butstill enough to keep people playing. If everyone wants to exodus well that sucks but I am sure glad the competition is thining, i may actually have a shot now.
Screw the PC! I call for a VS worlds with PCQ's as invites to that. One big money tournament a year and many 5K events would be the happy medium we need to seek. Then when VS is the cash cow again we can reexamine a PC structure.
No cash prizes? sorry bud, but the money was the real draw for me. Alot of people, including myself, can't make it to the 10ks and PCs, and pcqs were the only way for me to actually make money off the game. I'm not saying that all I want to do is make money, but having something to play for other than more packs usually makes a game. How many games do you see are still big that don't offer prize support on a local level? magic, yu-gi-oh, WOW,possibly the spoils, all offer some kind of money support on a local level.
I say stick with the new PC invite system. Main reason alot of people went was only for the money anyway. If you wanna play for fun, stick to teh hobby leagues and city championships.

I'm not sure I agree with this. I went to my first PCQ about 6 months ago, and went 4-4 for 7th place. I earned 1 PC point, but my rating pretty much broke even. If I did that 10 times in the old system, my rating would still be around the same, but I'd be able to attend the PC. In this new system, I'll never be able to go to a PC, because after 5 tournaments, my rating is currently 2500 even.
I liked the PC Points system, because it gave people like me a chance to go to a big event every now and then. Now I probably won't be able to go to one unless I luck out and go undefeated at a PCQ/City Championship... and even if I do that, will that bring a 2500 up to a 2650? Maybe.

Blame THAT on a Lazy TO/Lack of Good Sites. We have One TO for all of New England (Read: Six States... if you COUNT Rhode Island as A State.)
Some of them are a short drive, some of them are... well... Some of them are not. Two Hours away? Meh, sometimes. (Though I don't drive myself) I don't see that big of a deal.
Yes... I have said it once before, and will say it again...
the -All But One PC +More than a A Few PCs plan rocks my world
1. Prize support for City Championships has not been adressed specifically, although it was "hinted" that they would be product based and not monetary sums of cash. Fact is, people love cash... and people hate change. I do not see this format as a bad thing.
2. 2650 is not difficult to aspire to... but does seem to encourage people to have multiple UDE #'s. PC points may have given everyone an equal chance at a shot at the big show eventually, but realistically, the PC isn't for people that have been 50% every tournament they attend.
3. Stop charging local venues for the hobby league kits. Its silly... considering its purpose, i dont see why a little financial UDE juggling cant fix this.
