I played Quickfate at Edgeworld. I don't bring a knife to a gunfight. Went 5-1 in swiss, and placed 5th after losing to a well designed Spiderfriends stall to Galactus piloted by Binkley.
-I had a terrible headache all day and still had a good time
-I'm a relatively casual player who enjoys serious competition at tournaments; I'd rather play Big Deck and Raid Decks than duel all day, but every once in a while it's good to draw some blood with the Edgeworld regulars in constructed. Since I need to keep my ratings up above 2650 to go to Indy, I wanted to play a solid deck. Going up against Ryan Jones, Joe O'Brien, Patrick Yapjoco, and other Pro Circuit Day 2 (and Day 3) regulars, it was imperitive to choose a good deck and play it well. Hellboy/VU wasn't getting it done.
-Start on time, enforce slow play. Neither are a major concern, as we started at 11ish and finished 9 rounds by 6 pm. Quickfate gave me a lot of downtime between rounds, so these minro problems were more pronounced in my experience.
-We had 17 PCQ and pre-release regulars.
-It was great. i wish I could go to my home store (Game Empire) on 4/7/07, but I have to work. Looking forward to Comic Cult on 4/14/07.
Hey thats us! I'm running that CC!!!! Come hungry!!
Thanks for starting this thread. Your questions are exactly the the type of feedback we are looking for. We want to keep making this event better each time we run them.
Everyone - if you have attended a City Championship and could take the time to post your feedback here it would be appreciated. (and it will get read)
It's also nice that the thread has managed to stay on topic. ;)
Thanks.
Scott
OK I just have 3 things you guys could do to make this game explode.
1.Advertise really simple I don't think anyone person on this site can stress that enuff.
2.City Champ LOVE them. I have to say that some more prize support stupid stuff T-shirts,Hats,Deck Tins,Card Sleeves,Pins.
3.Make yourself more present on the boards.Believe me It will help immensely we love to hear from you guys as often as possible.
Did you enjoy it?
Was it enough for you to want to go to another one?
If you are a casual player and went, do you feel it was too competitve?
Was there anything the venue could have done differently to improve the City Championship?
What was your turnout?
what was your final opinion once it was over?
I went to Edgeworld, had a great time.
It certainly was enough to get me to go to more of these events.
I'm officially an ametuer player, but I do enjoy a competitive environment, and this CC had it all - spider-man, quickfate, checkmate, darkseid - much variety!
Edgeworld did a great job of running this event. The only improvement I can point out is the usual one - start time. I understand though that we want to get as many people playing as possible so waiting a few to get the stragglers is OK.
We had 17 people at the event.
I like this event, and I look forward to attending the next couple in my area (Pasadena, then Torrance). I do hope that we get some kind of mid-level events again in the future, something along the lines of 10k's or the like.
Did you enjoy it? I loved it ( I ran one)
Was it enough for you to want to go to another one? yeah im trying this weekend

I think I did a good job just got to get more people there
What was your turnout? 12
what was your final opinion once it was over?
This is great but we still need PCQs
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to answer some of these questions. I greatly appreciate it.

Absolutely enjoyed it.
I will be attending more if at all feasible.
I like higher level competition so I don't know that it can get "too" competitive. Everyone was polite and a pleasure to play though, so it was great in that respect.
We had a higher turnout than expected, so the play space was a bit cramped, but other than that, no.
19, which was about half a dozen more than we were expecting.
It was a very enjoyable event. I look forward to more.

Ok ill preface this by stating I did not attend the first CC in our area, i was out on business.
The days/weeks leading into it, there was a lot (and I mean a lot) of talk among the locals to have a friendly ban going on. In that we, on our word, will not bring Quickfate, Ahmed, Kree/VU decks.
This is great for the HL scene, but I think at any higher level of competition, you must be prepared to beat top tier decks. There are 2 incentives to win the CC. 1) face on a card 2) the playmat and EA. And any prize money fromt he local store.
If I didnt care about the 'Staff Pick" for original deck, and wantd to win out the CC, I would haev brought a competative deck known to run the format (as mentioned above). But at the same time, this presses the issue of community.
If you are the only person, of one of the few, in your area to run these top tier decks, you set yourself up to be an outcast by your community, win or lose (but especially win). If you should go into the finals with such a deck, you can enter a 'split' to ensure you get the mat and the other person gets a chance at the face card.
But doesnt this defeat the intent of CCs?
With that said....
Im going into my first CC this weekend, and Im faced with this dillema. I couldnt care less about the face on a card, and I dont like to lose. So with the above statements, what type of deck do you think Ill run?
The play itself is fine. A lot of interesting stuff is being played. Theres a good mix of serious and jank being played. The fact that 2 seperate Avengers team attack decks made top 8 cut at Acme Games has still got me confused. (Xmen/Avengers, Legion/Avengers) The fact that a Mono Doom, 4 rares Moloids deck is dominating Ohio is mind-boggling as well.
Two issues with CCs
1)PCQ round length is exhausting for the prize support being offered. 6 rounds of swiss plus top 8 cut with 3 round matches is just way too much for the semi-casual nature of the tourney with 19 people. I think top 8 cut should be removed with a few more swiss rounds or top 4/8 cut should be 1 game not 3.
2)It would be cool if UDE could offer stores the ability to purchase additional cool stuff from UDE to be used as prizes. T-Shirts, Deck Tins, Playmats, and Sleeves would make the tournaments slightly more worthwhile to pay $25 in gas to drive 2 hours to a tourney for some EAs. I'm not saying UDE should give the stuff for free. I just think it would be cool if a site could purchase additional unique stuff to be used as incentives to get people to the tournaments. Packs are cool, but considering the times the ability to earn additional stuff would be awesome.
Was it enough for you to want to go to another one?
Could have been a little more swag but ya I'll be going to a lot of them.

I will answer for both my 10 year old and I, who went to the Phoenix City Championship on Monday
Did you enjoy it? An Emphatic yes for both.
Was it enough for you to want to go to another one? Definitely yes, and I expect to go back to the venue for every Monday for time infinite.
If you are a casual player and went, do you feel it was too competitve? I am super casual (still try to win each game - but don't feel pain if it doesn't work out) and I felt it was as competitive as it should be - no yelling (except on one guys part) and lots of laughter - a FUN competition.
Was there anything the venue could have done differently to improve the City Championship? Nothing springs to mind, except calling time on the one match that was still going after the timer ran out in round 3.
What was your turnout? 16, including the offspring and I.
what was your final opinion once it was over? Andy and I really loved it, chatted like schoolgirls about it all the way home, and were very happy just to leave with the Extended Art Harry Osborn. Thanks UDE and Thanks Game Nightz (and Thanks to all who attended for making my son feel welcome!)
Thank you everyone who has posted so far. Its great that a lot of people are enjoying the CC's so much already. The only problem I'm seeing is the lack of prize support? If everyone feels that way please make sure you emphasize it, Scott has already said he will be reading this thread.
I will rep everyone who has left their feedback as soon as I can in 24 hours.
aceswolf, I apologize if i came off rather blunt. Its great that you want to save the game. You just have to be a little more mellow about it. Don't give up the fight, but don't be overly assertive. Making your voice be heard is a great thing, just don't make people want to ignore your voice.
I can't really answer more than what many of the players at my CC answered.
I do have some suggestions for improvements:
1. I think that UDE should have a more detailed document on how to run the CC for some stores who aren't familiar with the process. I understand that it's in the Tournament Policy but just like PTOs get an operations document for PCQs, the store TOs should get something similar that is specific to these Marquee events.
2. Top 8 should be 1-game, top 4 could be 2/3. It's really hard to finish 2/3 in only an hour.
3. More advance advertising for Marquee Events. The week of was a little short notice.
My opinion is that these Hobby League events are great. I just noticed that the Random Punks event also has a playmat which is very cool. People are playing VS at stores that didn't support HL in the past and that's a good thing.

Again, thank you. And please keep it coming.
I here ya dude. In real life I'm probly the most mellow person ever (If you know me you know why). Anyway don't worry about cracking on me Everyone does I deal with it. I'm passionate about VS thats all.
