Jeph Loeb is...Jeph Loeb you can either deal with him or not...I thought the majority of his run on S/B was um interesting, I actually like Hush though and Riddler as a mastermind, of course he's also the same man who brought us Cir-El...ugh.
I actually have a friend who loves Cir-El....er loves her look I should specify. Plus, Jeph Loeb didn't invent Cir-El, that was I guess Steven Seagle in the Superman 10 cent adventure. So you can't blame Mr. Loeb for that. See LostKhance, there are people that were cool with Riddler being the mastermind. I loved Jeph Loeb's run on S/B, I quit the book after that cause that alien crap was sooo bad and I think I heard the other post Loeb stuff has been crap as well, but let me know if that's changed.
Mr. Loeb himself said the book would get better, though I don't know how he knew.
yeah he might not have invented her but, he did popularize her...that's almost as bad...like I said his stuff to me is really hit or miss I loved the Lost episodes he wrote too
top 5 modern writers who don't suck so much: Haven't been able to listen to the cast yet, so if I've mentioned anyone PB'd I guess I'll find out later.
Peter David; If merely for his run on The Hulk and Fallen Angel, though his other stuff has been pretty freaking good too.
Bill Willingham: Fables, Elementals, though his run on Robin was lackluster at best.
Mike Carey: Lucifer, Confessions of a Blabbermouth, and Ultimate Vision are all pretty excellente.
Grant Morrison: The only reason he's not #1 on this list is because half the time I barely understand what he's talking about. Grant says things in a paragraph that it takes BMB three pages to fill.
James Robinson: The only comic author to make me openly weep like a little girl.

Cir-El is poular? News to me. Like I said, almost all writers have a couple bad stories, but I think most of the stuff Mr. Loeb puts out is good, really really good. Wouldn't you agree that when he hits, he hits well?

Isn't that the same thing Dylan and Billy said about Kirkman and BMB? I'm pretty sure. Grant is a great writer and would have made my list above Jeph Loeb probably, but these guys said it so I wanted to give out something different.
I would agree that if you're not overly concerned with things like continuity and don't mind massive ret-cons following in his wake then yes taken outside of continuity his work is massively enjoyable. That's perhaps why I enjoy his screenwriting stuff more, he's not working against 60+ years of history. I'm also a sucker for Ed McGuiness Art so that didn't hurt S/B either.
I don't know what Billy and Dylan said as I said I haven't listened to the cast yet, was planning on listening while i fell asleep tonight. Speaking of which...
EDIT:
As for Kirkman I don't really dig much on Zombies, so...meh. I do like Invincible though and Iredeemable Ant-Man.

It's not on this show, it's from a while back. I'm pretty sure it was one of the times they reviewed Walking Dead, they said that it takes Kirkman like a panel to say what BMB says in like three pages. Very similiar to what you said so I figured you were unknowingly quoting them. You don't need to like zombies to like Walking Dead. Especially right now, zombies are one of the last things on the character's minds. Also, on Jeph Loeb, all that ret-con continuity bs is thrown around a lot. I mostly hear it about BMB, this is a first on Jeph Loeb, and I don't care about it I guess. Not unless it's something really important. In fact, on these guy's review on Fallen Son:Wolverine, Billy I believe said his one criticism was that Jeph Loeb DID have to worry about continuity and that it would have been a lot better without it. So, yes I guess I don't care so I do find Jeph Loeb's writing "massively enjoyable".
1. he and joe kelly got me to start reading superman again...uh, thanks?
2. the dark victory ending was spoiled for me cus issue one was so horribly written. come on, WHO didn't know it was his daughter? jeez...
3. is it hush? is it jason todd? is it hush? who cares?
4. got my long halloween HC (another badly plotted story...sorry, you know it's true) signed by jeph and tim at comic con about 4 years ago. tim was completely high and relatively awesome. jeph was a dick.

He made use of Cir-El on 2 occasions, but he did not create that atrocity; That honor belongs to Steve Seagle and Scott McDaniel (I've never forgiven them). I also really enjoyed Hush, especialy since there was a twist involving the Riddler. I like for the characters to evolve a bit, and remind us they could be threatening when for too long we think of them as a joke (for some rease Susanne Summers comes to mind).
On a final note I find Jeff's work very hit and miss, though I though his Superman run back in the day was wonderful.
One last interesting note about Jeff; Also in 2006, it was Jeph who chose his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut to be subject to superhero destruction in the opening issue of Marvel's crossover event, Civil War.
5. Brian K. Vaughn
4. Brian Michel Bendis
3. J.M. Stravinsky
2. Robert Kirkman
1. Geoff Johns
I read everything these guys put out.
my main beef with dc, marvel, and other companies is the delays because writers and artists are overworked, and I think the whole #1 thing is tied to it. I think their marketing plan is where you go to your store and find your book didn't come in but you see this shiny new book with a big #1 on it and it has varients covers. Thats just my thoery thought.
First-timer here. Got my iPod in May and BOTC was one of the first podcasts I listened to. Listened to a lot of other podcasts since then, but I appreciate that the show is well-focused and doesn't meander heavily into small talk.
Regarding the Outsiders mini (as opposed to just doing it within the series), I'm OK with that and really don't see much reason for objection. It'll be over quick, so the people who like it can get a concentrated Outsiders fix and if people don't like it past the first issue, they can skip the rest and come back to Outsiders the next month rather than wait five months. The parallel made to Brad Meltzer's JLA launch doesn't seem like it fits. These Five of a Kind stories look like they'll be focused on a certain pair of characters in each issue; that's not what Meltzer was really doing with "Tornado's Path." Heck, we barely saw much of Vixen or Geo-Force.

I've never heard anything negative about Long Halloween, it was good. You said Jeph was a dick because you were a dick. He's been nothing but awesome to me and other people I've talked to who have met him.

Oh Grant Morrison. Aside from Douglas Adams, he has had the most influence over my writing (code for: I swipe his style).
I won't be making a top 5 for you, but I would like to mention someone who would be in my top 5: Peter Milligan. He is a frustrating writer for sure, as the quality of his book is proportional to the amount of creative control he has over the content. For example: Shade and X-Statix are mindblowingly great. X-Men and Toxin...not so much.
