Eh, I hate catorizing people. Most people fall into several categories, and really there are actually 10 kinds of people: those that know bianary and those that don't.
This is exactly how I play. First and formost I started playin this game because of the flavour and characters on the cards. If it wasn't liscenced comic book teams, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it, no matter what the mechanics are like. I'll also never win money at vs, if I even bother to enter a pro event again, because I'll play what I like. If it's game breaking too, great. If not, doesn't bother me. I'll concentrate on making the x-men work rather than play whatever is the new degenerate hotness. I also try to include the most 'legendary' characters where possible, to borrow ude's term. So I love the new way they're approaching things. I have the most fun out playing someone with x-men, avengers, defenders, whatever I know and appeals to me. In fact I'll normally look at the art work and flavour text before the mechanics on a card. For instance my favourite freaky deck at the moment is one I've dubbed charlies angels. It's an x-mental/underworld deck with only female characters apart from professor X. Doesn't matter how good something is, if it doesn't fit this criteria it doesn't get used. Wolverine is my favourite character too so it really hurts to leave him out. His time is coming though...
My favorite comic book characters to play are usualy my least favorite to play. They either conflict with my playing style, or, generally suck. Not to say that I don't try very hard to build a deck that I like playing with including my favorite comic book characters.
I have a hard time playing with a deck that is a very good deck and will win a good deal of the time, if its something I don't like to play. It feels like I'm selling out just to win. I'd rather lose with a deck that I built, and like to play.
Thusfar almost all iconic teams have been straight curve teams with no odd themes. Often the theme-style decks work better and are rewarded more, which has pulled them to the forefront. Titans and Brotherhood were two of the only exceptions, and tehy actually worked really well (of course, Sindicate also was and, well, look at them).
BUT, I have found if I a team plays well I'll actually go and read their comic. I found my new favorite (JSA) this way, and I got to read awesome stories like Villians United and Crisis. Good times :).
