Okay, so I sent my morning trying to figure out who the Director of Licensing was at DC Comics. It appears that they have multiple offices, and nobody was very much help over the phone...
Historically, letter writing campaigns go a lot farther than e-mails. However, sending a letter just directly to DC isn't going to work because an intern will end up reading it. Trust me, I used to work as a comic book intern. SEND YOUR LETTERS TO PAUL LEVITZ, PRESIDENT OF DC COMICS.
Paul Levitz
c/o DC Comics
1700 Broadway, 7th Fl.
New York, NY 10019-5905
Try to briefly explain the current situation to him, since there's a good chance this is going on without his direct supervision. Cite the success of similar games (like Heroclix) and the potential for having a continued interest in the game.
In addition to a brief (and courteous) letter I also encourage you to include a copy of one of your favorite DC VS. Cards. Sending the company a physical object is one of the best ways to grab their attention. In theory we can flood their office with VS. cards until they change their mind.
But this plan will only work if you guys send out your letters. So do it.
I vote for everyone sending in a Mobilize, DC's rarest card, just to show them we are willing to part with a money card to just to see them back in the game.
If DC drops, then probably more Indy titles will be brought in to make people not too sick of all Marvel sets. That isn't too bad, considering the success of the Hellboy starter.
One thing to note ... was it really a success though?
A lot of people felt it was the best starter set for Vs. to date [hardly a daunting task though], and there are a few times where BPRD has shown up in decks, not to mention Zinco products. However, I'm pretty sure that, like many of the older sets, there are a lot of Hellboy Essentials laying around. If they can make a deal quickly with a third party, they could use that as a pallette cleanser between back to back Marvel sets, but unfortunately, unless they already have the license, it will mean that unless the deal with DC stalls, they wouldn't really be getting that product out the door any earlier than the new DC set, seeing as they'd have to acquire the license than playtest the set, etc.
Just some info on why online/email petitions are far less effective than physical ink & paper petitions. I also echo the suggestion for Rallying Cry! as the card to send. The flavor text is awesome for this purpose. I plan on sending a play set (for emphasis).
Thats the thing though if DC drops I believe that would be the end of VS. I read Marvel mostly. But when we say drop DC we are talking about BATMAN, SUPERMAN...
I agree sending a real letter via the USPS is the way to go. Including Rallying Cry (great idea!) and maybe a copy of a favorite card of yours (or his??) would be good too.
More info on Paul Levitz:
"I’m particularly proud of having written the first standard written contract for talent in our field in 1977—embodying basic concepts like return of original art, reprint fees, and laying out simple policies like the period of time in which the company was obliged to accept delivery"
Just a copy of the letter I'm sending for those of you looking for inspiration:
Greetings Mr. Levitz,
Let me start by saying I appreciate you taking the time to read this short letter. I am writing in regards to DC Comic’s ongoing discussions with Upper Deck Entertainment’s Vs. System division expanding their licensing category. While the particular details of the discussions are unknown to me, it has been brought to my attention as a supporter of the game that these discussions have at the very least caused a delay in the next DC set release in this game I love so much.
Vs. System is one of the very best trading card games on the market, ripe with comic flavor, complexity and fun. I must admit, when Vs. first came onto the gaming scene, I had little knowledge or interest in comic books or the universe developed around them. I started playing the game simply because it was a very interesting, very well designed game. However, once I started playing the game, I was rapidly drawn into a universe filled with amazing stories and superheroes I hadn’t known existed. UDE has done such a wonderful job of capturing not only the flavor of the individual heroes and villains, but in the story lines and overall feel as well. The art, flavor text, mechanics and endless parade of characters makes it impossible to resist the comic universe behind the cards that make up the game I love so much.
I tell you this because it was Vs. System and Vs. System alone that developed my interest in comics. Nothing else, not games, not TV shows, not even the movies, inspired me read and buy comic related material until Vs. came along. Batman has always been my favorite superhero, but until Vs. came along I would not have been able to name more than a handful of other DC comic characters. Now I can name dozens, along with back stories, and I regularly read multiple comic book arcs (The current Batman, Green Lantern, Checkmate and my personal current favorite, Gotham Underground).
So I implore you, Mr. Levitz, don’t allow the DC universe to disappear from Vs. System. I know from personal experience that Vs. System is a highly effective asset championing your great product.
Enclosed is an appropriate token of the cause I represent. Again I thank you for your time. Respectfully,
I'm going to try and get some letters out of our local Hobby League community. The majority of us are DC Comics' players, so I can't imagine that will be much of a problem.
Also, I reposted some of the DC contact info and possible solutions on my blog. I have no doubt that this letter-writing campaign can work, just as it has in the past for other groups.
