For Benni's benefit, the story on DC is that UDE announced they're negotiating to "expand the license" currently, so the next set is Marvel again, but don't get to upset just yet. It's not like DC totally up and quit on UDE. They're still talking.

If they packed this set full of great cards because they knew it was the end:
1. They wouldn't have bothered announcing MEV
2. They wouldn't have bothered announcing the DC problem
3. Billy Z wouldn't have bothered offering up answers to MEV questions

The good thing about paranoia is that it allows one to think without the burden of logic mucking things up. :p
I don't think this is the last set. I think it could be the last set if sales tanked horribly. I don't think that will be the case at all.
However, since it was bound to brought up in some way, I thought I'd offer a creative outlet to allow people to voice their fears without a ton of negativity bringing down people that don't want to read about how the game is dying and what have you.
All of that said, if they knew the game was dying, of course those at UDE that support VS would try to fight for it still and would continue to try to build up our excitement and anticipation and hopefully encourage us to be more supportive.
I'd get really paranoid if they did a refeature of Squadron Supreme ... just as an excuse to design "indirect" legacy for the JLA ;)
Or if they made the Thunderbolts a bit "too much" like the Suicide Squad, made SHIELD a bit "too much" like Checkmate, made Neg Zone too much like Anti-Matter, etc ...
Although it is funny that Sub Mariner is honing in on Aquaman's Ponies with his own 2-drop army characters ;)
Squadron Supreme
Brotherhood / X-Men (FOR A LONG TIME)
Villain's United
Secret Six
Checkmate
Teen Titans (FOR A LONG TIME)
Kree
JLI
Legion of Super-Heroes
Personally, I'd like to see a little more consolidation go on, like we're already seeing. Omega Flight is part of Alpha Flight, for instance.
All Mutant Heroes should be X-men affiliated with either a dual affiliation to something else, or with a version that references their actual affiliation (X-factor, X-force, Excalibur, Excettera :p)
That will help ensure that EVERY set has legacy for all teams for each company. 6 primary teams per company, perhaps. JLA (includes JLA, JLI, JLU.. we can dream, right?)
Maybe that's too hard to do. Maybe for the future of the game that is what we are already seeing and that looks good to me :)
