Cut Mutant of the year. In BYOT format, what do you really need to worry about? No one is packing burn decks, and most of the tech is all about combat stuff.
After some test drawing, I've decided to take out Henrietta and max up Battering Ram to 3. Henrietta will only really work once, I think, and it would be very difficult to search for either of them considering how much I have to conserve Mobilizes.
I don't really like Phat, as there's already a lot of discard going on.
Apocalypse is kind of luck-draw right now. Tough to call. Doop is decent, btw, if only because if I need to X-Statix HQ him to clear the board for a defense pump on Anarchist, that is a gain of 8 endurance that can push to the next round.
Right now I feel okay on DEF pumps, generally. That's a really interesting point about MOTY, holdkingsix, although MOTY is nice as a safety net to clear the board. I'm definitely looking at MOTY now as the biggest candidate to cut for 3 Kang Krossroads (which I would like to hit at least once per game.)
Other weird cards I'm considering? Flattened and Reset. Thoughts on these, anyone? Only 7 hours until gametime and very little time to adjust!

Keep the Mutant of the Year. SHIELD Burn is amazing and burns ridiciously fast. I would expect that someone would be running them (atleast in my meta).

Yeah, actually, the more I think about it, the more essential MotY is. Not only SHIELD burn, but also protection against Avengers Reservist (4-drop Human Torch), Doom (2-drop Puppet Master), MKO (6-drop Ghost Rider), Heralds (Galactus) and more. I need to keep it.
I've always found that if you get a FFB out on 1-3 that you're really better off w/out a 5 at all. 2 points on the Belt and a boosted Viv.
I've played a few non-Fate based decks with my Statix build and it does ok. I ended up dropping out 2 Meltdowns for 2 Mobi's though.
Characters:
4x Phat (1drop)
4x El Guapo
4x Vivisector (2drop)
4x Orphan (3drop)
1x Plazm
4x U-go-girl (4drop)
1x Dead Girl (5drop) - I did this to see if her ability would help with recovery
3x Zeitgeist
2x Anarchist (7drop)
2x Doop (8drop) - I usually tell my opponent I just "Doop'ed on your head"
1x Onslaught
Plots Twists:
4x Dead Weight
4x Star of the Show
4x Mutant of The Year
4x Spin Doctoring - this card wins me so many games
4x Acro Dodge
2x Mobilize
Locations:
2x X-statix HQ
2x X-statix Cafe - I'd probably change this around some to get in at least 1 Krossroads
FFB, Phat and Kang Krossroads are feeling more and more to me like weird insurance. (I want to hit them if I don't hit what I want.) If this wasn't BYOT, I would be packing 1 each of Kang Krossroads, The Hill and Shaw Industries since they can stack heavy, but I keep feeling like Entangle will make life more difficult for my opponent than Krossroads or FFB will.
I think it's key to hit a 1 with this deck. Hitting Phat and FBB by 2 will keep you in good shape. I don't have Krossroads in this build, and am unlikely to change it any time soon.
With Phat, he's basically an any-drop character. I've used him on 2, and I've used him on 10 (Seriously). I don't know what other 1s I'd use in a Statix build at this point, and I think they are key (KO them to either HQ or MotY).
As for the Cafe, I hit it pretty regularly, especially if I can get HQ out...
In a non BYOT, I'd have all those, plus Ghost Rider on the 8.

Or, you know, I'd build VU/Statix. :)
I have never, in any Statix build, used Entangle.
I agree that hitting an early drop is important, but for me that's just because Mobilize won't work until someone's out there.
I've never used Entangle in a Statix build either, but boy, does it work. It's great to exhaust U-Go Girl to lock down a 3-drop before sacking her to get Zeitgeist running. Imagine my surprise that exhaust = better stall. (Who knew?)
True. I just don't know how I'd alter my build for that. Plus, I generally have a 1drop at around 7/8 by the 4, which is generally enough (with Dead Weight/Acro) to stonewall them. I've even been known to keep the low drop to KO a 4/5 to get the endurance gain from HQ.
I'll have to think about Entangle.
I really do like the flexibility of Phat though. Granted you could get your 21/21 Phat Mi-Mo'ed.....but still, boosted Phat on the 10? Hi. Lar. E. Ous. :)
I may be biased against Phat. Back in the day, I played against Fantastic Fun and even though he had the stats of a 5-drop, Thing kept KO'ing Fantasticars and stunning him (since they both cost 1.) It was REALLY frustrating and made me realize just how fragile the guy is. I'm sure Black Widow knocking out a 5-drop would do the same.
Plus, with no real draw ability, hand-size starts to drain, so pitching a card to get a vanilla drop is painful, especially when X-Statix can stand to miss a drop with the right # of Dead Weights.
Oh, and I'm going to kick myself if I can't get Apoc off the board on turn 8 to bring out Imperiex on turn 9, especially since I'm not running Onslaught. How I wish I could just run Ghost Rider/Professor X/Imperiex like I want.
You know, I have generally found Imperiex to be a "win more" card so I stopped using him, even in my VU/Statix build. I just use Onslaught at the 8, and go from there. I've been known to replay Axel on 8 to get some endurance back and maybe a card.
Pitching a card to get a vanilla drop? With Mobilize? I'm confused...
I don't deny that Phat is fragile, but he's also saved my @$$ more than once by boosting up to help me out. It's a personal choice. I've had good luck with him, so I used him as an anytime card. I wouldn't ever search him out, and I'd only boost him out if it helped. Sometime he doesn't, so he sits there for me to ditch for an Spin Doctoring...
