Tons of people play this game because it has comic book characters beating each other up. Others could care less about the characters. If you lose one segment, I doubt the game would be very sustainable.
I'd say you are wrong fine sirs!
If i had Launch-Pad McQuack kicking your but and a pt called the "The Terrible Trio" with Huey, Duey and Lewy on it, I'd be the happiest man alive.
Duck Tales FTW!
Launch Pad could totally kick the #### out of Punisher! He'd simply crash into him!

Well, obviously there are some people that currently play the game that would find interest in new IPs. :)
But I got into this game because of the comic book characters. I stayed because of the engine. However, many people stay because they love the characters, and find the engine difficult and unforgiving. We'd lose all those players if the game switched to something non-comic book, and I'm not sure the players Vs. would gain could outbalance the loss.
Anachronism is pretty fun actually, but it offers a lot of non-nazi characters to choose from, and I would guess the nazi characters never made it across the boarder (if there were any I don't recall now). I've got a whole bunch of heroes for it myself we buy them whenever we see them priced to move.

I hear you Ekin, but tell me: would'nt you play the game of VS if the next set was say the Incredibles or maybe even Sin City/Judge Dredd. Conan/Hellboy also comes to mind.
I realize that the majority of us came aboard probably because we wanted to pit Marvel against DC but, we are all here still because of the unique complexity that the VS game engine provides to us. Its the ability to somehow gain a mastery of this crazy game that also keeps me going. One can't help but think that if I could just play with Mickey Mouse or Donald (I rule with Donald: they don't know), then I would own/pawn everyone that I faced. It becomes never ending in a good way because you purpose yourself to get better. Somehow this next deck construction is what's going to win it all for me. By that time you don't really care if it's Marvel or DC, you just want to win and that's it.
Oh, I think you misunderstand me. I really enjoy the game, and I'd at least stick around as long as there were new sets being printed. I'm not speaking for myself, I'm speaking for people I know that I think would stop if they stopped with the big name comic book characters. Some of them MIGHT stick around if UDE went with more independent titles, but I think the overall Vs. market would take too much of a hit.
But on the flip side we could take it to France where 95% of the population would empty their wallets and bank accounts and ask us to take whatever we want without opposition.

Ah, I understand you better now.
I just want to see VS go to the next level: card sets that depend less on the obviously constrained Marvel/DC contracts and more on publicly recognized heros and villians.
Dracula, Frankenstein and the Werewolf are great examples of IP that's non comic book based but, would most assuredly have a world wide appeal.
Now, I still see the need for the continuance of serving up Marvel and DC character themed sets but, I don't want to feel as though I absolutely have to have them for the game of VS to survive. No, I don't feel that way about there inclusion in the game of VS anymore. I don't know... I just think our game deserves better than what they are recieving from the big 2. In the past we've laid alot at the feet of UDE for the success/failure of VS and have excused all other parties. However, when you think about: it was'nt Marvel or DC that gave us the game of VS...
There are just a few obstacles here we need to think about:
1. UDE is in the business of making money, will any of those IPs create more sales than Marvel/DC characters?
2. The engine is suited for an older more sophisticated crowd. I know some of you have children who play VS quite easily, but for every 1 of those geniuses... there's probably 100 YGO kids who can't understand shared turn initiative... or formation... or the chain.
3. As lebeau said... the term "VS" already has some history to it. Why do you think UDE tried to do another Marvel game with a totally different engine? To get retailers to try it. The promotion even said it was NOT a VS System product (great advertising huh?).
In all the above cases, what it comes down to is "limited number of players". As much as UDE wanted to make a "tournament game" similar to Magic... the bottom line is still mass market sales.
Take your emotional ties to VS out of the equation. If you're on the management team that decides what UDE is going to do in the next few years... how does VS figure into that?
I am hopeful that UDE will continue to make sets for VS... it's just that all these factors make it highly unlikely they will reuse the engine for any future properties they may come across. If anything, they will recycle the WoW engine (although that also has some of its own issues).
There are at least 3 threads that are covering this same subject in varying degrees... like everyone else... I also have ideas that I've been working on for quite a while... regardless of what UDE does with VS.
If you are interested and have experience in any of the following categories:
1. Game engine design
2. Graphic art (stu?)
3. Comic book history
4. Manufacturing/packaging
5. Marketing (yeah... kariggi... I'll talk to you about this in person)
... please email me at the SoCal VS website in my sig. But only if you are serious and can spend the time and money.
Why money? Well... that's when the talk becomes the walk... but not a single dollar will be collected unless all parties involved have agreed to a gameplan. This is no "donate before you know what's happening" endeavor... this is a serious plan of action that requires a few dedicated people. I have my doubts... but maybe talking to some like-minded individuals will make it more feasible.
Crap! Erick is getting serious, and I was all ready to relagate vs to the status of Risk/Monopoly/Every other game I enjoy and play when others want to play, but otherwise leave in my closet while I attend the more important priorities in life (family, work, writing.)

I hear you man...
I just wanted to point out that outside of licensing the VS game engine from UDE, smacking on a new name and claiming it to be another TCG, I won't be looking to play another form of TCG related to comic book heros/villians.
I simply enjoy the structure of the game...
We are in a strained economy and with times being rough right now, I can imagine that that's one of the main reasons why there has been no announcement: it's just smarter to wait and see...
MEV seems to be selling well and with alittle more careful handling, I don't see why VS can't navigate through it's slump just like Pokemon and such. According to the reports of others, Pokemon has had a resurgence in sales and players as of late ( certainly at the World tournament).
