I totally respect what some of you are trying to do by putting together the Jedi council of fan-run organized play. But please don't tell me what my priority should be.
People have been faving fun with fantasy cards since the game began. The fact that Upper Deck is no longer making cards shouldn't impact that in any way.
If you don't want to participate in fan-made cards right now, don't. The rest of us are going to continue doing what we've been doing because we enjoy doing it.
Fan-making sets is one thing. That's fine. Trying to say what should be played / released is totally another.
There's a good group trying to keep the game together, ensuring fan-made sets are properly balanced so they can be announced as "official" tourney sets. Then there's randomly throwing out cards / sets that have no aspect of balance to them and telling people to start playing them.
My point is this: if you want to keep making sets, it's fine; but when you start threads like this, outside of the "fantasy set" area, and start preemptively announcing those, that's going to cause problems. It'll ultimately lead to a breakdown of, the game structure; and as much as I'm giving away my cards (to locals, so don't send me wish lists) / disinvolving myself in most things VS related, deep down I still really do want things to succeed for them. So that's the reason I argue fervently against threads like this one and anything that tchalla posts... out of a will for a group to make VS succeed.
I guess I just don't see how a thread announcing the coming of fan sets will "ultimately lead to a breakdown of the game structure". It never has in the past.
Should this be under the fantasy card forum? Probably. But everything's getting posted under General Discussion these days.
I say be happy there are people who still care enough to bother announcing anything. Some of these people may just be the future of Vs.
Bottom line is we need to be very careful when we are making our tourneys as to what fan sets [if ever or any] are legal.
There also needs to be a sense of communal acceptance, otherwise we get people asking why one fan set is legal and not another. What I'm thinking right now is if 'official fan sets' came from one group of people, then that might work.
I never intended for the discussion of what "Fan based sets to anticipate" to become anything but productive. Therefore, I'll ask that everyone please not post anymore in this thread at least until the MODS move this whole matter too the Fantasy set room.
I will say that it is great and gives a good feeling to know that there ARE at least 11 sets to look forward to---I can't wait Dave.
If it 's okay with you guys, I just want to say that I would love to (how shall I say this) see, print out and play with a physical DCU v.2 set especially if that particular revision included effects dealing with Willpower.
Nevertheless, I hope to have this set floating throughout the Fan based VS Hobby League by September or November. No hurry: play test and work out the kinks. Submit it to a review board because that makes sense ( I'm with you guys on that).
Thereafter, when the community has agreed to accept it into the fold as legal or such for Hobby league and whatever tournament structure that we finally agree upon: I will do my part to play the h#$l out it.
Sets that I had not even thought about... Love it.
I am working on a Final Crisis set. I realize others are doing this, but I am going to finish mine and post it for all to see and comment on. I hope to be done in 2 weeks or so.
Me and my renegade band of DCU fans are about half done our set, titled "DC: Brave and the Bold", or DBB for short.
The set will be a mix of new feature and refeatures, comprised of the following teams:
Emerald Archers
Intergang
Young Justice
Marvel Family
Metal Men
Outsiders
Deathstroke
Secret Six
Royal Flush Gang
Fearsome Five
Checkmate
The main theme of DBB is small teams that mesh well with other team, both inside the set and from existing sets. As well, each team is only alloted 25 "slots" for their characters, equipment, locations and plot twists. This finally allows small teams to be included in a major set, without being shunted off to the back and forgotten.
Some of the unique aspects of the set so far are the keywords Infiltrate and Wound, and the expanding upon the "Magic" Plot Twist aspect, to include Magic Locations and Equipment.
I think you guys are talking about apples and oranges.
Dave is right in that the vast majority of the fan-made projects above could not feasibly be considered for "official" play.
Lebeau, meanwhile, rightfully points out that fantasy card creators are just continuing to do what they have always done and most, if not all, aren't too concerned about the idea of their cards being "legal" in tournaments.
Personally, I'd just like to see good quality (balanced) fan-made sets released every so often ... something lebeau and friends have shown a capacity to do with DCU and hopefully the upcoming DFC sets. My local playing group can and will decide if it's okay to use these cards in our tournaments for ourselves.
I think the best way forward would be to just let the inmates continue to run the fantasy-card asylum, since they are having fun and will do so no matter what you or me say anyway.
Once some fan-structure starts to solidify, however, maybe fan-set creators who wish to do so could submit them for consideration for legality ... that might help encourage more playtesting and balancing of fan sets among those who would actually get a kick out of other people playing their fantasy cards.
Strategically, some of those creators might eventually take part in a more organised approach to coordinating set creation (i.e. alternating DC and Marvel as in the past, and which affiliations/storylines to focus on) ... since if five different "The Brave and Bold" sets are produced only one of them could seriously be considered for legality and if each of those designers think they are making "the next official fan-created set" then there's going to be a lot of disappointed people not to mention wasted energy.
A lot of the above assumes that, as a community, we will ever be ready to or even want to have fan-made cards legal for tournament play. Shrug.
