I finally have an update from his wife: "Duane is off the ventilator now and doing well with that. We are in hopes he will be out of the ICU and into the rehab section later this week to continue to work on his mobility. Still a long road ahead but he is grateful for all the well wishes from you all that I have passed along."
That's great news... thank you

Positive news - thanks for the update. It will be a long road but I know from the experience of two people very close to me who have suffered similar, that full recoveries are eminently possible (as in both cases cited). Sending positive vibes to Duane. :-)
I have another update on Duane, aka TheFreak, from his wife. Duane is now in the rehab phases of recovery. After his first week he was able to take his first assisted steps. He will still be in there for another month or so but overall he is doing great. He is very dedicated to get back to his normal life. He says that he misses all of his friends and the game. He will be back as soon as he can.

Wonderful! We'll all be here waiting for him!

Sorry to hear about this. If you don't have life insurance (and there are policies with living benefits that you can tap into), then get it. The younger you are, the less expensive it will be. I am a licensed insurance person, but even if you don't get it from me, get it from someone. Having to beg, borrow, and do gofundme sucks. And yes, I realize that this post may sound opportunistic, but it is reality. If you think you are invincible to strokes, disease, etc, then you aren't doing your family any favors.
And in this instance, if he had a living benefits policy, he would have been able to take out (on average) 50% of the policy which would help him in his rehab, etc. Most insurance only pays if, well, if you die...
Do what you will with the info, but seriously, take a step back and think about what would happen (especially if you have a family) if this happened to you.
Hello all!! Thanks for the well wishes and donations. I'm doing better. I'm in rehab now with a discharge date of the 16th. Still can't see straight, and right side is still wonky. But I'm doing well enough to go outpatient. Father in law is making the house enough to use for a guy like me. Soon enough I'll be able to properly run events again.
Thank you all!
Contrary to popular belief, I do know what I'm doing
