I'd probably just sit him down and tell him why what he did was wrong so he understands. Maybe find some news stories of other kids doing that and bad things happening to them and sharing it with him so he knows what could happen. Then let him know what he should do next time.
I'm across the river from Fargo, North Dakota. The metropolitan area is about 209k. So, technically, a city, but, y'know... I'm from the East Coast. Calling this a city is just another way of saying it's the biggest place between Minneapolis and Seattle.
But I grew up in a town where our entire high school was 400 students covering three towns; here, each -grade- hs more students than that, and that's just for one of the several highschools... so it's much different from where I grew up.
Wow, not too far from me, that's a bit frightening.

Here's the thing... he's very... let's say, 'advanced' for his age, in his understanding of the world. He knows there's bad people out there. He actually likes watching shows like SVU because "Yeah, bad stuff happens, but they almost always get the bad guys in the end." He knows there's people who do bad things to kids, and drunk drives, and all kinds of stuff like that.
And in a way... I'm proud of him for leaving situation he wasn't comfortable in, even if it was a really stupid reason (Seriously, he's just fine in -our- basement). So I'm glad to know that if he's ever in a situtation where he wants to come home, he's not gonna let "Oh, it's after midnight" be a problem.
And telling him he should've called first just got "So you're going to buy me a cell phone so I can call you next time?" Cheeky little monkey...

They have those cheap phones that only call your phone, granted this doesn't seem like something that happens a lot and warrants it. Sort of seems like he may have planned it out to try to get a cell phone. Also pretty sure his friend has a house phone.
Finally finishing american, horror story, the first few episodes are the best, but its a good psychological horror
Will stick around for another season
