All of these are great points but, a better idea is to reveal this is how the heroes fell and have it pave the way for OLD MAN LOGAN.
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
We saw Hulk destroy Stark's bunker, most of The Avengers are presumed dead or trapped outside the defense barrier, and NYC's only source of light driving back the darkness is sputtering. Now, obviously we can't have the Old Man Logan future happen because a LOT of titles would get cancelled so was Morales not killing Cap the turning point to prevent Logan's future.
Didn't the flashback from Old Man Logan show Red Skull stand triumphantly over Captain America before killing him?
That and, you know, the whole major bit about Logan (not X-23, not already old Logan, but original, classic-style Wolverine) being responsible for the death of most of the X-Men.
STAR TREK TOS WITH EVIL KIRK FROM THE TRANSPORTER ACCIDENT DID IT BETTER.
But "good" Kirk never actually met "Bad" Kirk.
Though, there was that episode where some guy & his evil counterpart kept crossing from one universe to another and his "bad" version and he ended up in the middle and were said to be at each other throats for all eternity trapped in that place.
Still better then this Hydra-Cap story. And there is still the "Epilogue" issue that's coming out.

Alternative Factor. Second-to-last episode of S1. Great episode too.
"But what of Lazarus?"

Yes, yes it was. Smells of a back-pedal rewrite if you ask me
I didn't. Which issue? Or I guess what's the explanation?

Madame Hydra/Elisa Sinclair used the Cosmic Cube to alter Mjolnir's enchantment, changing it to:
"WHOSOEVER HOLDS THIS HAMMER,
IF HE BE STRONGEST,
SHALL POSSESS THE POWER OF
HYDRA"
(Where's The Hulk when you need him?)
HYDRA Cap went to use it against Cosmic Cube Cap & could no longer pick it up as the enchantment had reverted back to normal. CC Cap then walloped HYDRA Cap with it.
Cosmic Cube Cap is Kobik's memories of the pre-HYDRA Cap given form...cue Pinocchio quote!

That's... pretty stupid. But sadly, not without precedent that someone could do that with enough magickal power. Of course, it was pretty stupid before too.

The Skrulls did melt down and remake Stormbreaker into a weapon for their Asgardian Super-Skrull during Secret Invasion. Of course, that was also painfully dumb.
This sounds way worse.

Unless it means who has the strongest will,I dunno.
This may be unpopular, but I still love Nick Spencer. The guy who wrote that Jimmy Olsen story at DC, Ant-Man at Marvel, and The Fix is still OK in my book, even if this particular story fell flat. I even liked most of the Sam Wilson Cap comic.
He wrote Secret Empire under the auspices of a company who has long-ago decided that their bread and butter is wholly dependent upon convoluted, over-extended crossover events. From what I can tell, it's expected that one title or another is going to step up every year to walk us through some ordeal, never again letting us get comfortable with any kind of status quo. Spencer tried and struck out, but he's hardly the first good writer to do so. These days, as a default, I just assume Marvel crossover events are going to be bad, which gives me a little room to be charmed when someone can actually pull one of them off. I hoped that would be the case with Nick Spencer, but even as a fan of his, I just got bored after a few issues and wanted it to be over. Like most folks, I didn't really feel like what we were drug through was worth it.
If this story had been a tiny, 2 or 3 part storyline, kept within Steve's own title, with a heads-up acknowledgement that it was an alternate reality or a temporary glitch in the timeline, I think it maybe would have been tolerable.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
