City Champs. How amazing is it to become the champion of your entire city for just a few bucks entry?
Seriously though, as I look around the Realms... all I can see are threads talking about their upcoming Champs, reports on previous ones, strategies for them... I haven't seen this much buzz about anything before. Even the previews/launch of MTU didn't generate this many threads, and that was an amazing event in and of itself.
I got to play in one. I came in fourth; my best finish ever in a VS tournament. I can't wait for the next ones.
The way that you can spend hours on a website talking about the game...not even playing it...the amount of time it consumes from your life when you are not playing it...
Thats iffy. Best game ever implies that no other game has a system that works better than the rest.
I'm not sure thats too true. Formation complexities, lack of sideboard, one game system are all things that have some positives but more negitive. Gameplay wise, I think the trophy goes to The Spoils, which works like magic, with the problems removed (But hey, bad art means bad game, Amirite?)
But I like VS system as a whole the most. It has the best people, for the most part, as well as spreding good old comic lore so people who don't read comic books as much as they would like, means that they can now talk more about comics.
Plus, every now and then, I get a good laugh out of here.
For me, the best part is playing as my favorite characters, and, of course, making insane team-up decks that do bizarre and unexpected things. If I had a fetish for elves, I'd play Magic - but, nope, I love me my superheroes. And, of course, no other game would let me play as Zatanna
Random Punks. Without that format, I would not be writing an article that includes sexy photos of a line of twelve Madrox in the front row exhausted with a Rocket Racer skateboarding across the back of their skulls followed by an Infestation monstrosity leading into a Last Laugh from the fallen angels partying underground with Ratcatcher.
I messed around with MTGO recently... I hear your gasps of dismay, but I swear I was only there to get directions on how to get away from there.
...
Actually, I was interested because I crave high-level competition, and living in South Africa, the only way I can get that is likely gonna be online. But then I actually tried playing Magic (used to play, years ago) and I realised what a horrible game it is.
I was left thinking, "what, seriously? I have to draw specific resource cards? And we take an entire turn each, where the opponent does next to nothing? You declare attackers this turn, so I don't?"
Granted I was rusty, but I used to really enjoy MTG.. and I think the reason I don't anymore is that I've been playing a vastly superior game. Seriously, VS isn't that hard to learn, not after you've played a game like STCCG (1st ed) which was my main game for years. And I taught that game to loads of people.
PS. Formation complexities came up as a drawback? The formation stuff is genuis! It's a step that you don't HAVE to know much about to do, but which richly rewards skill. Isn't that the holy grail of gaming?
