I remember thinking that the idea of overcoming the enormous energy requirement of powered armor by using a pilot that in fact IS the power source was an interesting idea.
Of all the Ultraforce members Jimmy is the one that I had the least feeling about, he had kind of that cocky hero lacking self awareness that is hesitantly entering maturity.
The Suit Is Just A Giant Surge Suppressor: This is both comic accurate and a HUGE deterrent to Outwitting Jimmy.

Seeing Hawk finally defeat NM-E is a great conclusion to his arc, finally confronting the LITERAL boogeyman that has haunted him since the destruction of the Squad was pretty epic.
For reasons that are pretty obvious Hawk always reminded me of classic Luke Cage...and not just because he went through costumes like Kleenex!
Jumpstart Effect: That is a neat little movement special that not only makes Hawk dynamic, but provides Hardcase with a very effective pseudo-Impervious.
Everyone's A Critic!: Hawk is just going to be far, far harder to put down that he would first appear from a glance at his dial.....which is pretty much Hardcase's entire wheelhouse.

wholeheartedly agree. it was a great reveal and an interesting hook that parsed him from being another iron man wannabe. that and taking more seriously the corporate sponsorship angle was interesting. like prime, he was a hotheaded teenager (though older) and you could see that was written well into his impulsiveness and overconfidence. i REALLY liked him having the self-awareness to seek out bob and put himself under his wing to learn the ropes and be a better prototype. their dynamic was awesome.
i wanted the surge-suppressor surprise (say that 5 times fast) to be te feature for the dial. it designed itself and, as you pointed out, makes for a great outwit deterrent. especially if you don't take out that perplex, it can stack fast . full dial gets standard range bits while the exp dial gets more aggressive, more foolhardy, and shows that headstrong 19 year old wanting to tangle up.
but the corporate business was an idea i had for booster gold and it definitely fits here with jimmy's role. and i hope it definitely makes him stand out amongst an ocean of iron man dials. using the marvel ta of choice as the brand identity for the match is super potent but hopefully fun. "today's match is brought to you by the defenders. remember the defenders for all your business needs" and like a good corporate sponsorship, we can't allow any competitors in on it, gotta stay on brand, so he wipes your whole force's TAs but he proliferates the one choice and there's tons of TAs out there that work best when unified. that alone can make him a big asset. but i didn't want it to be alone. so that singular click of that topdial sp is meant to be a bit of corporate battle, the cola wars in play on the roll of an imperv die . but to offset the potency and keep it real, he gets no defense bonus in hindering (and a penalty against close attacks) because he's supposed to be promoting that image and you can't get a good look from the cameras if you're putting the product in bushes, my friend

tom was my boy. i enjoyed his book the most and as their main guy (if not the obvious flagship that prime was propped up as) he did his job. he pulled the team together and he was absolutely the glue that got all those macho '90s hotheads to stop posturing because he was the genuine alpha without trying to be

oh it was awesome. very cathartic. and the breakthru (pun intended) that enabled him to smash rex mundi by discovering and then hacking his own nanobots? wow. i almost gave all the ultras the robot kw for it, but thought it'd muddle things too much.
and btw, no wonder he got ignominiously put on a bus after that. he'd grown too powerful to continue under normal capacity, sadly. he got hosed pretty hard and his return to then be put in eternal conflict had an air of classic heroic sacrifice but he deserved better. he never got to see the kid choice was pregnant with :/
for his dial, i wanted him to be effective despite the relative simplicity his dial would demand. his powers weren't crazy (initially...). strong, excellent jumper, potent senses that were a bigger deal than most remember. i put that all in there, i parsed his defenses so that taking one out wouldn't trip him up entirely and his back dial sp being outwit-proof was both a meta-gag for the flavor text and also a take that to his battle against the outwitter of outwitters, his archnemesis, rex mundi. with a lot of leadership to cement his roll and some crazy mobility on his flying leap that will also give him an attack bonus to offset those standard starting values, i tried to slip some surprises into the ol' bird. whenever i think of hardcase, i remember the cartoon intro and him flying all over the place with his super bounding, so the big up to his mobility for the flying leap is my ode to my memory of nostalgia here

Even though Topaz didn't get a lot of story development she was illustrated by George "I make EVERYTHING awesome" Perez and if that isn't enough to make her epic I don't know what is.
I remember the first time as a kid I read a Perez comic and it changed the way I viewed the medium for the rest of my life.
My favorite Write/Illustrator is Jim Starlin, but for me, panel for panel nobody surpasses Perez. Not Kirby, not Adams, not Ross, not Gibbons, at least not for me.
Topaz is absolutely deadly form from her first click to her last and I only wish she'd been allowed to be the Amazon she was clearly intended to be ( I guess George still had some affection for his Wonder Woman run eh? ).
I imagine she and Diana would have gotten along just fine.
Defender Of Gwendor: when she charges in on click three ( unless your opponent hasn't been so intemperate as to close with Topaz mistaking her for a ranged only piece ) and wallops the heck out of the enemy they will remember her staff across their backside.
Those last two clicks were she just doesn't quit and can catch you coming and going are going to play just fine with me.

perez is amazing, and he did fantastic work for both marvel (and by retroactive extension, the ultraverse) and dc. avengers vs jla is truly gorgeous, not to mention your aforementioned ww and his seminal work on titans. but get him in a room with busiek and *low whistle*. those 2 knew how to cull the best from one another. gotta give it to a writer that has the wherewithal to let perez draw panels of tons of characters narratively infused with continuity and obscurity
topaz was a neat gal. clearly wonder woman in all but name, but also visually and powerfully distinctive in more than superficial means. focusing on her power staff (of ill-explanation ) was a neat distinction in her combat style and abilities. so that's where i went with the dial. she's got a melee weapon that can fire powerful bolts so i wanted her to be aggressively adept (hey, it's the '90s ) in both close and range combat. putting that long string of charge into her sp cleared her up to have the printed rs that isn't really the focus (not with top dial ew), but is a thankful option so your opponent can't just pigeonhole her. that full-dial ps also helped to sell the dial in being flexible, especially on the end dial when her dmg drops modestly for the ol doubletap at close or big boom at range options made more distinctive.
her mid dial is where i wanted her to sing. she's lost her big reducers and her rs, now's where she's focused on close combat and her attack is way up because some man sullied her with contact, so this misandrist monarch is letting fly a flurry of strikes, that coupled with reversal and the presence of her sisters-doing-it-for-ourselves empower will mean she's ramping up her dmg output. even if that hubba-hubba-hunk hardcase is the one getting empowered . i saw those furtive glances, topaz, i read those thought bubbles, we all knew where you were going with that before the ultraverse got flipped on its head. it was a tale of star-crossed ponytails ah, the '90s

Teaching Ultras Is My Business
As a character Emma fros....I mean Contrary seems familiar somehow.
I tend to like Contrary more for her lack of White Queen baggage...and the fact she seemed less across the board malevolent than Frost.
Freex was one of my favorite Ultraverse titles so I got a little more background on Contrary than most Ultraverse readers and I have to admit when it came time to assemble the Ult-vengers I was surprised to see her there. But you have to admit that she opened up some narrative opportunities.
It's A Thin Line Between Pleasure And Pain, You Know: with her extreme ( X-TREEEEEME! ) flexibility I don't think I'd want to run an Ultraforce team without her.
Red: plays up the manipulative seductress ( she wasn't SUBTLE ) handing out Support and providing Leadership, when she isn't deviously manipulating your opponents to best effect.
Blue: welllll now you've done it, you've ticked Contrary off and out comes the psychic whip! Psychic Blast, Mastermind ( with all those great damage sponges on Ultraforce! ) and Shape Change, married with across the dial Stealth makes Contrary awfully tough for such a squishy girl!
Her ability to flip dial sides at any point in her turn is going to be key to getting the most out of her and I can't help but think that you were playing off of her title "Contrary" when you decided not to tie it to either the ending or beginning of her turn.
I Walk That Line Like A High-Wire Queen!: now that is a fun Mind Control special that has a sting in its tail for an unwary opponent.
"Oh you can't break reducers anymore.....tooooo bad"
....And I mean Perez has a thing for long hair and it shows in Contrary. Just look at that sculpt choice, she looks like some wicked siren with her hair floating in the surf right before she lures some poor Greek sailor to his tragic death.
I can't help but feel that besides Emma, George was channeling a bit of Wanda into his Contrary interpretation.....and we know how he feels about her.

Contrary was definitely a curve ball. The obvious mantra passed for personal reasons (and besides doubling down on the warrior chick would've been a misstep) but getting the shadowy gal most folk didn't even know about was kinda the antagonist in freex? Real gutsy move. She was liquid drama, though, and perhaps that's why she got in. Narrative opportunities, indeed. Just a shame she got retconned before her master plan, let alone story, got to unfold
For Emma frost's contrary's dial, I had to embrace the combination of her name and diametric powerset to pull the internal sf. Letting you control her dial felt authentic to the character, too. A-dial is the manipulator with the support to get her allies close. B-dial is the combative option with bite and stacked defenses, but no less manipulative in that she's turning it on those close allies. I had fun with this one, the mirroring layout and the stepped dark blue powers, the consistent stealth across the board, and I had to go lazy slouch on the couch sculpt, it was too contrary not to. Perez knocked it out of the park with the art. You can see some of wanda's gypsy look in that art, too.
High-wire queen, beyond being fun flavor, is an attempt to sneak some not-perplex into the dial in an unconventional way. Getting to key up her poor target to betray their friends then sap them in the post-mc wash is the meanest emotional whiplash I could conceive of her inflicting on someone

the team jubilee. i'm not even going to strikethru the statement . she fairly lampshaded it herself when talking to the president with her rs flavor text
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
oof, yeah, it was brutal. all the more so for how graphically executed by perez. and they even went there on the kids cartoon, too. i really think she was made to die. her career was so short and got elevated to the big leagues almost immediately, i think she was created to be the tear-jerker team-builder to get the meatheads to work together and have their "for frodo" moment. she was spunky and had some shades of shadowcat/nightcrawler dynamic going on with ghoul. and ghoul did make the whole affair seem preplanned in how hard he was foreshadowing. but man, did she go out like a champ. even knowing where it was going and remembering her doom, seeing her leap like mad from missile to missile to defuse them was really heroic
so i had to do her right. while this set has a lot of anti-equipment/object effects (either i must've been in a mood or the subthemes kept pointing me in that direction), it was too key to her story not to play it up here, too.
her dial is fairly bare, when you think about it. her basically just calls in a vanilla pog and she's got 1 click of an sp. so that up top emphasis on the control, terrain and support is integral to her job as the team's differently-designed role in kw full of brawlers and blasters. it is a fairly monochromatic dial, but truthfully that was a side effect of the power selection that fit instead of vice-versa. happy coincidence, we say.
i was this close to making her a promoter chase for the team, but she was too integral to the story and the founding roster for me to do y'all dirty and make her hard to get. besides, she was more active in the thick of it and while i could've made it work, it wasn't the right fit for her
