We’re halfway through this bad boy, so this seems like as good a time as ever to really hash it out so far. You’ve got J Michael Straczynski writing and Chris Weston covering art chores. You’ve got a twelve issue mini (MAXI) series about twelve Golden Age Marvel (Timely) characters sent to the present day. And you’ve got one of the best books on the market right now. My guess is that this is what reading All Star Superman must be like...
PUNY HUMANS MUST READ NOW!!! HULK WILL SMASH FACE UNLESS YOU BUY COMIC!!!
Cough! Agh! Oh man! Sorry about that folks but that dialogue is infectious. First off, let me show you what had me on the ground laughing. Click the link if you are ok with a spoiler...
Review: Thunderbolts #121 by Bruce Castle This is a splash of intellectualism to compensate for my rather unintelligent review of Hulk. Although, I guess this isn’t that philosophical either. Ah never mind, I like fun comics! So what!
Whew! The wait is over! Ok, so it wasn’t that bad of a wait because there are much better comics to keep you satisfied, but the wait is over all the same. Well this is the other Jeph Loeb title coming out now so of course this is another title getting lots of flak. Jeph Loeb is the comic aficionado’s whipping boy. However, unlike Hulk, I can kind of board that Loeb hating bandwagon on this one. The main theme of this comic for me was-what?
I was worried that my love of barbarian comics would wither away and die after the cancellation of the epic Conan book from Darkhorse.* Boy was I wrong! Steve (Desiato) already gave a pretty strong review of this booklast week, so don’t expect the same from me. I’m here to show you the awesome art and tone of this book in the hope it will convince the uninitiated to give it a shot.
Whew. Let me start by saying that this is probably the hardest comic to read and especially to write a review for. But I love it for that! It’s one of the most intelligent comics I’ve ever read. I have to give major props for any book that makes me want to read it 3 or 4 times the first day I get it.
Bruce Castle Archives: All Star Batman and Robin HC
Whew. This one’s going to be a doosey. This is the comic no one likes. First off, if you didn’t know, this is written by Frank Miller and drawn by Jim Lee. This HC is 25 bucks and contains the first 9 issues. 240 pgs for 25 bucks is a good deal, so at least there’s that. This HC also features an introduction from the editor. This is pretty funny. Unless you are new to comics or you’ve been living in a hole (or both), you’ll know that everyone hates this comic. So, it’s funny that the editor’s entire introduction barely mentions this comic at all. He’s mainly talking about the creator’s previous award winning achievements. Not this comic. At the end, he says, “They know what they’re doing. Trust me!” I just found that kind of humorous.
Review: Conan: The Cimmerian & Skaar: Son of Hulk!
by Bruce Castle
This issue was awesome! A coming of age story with monsters, dragons, and gore oh my! I didn’t pick up this issue when it came out. It had sold out at my local comic shop. Thankfully, a friend of mine is an employee there and he had set aside a copy for himself but decided he didn’t really want it. Well, luckily when I went to pick up my copy of the Planet Hulk HC, he asked if I had picked up Skaar yet. He said a kid came in earlier and wanted a copy and he considered giving it to him, but that kid isn’t friends with the guy and I am so ha ha little kid! Ok, maybe too much barbarian reading today has turned me into a jerk.
