So, as I had two and half minutes free, I decided to watch the trailer for 50 Shades of Grey.
It is quite possibly the worst trailer I've ever seen. This is not an exaggeration. It is dreck.
Like... I was *willing* to give it the benefit of the doubt. Anything that gets housewives hot-and-bothered, I'm all for. But holy hell, it looks horrible. Casting, dialogue, score, shots. This is what fans were waiting for?

Keep in mind how many people loved the Twlight saga.
It's terrible movies like those though that make me appreciate all of the comic book movies out there, and by comparison, can make even Ghost Rider movies watchable (you can deny it all you want, but I'm sure you'd rather reach for Ghost Rider or F4 before Twilight).
Which reminds me: why are all the terrible superhero movies from Fox?
BTW, I finally caved and called my LCBS to ask about "Afterlife with Archie". Apparently the first 5 issues are in TPB format and #6 came out not too long ago. I asked the store guy to put them in my saver box. I had no idea that this was a thing, but I am intrigued. I'll have a look and see what the shouting's all about!
I need to get the first five in TPB. Didn't see it at the comic shop, but my FLGS actually gets trades in a lot, so they might have it.

This about sums it up. Gratuitous weak stuff at its finest. It'll do well because its essentially housewife porn, but that's sad. If they want a better weird sex movie, watch Secretary. Not an awesome movie, but definitely watchable.

You guys will have to give me a recommendation. I recently started the Dresden Files and since you mal asked for him in one of my mafia games, I thank you for the recommendation and apologize for butchering the character to high heaven. I'm tearing through the books at a pretty good pace.

I didn't read the first cycle yet, but #6 was really amazing writing and art.

Yes, yes, he is. Should really do a Dresden Files mafia.

I actually read AwA #6, and I gotta say that as an HPL fan they got me hook, line, and sinker. Seriously well written, in the fine style of the old EC horror comics. I am getting the TPB tomorrow, after which I will give it a full review but so far this title is leaps and bounds ahead of anything from Marvel that I am reading these days (Amazing Spider-Man and FF).

Suffice it to say that after all of the hype I tried reading 50 Shades and could not make it past the first few chapters. I have read other erotica such as Story of O and East of Eden, both well-written novels, and enjoyed them just fine. Even the tongue-in-cheek S&M Sleeping Beauty trilogy is better than the tripe of 50 Shades.
It must be that the crappy housewife porn genre has no appeal for me. Then again, I also read the first few pages of Twilight and it was like hearing someone scrape sharp fingernails across a blackboard. I'll take inferior literature of a different type any day of the week. It's beyond me that not only did Twight get a series of 4 movies, but that they're already talking about releasing a remake of the first. Boggles the mind, it truly does.

Also got AwA #6. Damn, that 6 page preview for the Sabrina solo series really took a dark turn. I never expected to ever read an Archie comic, but I am definitely interested in this series and will track down the issues I missed.

As mentioned, #1-5 are all collected in a TPB, unless you want the actual back issues. I also read the Sabrina series preview and more than likely will wind up buying it, too - although it does not take place in the same "reality" as AwA. I think that this is the first time ever that I have had an Archie comic as part of my LCBS saver box.

If I can get individual issues, I'd rather have those. Not a fan of standard, non collectors edition trades. Being a modern series, it shouldn't be too hard.

I saw most of them at my Not-so-FLCS, so I imagine they are out there. What was really weird is that I only could get the variant cover of #6. Not that I care one way or another, but it just struck me as strange.

Yep. There's simply no comparison with 50 Shades, and I find it's popularity surprising.
And I will auto-sign up for a Dresden mafia.
