Also meant to say this: I blame most of the kills by the mafia (at least my early one) on the fact that the mafia got a power cop. Why not us? Power cop would be pretty good!
Experimentation! Trying to balance out misdirections, info gathering, and protection. A little more difficult, since I couldn't have a vig, bus driver, or mafia doc. I'd probably go with a different combo of roles if I did this again, but I also have to say I don't mind some rules being less strong (sorry charles). That's something that comes down to preference, I think.
Yeah, honestly I do think that was part of the problem with this game - I like the idea, but I'm not sure the Realms is really up for it at this point. We've got a decent little crowd, but a lot of newer folks, and even regular vanilla is tricky. Throw in the wrinkles for this game, and it does make some sense that people didn't really know what to do.
That said, there's the beginnings of some interesting theory discussion here in the post-game, which was some of what I was hoping for during the game. I find that interesting, but I recognize that not everybody else does.
Long story short I think a game/player mismatch probably contributed to the issues.
(I hope that didn't come out insulting... it's really not meant to be. Vanilla is a totally different beast than the regular games here, and requires some different skills. Neither one is better or worse).
Not at all
I agree though, vanilla isn't for everyone and the extra wrinkles made it a little harder to get the ball rolling. Ditto for the game/player mismatch. I'd be interested to try it again some day, maybe once the mafia boards are humming along again and we have a healthy stable of players down for something like this.
So that leaves gfish, Jackofhearts, and Skullbrother as potential scum?
What I Learned
1. I probably should have pushed harder on a Skullbro lynch day 2. It would have been hard to accomplish, but if I could get enough suspicion rolling we might have been able to get something done. Then again, if he was actually town, that would have been bad. But he wasn't.
2. Never trust JOH. I really thought he was town.
My thoughts about the play:
Town needed to get a lynch in on most days. This would have been hard, but if town were a little more talkative, something might have gotten done. Not going to repeat what others have said any more than this.
My Thoughts about the game
1. Really cool idea. The problem with trying to balance new formats like this is that it takes a lot of people and several games to get right. But if we could figure out a perfect set up, that would be cool.
2. I think mafia having powers is the unbalanced thing, or at least powers the same as town. If they had to fake it, it would be harder for them to make claims and the like.
3. I think the problem with town mass claiming is that mafia could basically tell who was clear from the actions and work their way in, and mafia could lie easily. Town could also lie, but if a townie was like "I claimed doubler but really I am a misdirector and..." it would look suspicious for a different format game like this. But it might be the best strategy we have, and we should have probably taken that route for at least this game.
And lastly, Thing I should have noticed, but didn't.
JOH rebrought up the night RT thing, but didn't comment on it originally. Therefore, it is likely that it was brought to his attention. Maybe that is what SL was and he was a power cop, or maybe he was maf on a team with a power cop. Or maybe he just noticed it. But it should have made me a little more suspicious.
